Flex features are those that EHG hopes to include with 1.0, but will only be added if time permits. While I hope most of these will be included I can’t say for certain, and there have been various dev responses that bring into question whether or not certain features will be ready in time for launch.
As we draw closer to release I imagine the likelihood of each of these flex features making it into 1.0 will become more clear. It should also be noted that some of these items may not even be considered flex features by EHG, but rather fall within the “polish” bucket.
Roadmap Discussions
These are all the most recent discussions concerning features they’re working on for launch.

Q: What’s a big topic you guys are thinking on or working on besides multiplayer?
Mike: I mean, the cop-out answer here is performance. That’s definitely the next biggest thing. There’s performance, there’s multiplayer, there’s the missing classes. Apart from just more of everything else that we have in the game already there’s not much else that going to go in. No, I shouldn’t say that. Those are the big things that we’re ready to share about.

Q: What system do you think will hopefully carry the 1.0 launch? Maybe monolith or arena or multiplayer or something else? Totally okay to skip this question if it’s weird.
Mike: No, I understand what you’re talking about and…um…uh, I do kind of want to skip it. I’d love to answer it though. We kind of just want everything to be a little bit better, everything to be a little bit more polished, everything to be a little bit more complete, and I think that’s what’s going to going to be the big push on 1.0. It will be a push to bring a lot of new people into the game. Maybe there’s new dungeons, new monoliths, things like that, new features in the monolith, new features in dungeons, things like that – just getting those experiences to be better.
I think having, and this could change as we’re still a ways out, but I think having fewer major endgame systems at launch – like I don’t think it would be smart for us to do an entire monolith level endgame system for launch. It’d be like if PoE tried to make a second mappings level system at their 1.0 launch, or something like that. I don’t think – I know it’s different then and now, but I don’t think that including another system that’s this expansive and this big would be wise at launch. Maybe something that tied into this, maybe tied other systems together.
Improving the experience of these systems, that would be good to have. Keeping those gameplay systems that are available really strong, really tight, and really interesting. There are a few things missing, and they are things that people have talked about a lot in critiques of Last Epoch and things like that, which they’re not wrong, and we need to get right before we move on to more things. Not move on, but before we start adding major endgame systems we need to make sure the ones we have are really awesome. I think they’re really good right now, I don’t think they’re really awesome yet. So I really want to get to the point where I can confidently say that, ‘Okay monolith is really awesome. It’s fun to play, it’s engaging, it’s got depth and complexity, it’s all those sorts of things.’

Q: When roadmap to 1.0?
Mike: Roadmaps are tricky. I don’t know if we’re going to do or when we’ll do another roadmap. It’s one of those things where we might find – the number of features that are left to do for 1.0 is not a huge amount of stuff and it mostly hinges on feedback from 0.9. We have a lot of things that we have listed that we’re like, ‘Hey we need to do A, B, and C to get from 0.9 to one 1.0.’ We know we have to do these things and those are things we know we have to do. The 3 Mastery classes, for example.
However, it’s possible that after 0.9 releases, because we’ve opened it up to such a wide population compared to what it is now, some new problems might show up and we’re like okay we need an extra patch to get through this, or we need more time to sort out these issues. There’s things that could crop up so I don’t want to say specifically what it is. It’s hard to put a timeline on those things, especially now, because we might find out that we need more time to get to it. We’re in ticking things off the list mode. [Mike laughs]

Mike: Our major focus right now with the game is stability – making sure things like accidental rollbacks don’t happen – decreasing load times, improving server performance. Those are the number one priority. Then the number two priority for us is finishing the classes off so that all their skills are finished, adding the final mastery classes, polishing up the endgame, deepening the endgame experience, adding the Item Factions system. These are the high priority things for us right now. So yeah, we’re working on it and then also simultaneously with all that just bug fixes and polish updates – and that’s always happening.

