Your Cosmetic Feedback Could Shape What’s Next in Last Epoch

They already added that dude

You can do that now.

Which items do you feel offer the best value or appeal, and why?

For me, the best value always is, and always will be, skill effects. I love having options to change the theming of a skill. I remember in the past a comment on a dev stream or interview about certain skills not recieving certain themes (IE; void primalist skill effects) and I dont quite understand why. In a game with as much complexity as Last Epoch you can do almost any kind of damage with any kind of skill, whether or not it is supported by that tree. Don’t limit yourselves by what is possible on the surface level and give more skills alternate effects that are flashy and that change how the skill looks completely.

One of my favorite examples of good skill fx work is in POE the smite skill effects. There is default smite, which is a yellow beam, and then there is a beautiful skill effect MTX that turns it into blue falling swords cloaked in lightning. It looks beautiful, and currently I dont feel as though there is anything in Last Epoch that fills that same role of reimagining what a skill is while still staying in theme, besides maybe the bee meteor and the MTX for maelstrom.

More variety for skills, more skill effects need to be flashier, and honestly they need to look “better” or more appealing than the base skill. And there needs to be FX for every skill in the game. Both Cycle 2 and 3 I have played a lot, and really really wanted to support EHG, but there were not skill fx for the skills I was playing and so i felt no urge to purchase anything. There were a few armor sets that I found cool, but I felt like none of these sets would fit the theme of the character and skill I was playing. In POE, if I am playing a blood wielding witch character there is like 20+ different cosmetic sets for it + ground effects, character effects, and skill effects. I have options in both price range and aesthetics but they all would suit what I am looking for. There’s not enough of that in LE.

Another topic is ground effects, and additional effects like floating. In POE a LOT of players use MTX that make your character float. It Fits a lot of thematics and can make the game feel smoother to play. I think looking into adding a new MTX that make characters float could honestly be huge.

Are there specific themes, styles, or item types you’d like to see more of? Less of?

Everything. More of everything. More void, more fire, more corpse, more ice, more generics knights, generic thieves, generic mages, super extravagent knights, etc. I think a lot of the MTX in LE look great, honestly. BUT, not many of them fit enough generic thematics. Theres not enough generic knight sets, theres not enough crazy extravagent knight sets. A lot of the current MTX seem to be trying to be original and fit really specific niches, but thats just not what they need to do. Look at POE, there are HUNDREDS of sets of just generic knights but themed differently, and it works. On this topic, introduce different palletes for each set. In POE there are sets that I like and dont like, despite them being the same models, just because the textures/color palletes are different. Add in multiple versions of the same MTX just with different color palletes. Could go a long way.

Are there any items you’ve avoided purchasing, and what influenced that decision?

I mentioned this before but, I have yet to buy any skill MTX simply because in both cycles I have yet to play a build that used a skill that had any MTX. I would LOVE to have alternative skill FX but I just, don’t have the option. i want the option. LET ME give you money. Theres just currently not enough variety and options to let me give EHG money. Same thing goes for armour and back attachments. I will say the roll FX look great, and I am always tempted to buy one of those. What the roll FX do succesfully compared to the skill FX and other MTX is simply just volume and variety. There are a lot of different options for roll FX and they all are themed differently, but also generically enough that many of them could fit into most builds. The game needs more MTX like that.

  1. Skill effects are by the most valuable MTX. I use skills the most, I see skills the most. Often times my character is obscured by my spell effects even without mtx. Skill effects can even make a build feel better to play or more appealing.

  2. Thematically I don’t think anything stands out as more or less appealing, as long as they are high quality I’m happy, but visual clarity is king. It’s also important for subskills to inherit MTX effects for consistency. I also want to see more weapon effects to match armor skills, and effects that apply across weapon types rather than being locked to a specific type. And of course, transmog/skin transfer. A lot of the time I like a simple look of my character and a lot of the base designs of armor types are quite nice and I would surely use them if we had transmog. Lastly I think a lot of the current MTX looks a little awkward, a lot of weird shoulder designs that ruin what could be a sleek /clean look.

  3. Portals are a miss for me. In POE i see portals all the time, 6 on map opening, and every time i go in or out, but in LE I hardly ever see my portal which diminishes the value greatly. Portals are already better than they used to be, but id still never purchase a portal individually.

Skill effects are my favorite but only if it matches the theme of the build I’m going for. I will not buy mtx that turns beastmaster companions to look like necromancer ones but I will probably buy a ton of prehistoric/primal/wild looking animal/dinosaur skins. I will probably never buy something thats turns my ice spell to look like blood as another example. My suggestion would be about how Glacier Ice effect and Elemental Nova Ice effect look miss matched. You could make it so they both have an mtx that looks like the other for those that both want the realistic ice vs the cartoony one. You can make water mtx for cold spells too.
Once there is a theme of spell mtx I like, then and only then I will consider buying the approriate clothes/pets/portals. But this also means if the orginal spell animastion is good, I will buy around that theme as well. So an acolyte that mimics in looks to wandering spirits or a cape/sythe to match it’s reaper form will be a must buy for me. Similarly a mage with tomes, and ambient spell effects circling, one that fits any of its spell schools or any type of tribalistic Primalist gear will be my first options to buy.

