Warlock Reveal Circumstances

I want to harp on this because it’s my biggest complaint. It’s why I’m so annoyed, and it’s why I’m directing that annoyance specifically at Aaron. Gatekeeping for his own benefit as a YouTuber/streamer/content creator is absolutely the plan.

According to the Icy Veins Section Manager on Discord:

Aaron came up with the idea of spreading it over a week, creating Warlock Week, due to amount of content he needed to produce.

The written version is what we get provided by Aaron and we release it on the schedule he agreed with EHG and than with us.

Aaron, when given the opportunity to do the Warlock reveal as a thank-you by EHG, came up with a format that derives maximum benefit for himself. It was his idea to spread it out over a week, which obviously is beneficial to him as a small YouTuber. When his reason for that is “the amount of content he has to produce”, and the content he produced is just reading the text on the screen, it’s not really believable that he had good intent.

But the real part to pay attention to is that IcyVeins is only publishing the written copy he gives to them, and he is deliberately providing them with copy that drives you to watch his videos if you want to learn everything (or really even anything). There is no disguising the intent in that.

Making blah videos where he just reads the text on his screen is whatever. Withholding information from text posts so that you have to watch his monetized videos that blast you with plugs for his channel and Patreon is scummy and disrespectful. It doesn’t matter that he did the crocodile tears apology tour and condensed the delivery. The core bullshit remains the same - Driving people to watch videos that are living examples of “This meeting should have been an e-mail” by withholding information from a text format.

Some people defending Aaron keep saying stuff like “Oh why does it even matter, you can’t play the class yet anyway, you can’t wait a few days?”, and they’re all missing the point because that strawman is easier to thumb your nose at. The point is that EHG wanted Aaron to have the Warlock reveal to thank him for the contributions they feel he’s had to their game and its community, and instead of being grateful for that gift and doing right by it, he got dollar signs in his eyes and tried to take advantage of it for personal gain. That’s not the behavior of somebody who ever cared about the community or the game. It’s rotten and crooked and it should be called out. I hope the lesson EHG learns is that Aaron is not to be trusted to do right by them, their game, or their community, and they lock him out in the future from things like this.

This reveal could have been so interesting, if it were handled in the same manner as…let’s say… a LizardIRL build guide. There is so much room for ad lib’d game information, and tie-ins to existing content/features, regarding the new skills, and their skill tree nodes. Instead we get a word-for-word, story time hour of something we could have gotten from just seeing the screenshots themselves.

I once did a Warhammer painting consignment job for a game store near my house, for in-store credit. I waited until the day before it was due to do any work, and turned in barely passable paint jobs, with no real ‘input’ from myself or my skill. This is what this reveal feels like to me.

I’m a bit shocked that I found out about the warlock sneak peek cause of this post I was expecting reading/knowing about it from my steam or youtube feed. I guess I will wait for the official release post but overall feels like a marketing mistake.

Your entire post is dead-on.

His presentation of the passive tree alone almost gave me an aneurysm.
No more Warlock Week for me.

I do have faith that the Maxroll team will do it a lot better.

I am also very disappointed with how Warlock was revealed. Overall, it’s just annoying, and the way it’s being revealed isn’t enjoyable nor is it helpful for me trying to construct ideas on paper for builds.

I went to look for the warlock information on the day it was released. I did not even know it was coming in pieces, but I didn’t really feel much interest reading it since there wasn’t much to see. I just closed the page and thought I’ll check it out myself once its out.

If its supposed to generate hype or something, I don’t think its working. I essentially looked at it for 2-3minutes and decided it was not providing me enough information to care.

If they want to promote content creators, they could do stuff like poe does with its leagues. They describe the league mechanic and the interesting parts about it. After thats done they have had some content creator talk about it.

At any rate, I would say I’m rather patient person and I see no reason to care about this much. Its just that my experience about this all was “ok” and then closed the page. I don’t know if the current style is interesting to some people, but at least to me it was momentary glance only. As I’m writing this, I find I dont even remember anything about it. There was nothing of worth to remember.

Now that I hear it comes in pieces, I won’t even bother to look again until all information is released fully. Its a week? The chances are high that I forget about it by then and never look at it. Hence, I’m expecting to get my information once it actually comes out and I play it myself.

My take on this, is that i just wait for another member of the community to screenshot the relevent tooltips, so i can look through them. The fact that I’m waiting for that, not becuase of an ehg decision, but because a content creator is milking the reveal, is very funny to me. But also ehg might have just milked the reveal had they done it themselves, so eh, whatever. Dudes trying to get a bag, in turn the current le community in general kinda thinks he’s not someone to pay attention to. Backfired probably, what you gonna do.

TBF, they do do a 5 (7?) day reveal in the lead up to the big patches themselves. So Aaron doing isn’t entirely unreasonable.

Assuming that people haven’t forgotten that & are dogpiling him for reasons.

I have all the Falconer info. Watch for my Instagram Stories next week.

What? Dogpiling on a forum? Never.