Q: Is there an updated development roadmap?
Mike: No, I can give you one right now; missing masteries, polish. There’s our road map, that’s it. [Mike laughs] There’s going to be other stuff too, but if we were going to make a roadmap that’s probably all we’d put on it right now. We have a lot of features that we’re like okay we want to get this in for this patch, we want to get this in for 1.0, but a lot of it’s just like okay this is cuttable if it comes down to it. A lot of it’s just like little things, okay we’ll get it in but… [Mike trails off and doesn’t finish the thought]

Q: Any roadmap for the pipeline to reveal?
Mike: We’re going for 1.0, we’re pushing. There’s a lot of new masteries to go, there’s lots of skills to put in, there’s work on early campaign stuff that we’re putting in. There’s a lot of flex features, a lot of flex features.

April 7, 2023
Q: Where can I check the roadmap?
Mike: We don’t have a roadmap active right. There’s not a lot of major features on the roadmap between now and 1.0. Between now and 1.0 is Item Factions, Masteries, finish the skills, improvements to endgame systems, bugs, and then there’s like 40 other non-headlining features that are actively being worked on and as soon as they’re finished – like as soon as someone finishes on one it just goes in the next patch. So they’re hard to put on a roadmap because a lot of them are just like if they make it in before 1.0 they’re in and if they don’t then they’ll be in 1.1, you know.

Q: I’m constantly seeing people, especially on Reddit, suggesting things you’ve already said you have planned or will not do. I’d like to see an updated roadmap or something that we can point people towards.
Mike: Yeah, it’s hard because there’s – with the things we’ve said we won’t do, we’re not going to put things we said we won’t do on a roadmap…like, ‘We’re not going to do these four things’ type thing. That’s not the sort of stuff we’re looking to put on a roadmap really, if we were to do it.
I do think a roadmap is a really good tool. I do agree the roadmap is a really good tool for it, especially for new players or even returning players…just people who aren’t sitting and reading everything every day, that sort of stuff. Like a one-stop shop infographic where they can get the up-to-date information on what’s relevant for them, and looking at it that way it is a really useful tool.

Q: Do You guys and girls have any roadmap for 1.0 version? What we can expect?
Mike: We don’t have a public roadmap because other than a few very key features (Item Factions, Warlock, Runemaster, and Falconer) not much is for sure going to hit our 1.0 internal deadline. It’s getting a little easier to tell now that we are at most 7 months out though. We’ve got several other features that we are planning for and striving for but just aren’t ready to commit to for 1.0. A roadmap would look kind of weird as it would be basically those 4 things above with a ton of “flex features” listed.

Q: Are you guys mostly just focusing on polish and the unfinished classes right now or is new content also in the works for 1.0?
Mike: One of the primary content pieces for 1.0 are the missing mastery classes. That’s one of the main content pieces that’s missing. There is other content stuff, like more traditional content stuff. I don’t know how to describe it properly but maybe things that you might consider more similar to a traditional league mechanic, I guess. [The stream loses sound]
I guess I was probably talking about the path to 1.0 and what we’re doing there. A lot of it is polish. There is still some gameplay stuff to be added.

Q: Will 1.0 have any new features that will shock players that they weren’t expecting?
Mike: Um…I hope so, I hope so. I think they’re – like some people won’t be shocked and that sort of thing, but I’m sure some people will be. There’s things that we’ve, I want to say, theoretically referenced and suggested would be good to have that we don’t know if we’re going to be able to get in on time or not that if we do it’ll be a little surprising because we haven’t specifically announced that we’re doing that sort of thing. If that makes any sense. Sometimes there’s features that we keep quiet about until we know they’re going in. That’s happened a few times.

