Unique Enhancing Rune to make uniques viable late game

Just a quick idea: How about a Rune to enhance uniques by running a re-roll of a unique?

e.g. A Rainbow Edge is a pretty cool sword early to mid game but it rapidly becomes less useful vs higher level one-hand swords. So how about a way to “re-forge” it into something more viable for end game use while still keeping its uniqueness/abilities.

Points:

  1. Obviously the re-forge would be within reason to prevent OP breaking. (E.g. lower attack speed than original but more damage or vice versa etc.)
  2. The enhancement could favour one stat over the another randomly or fixed - e.g. a Rainbow Edge could drop one of the elemental melees in favour of boosting another randomnly. Or a Third Eye Ring could swap crit chance and multipler the other way around.
  3. The Rune used for this re-forging would be VERY hard to drop
  4. The Rune would never break/fracture the unique.
  5. The resultant enhanced unique would become untradeable.

Just a thought from someone who has plenty of stash pages of uniques he is unlikely to ever use… :wink:

I would just like a way to upgrade the base item of the unique. It should stay in the same class of item, but upgrade to the next tier. It should also lose the old base item implicit and gain the new base item implicit.

It would be a neat way to upgrade uniques without changing what the unique does.

Could work… but the lower level uniques may still be useless if only the base changed and not the actual unique rolls getting better…

I was thinking of something more like The Claw which becomes The Fang… both the base & stats are improved but it is functionally the same.

I think, this is a fantastic idea!