In all seriousness, I’ll bet if they had known and announced it was going to be a multi-day reveal from the start, this wouldn’t be such a heated topic. I personally was only annoyed a little by that. Then again, I’m a fairly patient person in general. I mean, what is lost here? A few days of character planning. That’s really the most anyone can claim. The quality wasn’t amazing, sure, but that’s not crazy surprising. I’d be lying if I said I gave the tiniest crap about the quality, though. I doubt they’ll leave things quite as “in-the-wind” with an out-of-house content reveal like this again, but I think it’s due to the unannounced nature of the mutli-day reveal, as opposed to what people thought they were getting (all the info in one post).

How would it be “thanking him” if all it did was force him to do extra work with no gain? The entire point is for his channel to gain.

Also, while you claim it is a strawman, the fact is still that it isn’t going to make the next reveal date any closer. What exactly does frontloading the information accomplish? Just seems like a great deal of impatience to me.

Maybe his videos could be done better, but we don’t know what he is still limited to talk about. It could have been great to do a 5-7 days of Warlock, put all the spoilers at the first day, and then each day after that talk about potential builds or whatnot, but again, not sure what he is and isn’t allowed to talk about.

Having the reveal spread out wouldn’t have been so bad, had we known that’s how it was going to happen. Most of us were under the impression it’d be a singular reveal like we had with the factions.

I don’t dislike that it was spread out, I dislike that I didn’t know it was gonna be spread out, it was just a hype killer.

The fact that the video was fairly low quality didn’t help my sadness either, but that’s less the point, more just me finding more to be mildly upset over because I want my information when it was promised.

LOL, what?

Repeating the strawman argument verbatim is not a rebuttal to being accused of strawmanning. Did you actually read the thing you responded to here? Because it feels like you didn’t.

There is no “maybe” about it. A video that consists of nothing more than someone reading words that are also on the screen has no reason to exist. It does not add value to the audience above and beyond a simple sheet of paper. This is Presentations 101 - If there is no difference between watching your presentation and reading a pamphlet, there is no reason for there to be a presentation at all. And again, I question if you actually read what you replied to, because I explicitly said that the bad quality of his videos is not the point.

Still, no discussion about the Warlock mechanics. Such a shame. There is a lot of Drama about EHG’s politics and heavy criticism towards some people. How psychologically thrilled we are to shamble the logical first priority that is, Warlock Reveal.

If we had not access to that information, well I would agree with some reaction. However, we had.

We all have desires, and necessities and visions and we all have the urge to state all of that. But, your life is still the same, you still continue to be you. Opinion gauntlet as far I am concerned, are the basic currency of mediocrity.

At least, we can as the enterprisers of here, be more united. As an organic force, life fluid to this project. All of us are full of fails.

Don’t forget that. We are FULL of failures.

You all are very intelligent and sensitive people, by the way. It is nice to see that.

TBF, that’s what he does here?

While I’m not entirely a fan of his videos, having finally watched it (after accidentally watching the one I linked first), if one is working on the basis that there’s going to be 7 videos going through details, I don’t think the first one just giving a very broad overview is particularly bad. Could he have improved the delivery of the first video? Sure. Was it as bad as people are complaining? IMO, no, as long as you knew that the first one wasn’t going to give all the details (which is what EHG does, they call it “hype week” so I don’t get what the problem is).

Do we all start off as experts? Hell no. IMO, cut the guy some slack & give him some pointers on how he could improve his videos & then watch as he (hopefully) improves & gets better at what he does.

He’s been at it for years, not a newbie.

The way he presented the passive tree is a complete antithesis to the way I want to process information.
I will not give him another click to see if he improves in just a few days, and certainly not going forward.

EHG’s own hype weeks are usually quite informative, and actually make me want to see what comes next. Day 2 of Warlock week was the exact opposite of that. It was more akin to “5 more of these? Screw it, I’m out.”

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the need for marketing, I want to game to be a smash hit.
Their choice of partner in this instance was a poor one, and a hands-off approach towards the content backfired.

Before the 25th, I had no idea who this guy was. This video from over a week ago means very little to me, who really only comes around here to talk to randos on this forum and look for big reveals. I’m almost certain most people are in the boat I am, that if I didn’t know this guy before the official warlock reveal, they had no idea who this guy was.

EHG had put up an official road map saying “Warlock reveal, Jan 25th,” and that’s all the info I thought I needed and was content not looking into it further because their Factions reveal was done very well, and all in one shot.

This video from 10 days ago, with less than 10k views, on a channel with less than 50k subscribers, isn’t going to garner the attention necessary to let the majority of the invested player base know that’s what’s happening.

Okay, you all want to talk about it, fine. See there is a thing called ‘‘Engagement’’. One or two days after the ‘‘Warlock reveal day 1’’, Zizaran make a video entitled ‘‘Why you should play Last Epoch’’, 133k views. So, stop being so damn single minded. God.

Yeah, I think that’s Ziz’s ~3rd one of those (one last year & one ~10 months ago).

If you want me to discuss the actual subject matter, present it to me in a way that doesn’t make me want to scream.
A way that doesn’t turn me off completely by video 2 out of 7.

I haven’t watched a whole lot of Zizaran, but from what I HAVE seen I would say he would have been a far superior choice for the reveal.