June 16, 2023
Q: I assume you guys do not have a date for 1.0, but is there a roadmap to 1.0? Like all the features that are planned before full launch.
Mike: Not really. We do have a date planned for 1.0. We have an internal goal for 1.0, and we have a list of features that are sort of our internal must-haves and then we’ve got another huge list of features that are our hopes we have for it. [Mike laughs] We can’t really put those “hope we have” features on a roadmap because there’s a lot of them. There’s a lot more than we think will be possible to get in for 1.0. Almost no matter what that list is going to have things missing off of it from the 1.0 launch.
So the things that we’re like okay well this is getting in for 1.0 no matter what, like all the resources go make it happen type features, there’s only like three of them. So suddenly our roadmap is just like Masteries, Item Factions, and Performance Improvements. It’s kind of an underwhelming roadmap to release, you know. [Mike laughs] Especially because we’re doing a ton of other stuff, it’s just that those are the only things that we’re like, ‘These will for sure be in, like we’re doing these.’ So really that’s about it.

Q: What are the goals for 1.0?
Aaron: Mike, I’m going to try and answer this question. I want you to correct me if I’m wrong. Okay, well the goals are to obviously have a strong and successful launch, servers to work correctly, no lag, towns to work, to launch an amazing factions system where you’ll have the Circle of Fortune and the Merchant’s Guild, endgame mechanics with the arena and arena of champions, at minimum three dungeons, with the monolith and it being kind of refreshed with possible randomization, not randomization…uh, yeah randomization…
Mike: Unexpected content.
Aaron: Unexpected content. Yeah, because randomization sounds like…
Mike: It implies procedural level generation, yeah.
Aaron: On top of that you will have 15 masteries and five base classes and each one of those masteries is very distinct. The three that are not currently in are the Warlock, Runemaster, and the Falconer that’ll all be dropping by 1.0. So what’s left is polish, the three masteries, and the factions.
Mike: Yeah, pretty well and there’s a pretty big emphasis on the polish, I think for us anyways. A lot of what we’re doing, a lot of what we’re focusing on is the polish. I think it’s pretty obvious that there’s a few sections that need it quite badly.

August 4, 2023
Q: What’s currently the priority for Last Epoch? Endgame? New skills? Or something else?
Mike: I mean, it depends on – there’s lots of priorities that come up and sometimes it’ll be like… Okay if we’re going to pick like the main priority for the whole team then maybe it’s – okay the priority is getting to 1.0 and it’s like, ‘Okay what are the things that are mandatory to do before 1.0 comes out?’ is kind of what it is.
So what’s the most important thing? Oh let’s say it’s like server stability and performance and all that sort of stuff. Well, the people who write dialogue for quests don’t really have much to do in that category so you end up with a ton of different priority elements. So yeah, there’s a lot of things that are called priority, but server stability and performance are really high up there.
Finishing the classes – so a bunch of new skills. Beefing up endgame. A bunch of new content, that sort of stuff, things to do…mechanics, functionality. Improving old stuff that’s been in the game for a while. The Item Factions. So there’s several priorities and things that are getting worked on simultaneously.

Q: Any major things planned for 1.0 besides Falconer, Warlock and factions? Set item upgrades, maybe? Class reworks? New endgame systems?
Mike: Falconer, Warlock and Item Factions are the big headliners for 1.0.

Release Date
EHG will be releasing the 1.0 version of Last Epoch on February 21st, 2024, as per this announcement .
July 15, 2022
Q: Is there any set date for 1.0 Last Epoch?
Mike: Ah, we have an internal goal. So we have a month that we’re like, ‘We’d like to hit that month.’ But there’s not like a, ‘This is it’, and it’s not something that we’re ready to share.

September 2, 2022
Q: How long do you think for the game to get out of early access?
Mike: So this is like a when are we going to launch the game question and unfortunately I don’t have any specific answers for you right now. When it’s ready is kind of the blanket answer. We’re pushing as hard as we can. We’ve got most of the core features that are planned for 1.0 are sort of in and ready, and we’re now working on converting them to multiplayer. There’s new things that we’re adding still as well but it’s more expanding on things that are left and polishing. You know, all those fun things that are super important and time consuming.

