WASD Movement - I / We want it

In the recent Interview it was said to make some noise in the forum for WASD movement, so here I am. Would love the option, as i think its both more relaxed as well as more fun.

Naturally, make it optional

I couldnā€™t agree with this more. It has been requested at least a few times, probably more. Iā€™m hoping the devs have plans to make it happen.

Hereā€™s an additional developer response concerning this topic from the most recent stream on June 30, 2023:

So when, or if, it does come to the game it wonā€™t be until sometime after 1.0.

Who is we?

There have been more than one person asking for it, so ā€˜weā€™ is appropriate. I also would like it as an option and donā€™t see it as an issue as long as it doesnā€™t remove the current way as an option.

It can easiely be an issue if it isnā€™t implemented in a way where it isnā€™t adding unwanted stuff. Stutterstepping alone would make it superrior to mouse not to start if they implement it like it was a twinstickshooter and you can move in one direction and cast to your mousecourser.

There is a ton of stuff that needs to be kept in mind to make WASD not the superior input method and youā€™ll never achive balance. If you remove all the things that could make WASD OP you dump the input method down so much itā€™s useless to even make use of it because you gimp yourself.

If WASD is an afterthought in a game it always turned out to be an exploitable mess.

Yeah but I want to know who we is ^^. I talked about the people from my Multigaming clan and the LE section that ceased to exist because people left it. I want to know who we is because he might speak for 237897 people or for his made up imaginary friends. Depending on whatā€™s the case there could be something in here that will spark my intrest because 237897 people might come up with something intrestingā€¦ imaginary friends on the other hand not so muchā€¦ just to overexxagerate two extremes so people get my point.

In the last few years people cry developers a river for WASD movement and untill today I wait for a valid reason why this should be a thing in the hack and Slash genre when there are twinstickshooters out there that should scratch their WASD itch.

Right now I play The Slormancer for example where WASD is realy nicely implemented. Then again it plays like a twinstickshooter rather then a hack and slash game. I tried mouse movement in that game but itā€™s subpar because you need to make use of your skilrange so mobs with windup animations donā€™t hit you.
Imagine the same in LE it would be a clownfiesta  .

Because itā€™s more comfortable?

What you consider a valid reason is irrelevant.

The idea that it can be exploited can equally be said for click movement (click is more precise for example).

The game was made with this precission in mind so this argument is pretty much wasted. Thatā€™s why i say WASD as an afterthought is bad because younā€™t balnce the input methods later on in a good way without changing a lot of stuff.

Sadly itā€™ not simply ā€œthrow the controler input on it and itā€™ll work!ā€. Then again to me itā€™s realy important if I get valid input here because I already wasted my time with this thread because there is nothing new or insightfull outside of ā€œI want X!ā€ what is valid by itself but no reason to open up a new post if the old ones arenā€™t closed. (what they most likely are)

Weird people.

Whatā€™s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Just because you think a thing is relevant doesnā€™t invaludate his view that itā€™s irrelevant (& vice versa).

Mike kinda said it was. It just takes time to do that.

He can think his view is relevant, but it isnā€™t. You canā€™t define what is a valid reason for someone else. Their reason is valid to them. Maybe if he were the one in control of the game design and the parameters of change requests, then he could define what constitutes a valid reason for a change.

As long as you accept that your view is just as irrelevant as his (or anyone elseā€™s).

Nothing. Matters.

I mean this isnt really a thing that matters.

The aim assist on controllers is so fucking borked in games like apex/fn and tons of other more competitive games then an ARPG, if you can enjoy the controller in your hands its a straight buff.

And everyone calls it out, it simply isnt worth trying to ā€œbalanceā€ the two inputs, because if they make life harder for the console players they simply wont play.

So I see now reason not to have WASD as it will just attract more players who cares if its 10% better then click to move.

Was that the good oleā€™ my opinion is objective fact while yours is subjective garbage?

Controler is fine but what most people wanted in the past when they said ā€œMe want WASD!ā€ was moving with WASD and facing and casting where the mousecourser is aka a twinstickshooter.

Then again I talked with a pal who is considered disabled because of his problems with arms and hands and I trust that guy. He says ergonomic formed mouse > keyboard input.

The thing is most people open up a ā€œME want WASD!ā€ thread and are never again heared of while people discuss the topic for them in a never ending treadmill.

So to make thingsshort: Iā€™m okay witth WASD when it is implemented in a way so it isnā€™t the superior input methoded and not exploitable.

As far as I understand it it is just a reaction to another user whoā€™s post appears to convey a strong sense of the user behind it considering themselves having the interpretational sovereignty in some regard. Or it was just misinterpreted as such. And that same post brought up the ā€œvalid reasonā€ thing. I stopped reading at that point.

To not further derail this topic, hereā€™s my take:
Iā€™d love to see this feature implemented, especially since it is already available when playing with a controller. Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d regularly use it over the current mouse movement but itā€™s a nice optional feature to have and I know quite a few people we prefer WASD over mouse movement.
But I also feel like there are more pressing matters right now and that kind of stuff should wait until 1.0 at the earliest. Mike already confirmed that approach, so Iā€™m happy.

Appreciate it, I did not read all the posts leading up to it. I have no strong opinion on the matter, but like every other game, more accessibility options, the better. WASD giving an ā€œadvantedgeā€ is a non issue imo, this isnt Valorant. Sure we have leaderboards, but whoever is on top for the online leaderboards is there because they are good, not because their input method.

This isā€¦ 100x more thought and concern than what this subject deserves. Iā€™m fairly certain nobody cares about whatever microscopic ā€œadvantagesā€ this movement might provide, and accessibility features are never a bad thing.
