Upgraded to Nvidia 5080 and Ryzen 9, still get 30-40fps in monoliths

TLDR: DLSS/FSR when?

Details… I just upgraded my PC from a Ryzen 5, 2060 RTX and 1080p monitors, was getting low 35fps in monoliths. I have performed a Dune Awakening benchmark test with my new setup and it’s looking good.

Screenshot of test found HERE.

Now when I run Last Epoch using no DLSS and the Unity Engine in 269 corruption Monoliths on my new setup with everything either set to low or off (same settings from my PC setup, besides 1440p instead of 1080p), terrain texture detail set to Medium and I STILL get fps drops to 35-40 when fighting a pack of mobs on my screen.

I sunk over £2.5k into my PC upgrades and I get zero performance increase in this game. I caution anyone else reading this to try doing the same, in the hopes your fps in this game will improve… it won’t.

Edit:
Test PC PassMark Rating (PerformanceTest 11.1):
10015.8 86th Perecentile, screenshot of result HERE.

Last Epoch general gameplay video on high settings, 1440p, which does not utilise DLSS or FSR in Unity Engine.

Dune Awakening game character creator & benchmark mode, on ultra settings, 1440p, which utilises DLSS/FSR3 in Unreal Engine 5:

Test your ssf drive, it might be the reason of poor performance.

Done, looks good, benchmark results HERE.

Should I try downloading more RAM?

If disk is ok, surely next patch will fix the issues for you :vulcan_salute:

Thanks, you got me thinking some more and I realised the 69fps limit messed up my Passmark score. I removed the limit and also changed the DPI to 100%. Passmark score found HERE.

My room is a little warmer now and I know I have everything set to allow for the Last Epoch game to run the best it can on my local PC. I will test out performance in-game now.

OK with Graphics Master Quality Set to High now, with 1440p resolution, in Bordless Window mode:

  1. I get 150~160fps in the monolith of fate reign of dragons echo select area.

  2. Selected Barren Slums 269 corruption echo…

  3. I get 136~147fps standing still at the echo entry point.

  4. I get 54~72fps with a full 2 packs of mobs, killing a boss/spire and shaman tornado default spell effects on my screen.

  5. Standing still again inside the echo with no mobs, or spells cast, I now get 124~129fps.

  6. Moved onto the next spire and 2 packs of mobs…

  7. I now get 44~68fps with a full 2 packs of mobs, killing a 2nd boss/spire and shaman tornado default spell effects on my screen.

  8. Standing still again inside the echo with no mobs, or spells cast, I now get 124~133fps.

  9. Moving onto the next pack of mobs, a 3rd boss and spire…

  10. I now get 48~63fps with one pack of mobs, killing a 3rd boss/spire and shaman tornado default spell effects on my screen.

  11. Standing still with the echo now complete…

  12. I get 102fps to 107fps.

  13. Used my portal to the echo of a world area…

  14. Now I get 202~217fps.

Seems like mob density and spell effects is the issue here, I remember reading somewhere Unity assets in a scene all need to be processed by the Unity Engine and that the use of this engine for an APRG game with high mob density and spell effects is not going to get fixed soon. I read that back in 2022 and here I am now throwing money at a gaming rig that simply cannot fix the root cause problem (Unity Engine).

Not sure what they are doing to improve performance in 2025, I was experiencing this back in 2021 when the game was in beta and it seems to have improved a slight bit but not using all the tools available like DLSS, I fail to see how I can or should do anything more my end, just spent £2.5k on upgrades for a slight fps improvment on High settings at 1440p, besides maybe upgrading my RAM and SSD for a slightly higher passmark score. :man_shrugging:

I just bought a new PC and am getting similar issues. Can you check your VRAM usage? I am tracking a few threads with related issues and it would be good to get your feedback.

Its too bad because Last Epoch is my favorite ARPG right and also the one I’m getting most performance issues on. Even in poe2, a much heavier game doesn’t drop frames as much as LE.

I haven’t found a single possible solution for these issues. I sent a support ticket to EHG regarding it with my specs and a few screenshots of the game with afterburner monitoring on.

DiJi was kind enough and replied to me this:

"Hi,

I will forward this information to our team regarding performance issues in Monoliths. Currently, from what I can see, you’ve done many of the recommended workarounds and I would have no further instructions.

Does the performance lower when there is a large mob or is it fully random when it drops?

Kindly,
DiJi"

I can say they are aware of these issues, but I have no idea when or if they will be able to fix them. If the problem is Unity itself, then its gonna be a long time until its fixed.

I have recorded 10minutes of general Last Epoch game play (killed a monolith boss/harbinger and ran a 269 corruption monolith echo), gameplay video found HERE.

Note:
The Nvidia overlay wasn’t recorded in this video, but you can clearly see the game performance lower to 40~50fps in monolith part of the video.
Check the YouTube video description for my PC system details and Passmark results, mentioned briefly in my previous posts on this forum thread.

I am uploading a 1440p YouTube Video, recorded in OBS of more general gameplay, showing Nvidia Basic overlay. Will be ready in a couple of hours, because the mp4 file is huge lol.

Yes, I agree and I think Last Epoch game engine is the reason for the poor performance.

I have now uploaded a video of me trying to do end game monoliths, the FPS is really poor for my rig. CPU/GPU % utilisation is usually <50% and fps is low too. It’s really difficult to play at a high level when the engine keeps dropping frames like this.

Video of general monolith gameplay found HERE.

Note: I noticed logging in, the GPU utilisation is up at 90% in the menu for some reason, so would recommend not staying in the login or character select screen for long.

I have added benchmark videos to my original post, including a new Dune benchmark video. I have spent more time doing this than actually playing Last Epoch today! I might actually hit 100 by the end of the weekend. Hopefully this helps the devs a bit, I hope we get more improvements to performance, like DLSS and FSR, having the game engine force rendering of every frame at a certain resolution is tough on our poor gaming rigs!