The quotes below were taken from in-game chat on the weekend of the 0.9 launch where Judd was answering non-stop player questions in chat (which was awesome btw), so I don’t have a source link for these.
March 10, 2023
Judd: We’re aiming to release 1.0 this year but we don’t have a date specified yet. We’ll be able to target a launch window in the next few months I suspect.
March 11, 2023
Judd: We expect to have 1.0 out this year, yes. We’re doing in-depth planning for the rest of 2023’s content releases starting next week. We wanted to see how the 0.9 launch went first!
Judd: We are intending to release 1.0 later this year, 2023. No launch window just yet, we’re getting into detailed planning for the rest of the year starting next week. We needed to see how 0.9 launch went!
May 12, 2023
Q: When will 1.0 release?
Mike: When it’s ready! Sorry, I do not have any information on the specific release date for 1.0, but it’s something that we have an internal goal for. It’s something that we’re working towards and that I’m confident in. You know it’s serious when we start setting up marketing stuff for it. [Mike laughs]

May 23, 2023
Judd: 0.9.1 Rising Flames continues the mission of updates, fixes, and increasing the overall quality of Last Epoch before our large upcoming 1.0 release later this year.
Source: YouTube Link
June 2, 2023
Q: Will the missing masteries be released before or with patch 1.0 (full release)?
Mike: With patch 1.0 full release later this year. All the masteries are coming this year. What’s that like seven months max? Less than seven months because we’re on the second.
Source: YouTube Link
June 16, 2023
Q: Will Diablo 4 seasons and POE 2 affect the release of 1.0, and how are you planning to work around them?
Mike: We have a pretty good idea of when PoE2, D4 seasons, and releases and things like that are happening. We don’t know for certain but we have rough estimates that we think are pretty good because we’ve played these games for a long time. I’m sure people have a pretty good sense of roughly when these things are going to be. We think we do anyways, just because we play a lot of these things and have our own that we’re releasing. You get a feel for when these things are going to start to happen.
So we have planned around those releases for when we want our releases to happen. So far, in the last year or so – basically since 0.9 released where we dropped multiplayer, all of the releases have happened as we’ve expected them within about a week. If things keep on the path we expect we should not be conflicting with anything. We got a little lucky with that. [Mike laughs]
There are people who are working and have worked in industry for a while, and a lot of us have been a part of this for a long time now. You get pretty good at making educated guesses. We’ve got a few – like this is the most likely one and this is what we’ll do if this happens, this is the second most likely one and this is what we’ll do if this happens type thing. We’ve got contingency plans and everything.
If it can’t be avoided at all then we won’t, but we do plan to – because we know a lot of people like to play more than one ARPG and we don’t want people to have to choose between different ones if we can avoid it. Also, if a new release hasn’t come out for either of the other two in a month or so then it’s much more likely that people will be ready to hop into this one. So yeah, we do try and strategically place our releases such that they don’t collide with Diablo and PoE.

Q: How is your development schedule coming along? Can we still expect the huge update later this year?
Mike: Yeah, schedule’s going on as expected. No surprises recently, which is great.

June 30, 2023
Q: Is 1.0 still coming out this year?
Aaron: There is not an official release date announced but the current goal is this year. Correct? Is that correct?
Mike: Yes. I was trying to point at you to be like yes, but I pointed the wrong way. [Mike laughs]

July 14, 2023
Q: Is 1.0 scheduled to come out this year?
Mike: We have previously, sort of in unofficial channels, said that our goal is this year. I’m not prepared to say a date or anything like that. We do have an internal date that we’re working towards that I’m quite confident on. However, until someone says, ‘Here’s the date, go ahead and say it Mike’ I ain’t saying it. You can’t make me.
I’m like something that don’t crack…like, I don’t know, a really hard nut. Like a hazelnut. Yeah! Or that last pistachio in the bag that you just like – it’s just sealed! It’s fused shut. Only like a welding torch will open it up. I don’t know what I’m talking about. [Mike laughs] Alright, moving on. Mike you’re crazy.
[This made me laugh, so I decided to include it.]

