I was (and still am) incredibly hyped for 1.0 and COULD NOT wait for Warlock’s reveal, or any reveal for that matter. That being said, I’m deeply disappointed how Warlock was revealed today on Icyveins.
First of all, I highly dislike the idea of putting very sensitive info into the hands of content creators. I want to stay on top of things, but I don’t want to watch hours on end of streams of a guy who uses his position and micro leaks to draw attention. Toeing the line of hinting at things and actual leaks made me angry, because I felt like I was missing out on juicy details if I stopped watching.
And then today rolled around, and what do we get? A SUPER CHEAPLY made video, badly edited, incredibly badly cut, by a guy who uses the opportunity to plug in a patreon. Really?
I did not expect a big trailer, but man that was a LETDOWN. The revealed content was exciting of course, but in terms of presentation, this (to me) was a complete failure. Even the map chosen to showcase the skills was bad. I’m just really disappointed and wanted to vent somewhere.
It felt like this reveal was made in a way so that Aaron could promote himself more than the actual class, which is just… urgh. No thanks.
I’ve also been hyped for Warlock, and I’m also really annoyed at the delivery and quality of the reveal. Splitting it up over the next seven days is a horse shit experience, especially when Day 1 was about 5 minutes worth of content and information about the class.
Among the other numerous complaints about the poor quality of the video, I’m also really irritated by AaronRPG using the “deliberately speak slowly” bullshit to drag out the length of an otherwise very short video. I had to throw it on 1.5x speed before it sounded like he was speaking at a normal human cadence. But I don’t even know why there was a video in the first place when there was so little content to it.
This should have all been put into one day and given to somebody like Zizaran instead.
I don’t know how much involvement was on Icy Veins side themselves and how much on Aaron’s side.
I don’t particularly care for any Content Creator, because I personally don’t watch any of them anyway.
But I think the main point of giving it out to a site like Icy Veins was to get an entire new audience for exposure, which is totally fair. But this could still ahve been done in a way better, user freindly experience, while still achieving those marketing goals.
Sure, Icy Veins is a big site that has lots of adjacent content to LE and that’s a good thing for their exposure and marketing. But let’s be honest for a minute - who even is AaronRPG? Why did he get to be The Guy for this? The only reason I even know he exists is because A) He has a unique with his name on it in the game and B) His name is plastered all over the Warlock reveal. He’s itty bitty potatoes and it shows in the lack of polish and quality in his video today, as well as the ridiculous amount of self plugging he used it as a platform for. Being small or supporting smaller content creators isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it absolutely is when it results in this, which can only be described as bush league.
I’m sure that there are any number of content creators it would have been better to give it to, I only name Zizaran specifically because him being such a strong advocate for LE for such a long time is why I found it in the first place. The point is, somebody bigger and more professional and experienced would have handled it with better care and respect for the community.
Why give it to them in the first place? All the other reveals have been done via LE dev posts… until this. Just chalk it up to yet another questionable outlet choice…
I dont really care who gets the chance to reveal for EHG, but just like to leave the feedback of, 7 parts reveal is way to long and does the opposite of create hype for a player like me. I dont want to have to piece all this random information from spliced videos together. I want a nice full length video or article explaining warlock.
I pray whatever falconer reveal they have is going to be done in a singular go on maxroll…
I don’t fully agree with that. WoWHead, MMOChampion, etc just reposts links to official content, and they do just fine. I don’t think any additional visibility was gained by a site having an exclusive look at Warlock, and putting it on their LE sub-site. You’d have to be looking for LE content, in the first place, to see it.
Also, as was mentioned above, there’s no place for discussion. With all the other ‘reveals’ that we’ve had… here… there’s been an open forum for discussion about it. The devs included. I’m not going to go create an Icy-Veins account, just to have a discussion with 5 other people, none of which are one of the devs.
This is very interesting to watch develop in real time. EHG’s intent is to thank content creators for drawing attention to LE, but there’s been a mixed community reaction to how those creators are handling the content. We’re seeing the growing pains of a company try to figure out how to accomplish its goals, and I’m wondering how the lessons of this week will influence them over the coming years.
Well, the community has kind of felt, in the past, that official channels should take the priority. There would be nothing stopping LE from announcing Warlock, in their usual way, via a Dev forum post… with screenshots, highlights, etc. But then also allowing content creators to get a feel for the new content themselves – via a private viewing/release – that they could then create content about their own experience playing with the new Mastery. But having a content creator’s opinion also double as the official content announcement is a poor way of doing so, imho.
Edit: Also, where was the big announcement about this reveal? Other than the blurb at the end of the Trade Faction reveal post, where’s the hype for Warlock and Falconer? Outside of this thread, I would have totally missed it.
Well, very good arguments here. Indeed there is a lot of ups and downs. But when we became so selfish? To adress that, we have to list and do some self-criticism:
1 - AaronActionRPG endevour: Well, we don’t know the network behind the scenes of LE propaganda agenda. Plus, he is a content creator that is growing and to be fair, wasn’t that bad. Was… okay. But if you gonna compare to those Golias of ARPG content… well it will just ramp your delusion and propagate angry towards the game that you claim to love or be envolved with. Even though the ‘collective mind’ forces some tendency (positive, negative or neutral), to be fair if people were cooler the tolerance versus game experience would be softer. Just a bit of silence and space to see things working.
2 - Do you even discuss about warlock and game engineering as a good/bad new content? If you wash your eyes from the pestilances of midia, do you see the new game addition? This should be the first topic of discussion and I am not seeing it. Be passionate more than obnoxious.
3 - Don’t be so greedy with your expectations, be polished. The toxicity borns from that gap.
There is no exposure to a new audience, icy-veins users will still see the post, regardless of it’s exclusiveness. If it was about exposure, there would have been posts everywhere (here, on discord, youtube, steam), and a high quality video footage and other media for every content creator to use. It’s the other way around, LE audience forced to visit a website (containing short build guides without a planner link or video showcase) and watch a patreon ad.