The problem with you trying to make the monetization of cosmetics in Last Epoch the primary source of revenue is that you’ve built a foundation that is fundamentally at odds with selling aesthetics.

There is no character customization in this game at all. Not even the most basic customization choice of all, the ability to choose the gender of a character.

You are trying to sell me paint to put on a brutalist concrete box. If you want me to buy flowers for the flowerbeds, you need to let me make it my house first.

You are not attracting an audience that cares about this kind of stuff. The fact that I’ve even had the audacity to bring up the character gender conversation in this post is probably going to result in a bunch of people outright attacking me, as it always does. If you want people to buy shit to make their character pretty, you need to start by attracting an audience that wants what you’re selling, not one that is hostile to the very idea of it.

Personally I havent baught any of the cosmetics because i think they are all very over designed and do not suite my personal aesthetic at all. Im probably an outlier but a simpler cleaner outfits would go a long way for me.

Or more joke skins and effects. BEE-teor is an adorable idea.

Also, while it probably would be very off brand, I think a goth-lolita magical girl skin for the Reaper Form skill would be HILARIOUS. But yeah very off brand.

One pet peeve about skill type change is that I wish for the option to chance icon color to match the skill type. It’s already jarring when I press a red meteor icon for a lightning one, if the same type of transformation occurs with a paid skill mtx I would expect at least that to change my icon or give me the option to. I mean it’s not a necessity but would be nice.

as a player that so far has only purchased packs for the purpose of supporting and not because I particularly liked what was offered:

1: obviously skill effects have the most appeal, but most of those offered are simply a hue change, perhaps buying a single hue selector for all skill effects, and then the team implementing more cool looking and advanced skill effects would have more impact.
packs, their prices and what they’re offer are already a perfect deal in my opinion, but the cosmetics are still the issue overall.

2: I would like to see less of a focus on “set” items of cosmetics meant to only look good when all together, instead, I would like cosmetics to be less themed or color themed so players can equip cosmetics from different packs without them looking so… off between them, obviously it doesn’t help that the store is new, and there’s not a lot of choice to transmog our characters yet.

3: I’ve always avoided and don’t equip/buy any back/wing item apart from cloaks or backpacks, I think none of the wing items are scaled or applied to the characters in a good way, they look bulky, too big, and maybe a little unattached to the characters. Only exception being the weaver pack with really cool wings that unfortunately, only look to fit a complete set.

I don’t offer solutions as I wouldn’t know any better, just my experience as a customer and long time arpg player.

The first and last time i bought cosmetics in LE was at the start of season 3, after seeing that all the cosmetics got removed each time i logged into the game i stopped using them and will never buy any again. Reinstalled the game and deleted all the leftovers files and nothing.

Which items do you feel offer the best value or appeal, and why?

For me personally the highest value is found in MTXs for the characters themselves.
Being able to change gender in particular, would open up so much more gameplay for me, because i tend to only play female characters.
Second after that is a nice selection of helmet MTXs (or actually lack of helmet), more crowns, tiaras, circlets, even hairstyles as a replacement for “real helmets”.

Are there specific themes, styles, or item types you’d like to see more of? Less of?

I like the more dark themes, not the flashy over the top things.
I way prefer, for example, a dark, clean, robe with some red or silver highlights, over huge shoulderpads + big chunky armour that sparkle with beams of light.
(also don´t be afraid, to make characters look more attractive with MTXs)

Are there any items you’ve avoided purchasing, and what influenced that decision?

I personally don´t care for pets.

I think skill effects are the best value, and of those, the ones that most drastically change the skill’s appearance. I typical create new builds based on the skills I want to use and how they can look and function, so something like the cherry blossoms effect for Smoke Bomb encouraged me to create a ‘samurai’ build. Although, this was also because I wanted to make a ‘samurai’ build before I saw the skill effect (due to basically wanting to recreate classes from another game I play). Thus, a large variety of skill effects would be good.

Honestly, there’s a lot. I want more ‘fantasy’ stuff (elves, dragons, fairy type things). I want some more ‘tech’-based stuff (turrets, explosive effects, lasers). More animals/forms for the primalist (snake forms, bull/minotaur, elephant, and so on).

I’d also love to see more pretty/elegant stuff like dresses for my acolytes and rogues (female versions of the other classes when?).