Q: Cant wait for Last Epoch 1.0. Please don’t disappoint. Are we still far away from full release?
Judd: It’ll be here before you know it. So much polish and good stuff going into the game right now! But remember, 1.0 for us is just kickoff.

July 21, 2023
Q: How long until full release, approximately?
Mike: We don’t have a set release date that we’re prepared to give an approximate timeline for. It has been said by other people in the company on public forums that our internal goal is this year, and nothing has changed since then. But you didn’t hear it from me. [Mike laughs] No, things are going really well.
It’s so frequently that I’ll look at our internal patch notes channel and I’ll be like, ‘How did we not have that in the game yet? Like what were we thinking? Well, it’s because it wasn’t easy to do and we just developed the tech for it last week. Okay, fine.’

August 11, 2023
Q: Will I have to buy the game again when it fully releases?
Judd: Of course not! If you can play the game right now you’ll be able to play at release.
I see a couple comments doubting if 1.0 will ever come out… I know it’s been a long journey to go from ARPG players banding together through Reddit, going through Kickstarter, and building this large game… but our next patch and 1.0 are not far away now. Thanks for your support and helping the dream come to life!

August 11, 2023
Q: How soon is the roadmap to 1.0 implementation?
Mike: Well, the goal for 1.0 is still this year. So, you know, there’s not a ton of time left in that estimation.

August 11, 2023
Q: When is 1.0?
Mike: I don’t have a specific date for you right now that I can share, I’m sorry. I would love to be able to tell you a date. I don’t actually know the exact date, but I could get pretty close…just from like logic.
Kain: [In Twitch comments] We have a goal for this year, we’re not yet ready to share a date currently.
Q: Okay, is it before 2024?
Mike: That’s the goal. I don’t have a specific date I can share with you or hard information I can say yes or no to, but the goal is this year still.

August 23, 2023
Q: The goal is to release Last Epoch 1.0 before the end of the year, right?
Judd: That is certainly the intention right now. However, it is very dependent on the quality of the game at that point. We want to make sure that the game is at the quality that our players expect and deserve. If it is not ready by then, we’ll be comfortable holding on to it either way. 1.0 is coming out not too far in the future anyway at this point.

September 1, 2023
Q: Do you plan to release another patch with specializations (Falconer or Warlock) before the end of the year or will you wait for 1.0 to add them in?
Mike: So the next patch that’s coming September 7th will be 0.9.2 and that will include Runemaster and a bunch of other stuff. The next patch after that – there may be small hotfixes that come after that to fix small things, like if there’s a translation mistake in the localizations…which there will be lots of those. So we’ll do some hotfixing, but then the next content patch after 0.9.2 will be 1.0 and that will be later this year and that will include Falconer and Warlock.

September 8, 2023
Q: How realistic is it that 1.0 will be released by years end? The progress made has been amazing but isn’t it a little rushed with all the bugs/fine tuning remaining to be done in 3-4 months? Is it possible it’ll be pushed back a little to early-mid 2024?
Mike: We have no plans or desires to push 1.0 into 2024 at all.
If something goes really really wrong, it could theoretically delay the launch. I have confidence in this release window being met.

September 15, 2023
Q: Are you going to release any more content before official 1.0 release, or this is the last major update planned for now?
Mike: This is the last major update planned pre-1.0. The next major patch will be 1.0. It’ll be later this year. It’ll be sometime in December. Hopefully that’s obvious when we say this year and there’s so little time left in the year. [Mike laughs]

September 20, 2023
Q: Is delaying 1.0 an option if it is needed to get online play to a proper playable state?
Mike: If a good enough reason came up, yes we would look at delaying 1.0 if needed.
I do not expect that to happen and something would have to go catastrophically wrong at this point.