And voice-over packs would be really cool too, though I guess those might be wishful thinking.

Pets, evade effects, portals, and weapons/armor.

Pets because they sort of feel superfluous, like, if I want something following me around I’m probably playing a minion build, right? So they’re pretty much only for builds where I’m playing a character that doesn’t have a combat minion for gameplay reasons, but thematically has one, like a ranger with a scouting owl or something. Pets should basically be able to replace minion skins if you want them to, so like that one owl pet could be just a pet, or you could use it as the Falcon instead. Also, we should have like a pet-battling mode (you know you want it too).

Evade effects I haven’t bought because I never use evade. Like, I use things that change evade into other things (Crab Ring, Swiftness gloves) more than I use evade. And it just never feels good to use otherwise. Really, it would be better if evade mtx were also movement skill effects, or came with equivalent versions, because some of the evade mtx do look pretty nice.

Portals I just don’t feel like I use them enough to want different visuals for them.

Weapons/gear I haven’t bought any because I’m changing my gear often, and gear mtx feels like a ‘finishing touches’ on a build/character. They’re also just not generalized enough, I think. Weapons need to be more of a set/theme or not be tied to item type beyond 1h vs 2h; for example, I don’t use maces on any builds due to thematics, but if I could use say, a sword skin, on a mace, then I might be more inclined to buy it (and vice versa).

Sorry, my reply was kind of rambly, but there’s so much that could be added or improved it’s hard to address it all.

  • Which items do you feel offer the best value or appeal, and why?
  • the support packs, specifically that the fact the larger ones also include the smaller ones.
  • Are there specific themes, styles, or item types you’d like to see more of? Less of?
  • I enjoy matching specific builds - i.e. if Im running a lightening focused build, I enjoy matching that theme. Otherwise, I enjoy the ability to match the szn theme as we start getting into more of that, the prehistoric set was cool given this seasons theme. More ability MTX would be something I’d enjoy as well.
  • Are there any items you’ve avoided purchasing, and what influenced that decision?
  • Nope, I’ve bought all the support packs and a handful of individual things just based on preference. I enjoy the skins and supporting the game

I agree with some others that i’ve seen post. the cosmetics look good, but having a themed set gets ruined if you dont have the full theme. I’m personally a fan of dragons and things of a draconic nature so i’d love to see more draconic themed cosmetics. that includes finishing some of the sets that are missing matching pieces like weapons, or skill transmogs… (would love to make my fire mage look like a dragon mage) as well more mage style cosmetics (flowing robes, a hood or other type of mystic helmet ornament stuff) i did avoid some of the void things because it just didnt appeal to me, but having theme bundles, both full armor sets and full weapon sets, is nice and i’d love to see those more

I like to have a complete set of cosmetics, such as being everything on fire/frozen in armor and then changing the weapons with a different theme. With the back piece, I do like big cool things such as dragon wings, but i imagine in these themes could enter some funny stuff too to have a different “flavor” to call it something.

Something it would be interesting is if you could get the community to create their own cosmetics. I’ve seen in other games like Warframe where they have an entire section of community’s cosmetics, where as i understand it, they give a part of what they charge from the cosmetic to the creator.

I love that you are asking this question.

As someone who really likes your game and wants to support it, I have purchased A lot of the cosmetics you offer. I would imagine I’m probably pretty above average on MTX spending.

With that in mind, I personally find that the styles of your MTX are pretty terrible. I don’t use a lot of them.

  1. A lot of the cosmetics don’t actually look very good. They are way to shiny and glowey.
  2. Some of the MTX clip wierd with each other.
  3. Some of the colours are way to bright.
  4. You need to put out MTX for every weapon type ASAP.
  5. Zoomed out most of them loose sharpness.

Don’t care too much about cosmetics but in POE2 I bought a few stat trackers. They don’t tell you anything groundbreaking but it’s fun to see how many Xs you’ve picked up or Ys you’ve killed.

I also bought some execution cosmetics which play when you kill a rare enemy.

In general I’d recommend raiding other ARPGs for ideas. Other freemium games I know of have a heavy character focus but LE doesn’t really have that to lean on. I guess you could buy skins for the NPCs you most frequently interact with, but in the endgame they aren’t major characters.

Definitely abilities transmog

In other games, I enjoy having weapon effects that has after kill effect – having eye candy every kill when grinding for hours makes game play more enjoyable.

I’m not very keen on cosmetics in general, as a preamble.

Which items do you feel offer the best value or appeal, and why?

Cosmetic effect sets for a class’ skills. If I am buying cosmetics, it will be skill effects, because those I actually notice while playing the game.

Are there specific themes, styles, or item types you’d like to see more of? Less of?

If we talk about character appearance, then a few fancy but grounded themes.

Are there any items you’ve avoided purchasing, and what influenced that decision?

Pets.
