This game is not just a Diablo killer

Last time it looked like D4 was alive and kicking and I’m pretty sure they will sell more addons then LE has active players… by a lot. The only thing that kills Diablo is blizzard and everyone who announces “the next Diablo killer” is as usefull as another grain of sand on a beach.

Well diablo4 has a huge playerbase, if you think it will die than le should be dead by your criteria already. Diablo4 has more viewers on twitch than last epoch has active players, think about it.

I still don’t get why a game has to be insert biggest game in the franchise here-killer. It’s not a zero sum game, people play both, EHG (& GGG) play both & you can bet your arse that Blizz devs play other arpgs.

Nobody’s going to be burnt at the stake for enjoying other games.

Because most people are tribal. That team losing means my team is winning. I think it’s because there are a finite number of people at the tribal level, and there is some lower-level ‘wiring’ where that makes tribalism make sense. If it didn’t provide some advantage, it wouldn’t be prevalent.

If you aren’t strongly tribal it just seems super fucked up. And it definitely doesn’t scale to 8 billion people.

But that doesn’t make sense, because the ones in the supposed “winning team” are here on the “losing team” forums, making demands and suggestions that would, according to them, make the “losing team” up for the fight, and potentially even become the new “winning team”.

I don’t think they’re tribal. They’re just lost in their own feelings and needs.

That isn’t important for the tribal mentality. You see it all the time in sports. You can be extremely tribal even if your team is weaker than the rest.

Tribalism in sports (and, as an extension, for gaming) doesn’t really provide an advantage on a community level, just mostly on a personal level. It’s usually more prevalent on people that have issues in their lives and this extreme focus serves as a deflection of that.

And extreme tribalism in sports often takes the form of “I’d rather my <insert hated rival team here> lose than my team wins”. I should know, my stepfather is exactly like this.
Which, in the case of gaming, takes the form of “I hope <insert game I don’t like/visceraly hate> fails miserably”.

To this type of mentality, seeing the object of hatred succeed is complete anathema.

EDIT: It should be noted that this type of mentality doesn’t only apply to sports/gaming. For example, most types of bigotry fall under this as well. It’s the whole “This subgroup is different than me so I’m going to hate them and bond with other people that feel the same”.

I don’t think LE or any other game is going to kill D4. I just think its lifespan won’t be very long, and they’ll be looking to put out the next sequel much sooner than they did with D4

Personally, I don’t like D4 much, even though I can admit it’s not a bad game. It lacks in certain aspects for me, but everyone must admit their combat feels good for the most part and the graphics are gorgeous.

However, I doubt D4 will have a shorter lifespan than D3. All indications so far point to D4 being more successful than D3 ever was. And if their expansion model pays out like it did with WoW, I’d say D4 will probably stick around longer than D3 did before D5 comes out.

well there was 11 years between D3 and D4 release. I think it will absolutely be less than 9-10 more years before D5 comes out. D3 had a huge expansion that reinvigorated interest in the game, but Reaper of Souls only came out 3 years after D3’s release. They’re less than 2 years away from that point with D4, so Diablo had better at least be in the game by then.

and don’t get me wrong, I played D2 and D3 and D4. I just think 4 was very dissapointing and wish it had been better.

D4 will have an expansion now. They plan on having yearly expansions like they did for WoW. No idea if that model will stick or not.
But it is most likely that Diablo will only come with an expansion with the current model.

I felt the same for both D3 (even with RoS) and D4, but of the two I still like D4 better. And I feel it has much more ground to stand on than D3 did. And if D3 lasted over 10 years, I expect D4 to do the same. Even if I would have preferred it to be a game closer to D2.

When I was playing D4 with my friends at release we had fun with the campaign and quit very shortly after reaching endgame. We only played like 2 hours of it. I doubt my friends will ever come back to play that game since they are not as into arpgs (the diablo likes) as I am.

Back then I told them that the game still needs a few years and at least an expansion to be really good. They will get there but it will take time.
I still think this will be the case. Though I’m very interest in how big the next expansion is acutally going to be. If it is just an overpriced slice of content that will follow the live service mantra of “patch it later” then it is going to be a mess. Especially with the 1 expansion a year model.

D4 expansion is launching with season 6 on Oct 8th. New class and mercenaries are the big things that have stuck in my head. Hatred (Mephisto) is the big bad.

I’m liking s5 quite a bit. Seems like maybe they are expanding the skill system a little bit. I certainly hope so.

I was surprised to see them add mercenaries given where they are with D4 (build-out wise).
But D2 and D3 had them, so I guess they are core now. I did like that the merc skill trees looked more expansive in D4. and that there were skills in the merc’s tree that would trigger/synergize with player skills.

I hope they add a cube. Still no Tyrael, as far as I know.

With a game that devs are too cheap to make their own engine , yea its not a killer of anything.

It has gone through many changes since then for the better, it’s incredibly fun. Unllike this hot lag fest of a game

Why do you bother coming to the forums of a game you obviously don’t like just to trash talk?

I’m not criticizing you, I’m honestly curious as to why you would bother wasting your time doing that. Does it make you feel superior in some way?
I honestly would like to know because I would never be bothered to go into D4 forums or any other game I don’t like just to trash talk about it, as I consider it a waste of my precious time and I understand that there are people that like it, even if I don’t.

I visit forums of all games I play and used to play in hopes that some day they will become better, I’ve tried LE inthe last month but it’s still the same as I left it so It’s not like I’m speaking out of my rear end. It’s not trash talk if it’s what you believe.

This I disagree with completely. It’s like saying that it’s not racism if it’s what you believe.
If you are actively insulting both the devs and the game, then it’s trash talk.

Was it you that told me that the devs don’t even have access to the game engine? I believe it was. Truth hurts, they are too cheap to make their own game engine. this is not trash talk, it’s speaking truth. Sorry if that truth hurts. This game had so much potential and I sitll feel it can get better, some day…

In d4 I can play on my pc and then go on my xbox with the same progression. If LE was able to do something like this and actually fix their performance issues I would probably play it.

It would, if it was the truth. Mike has said about this very issue that Unity was the best choice for when they were starting out and were only a handful of people. And that making a new engine now would stop development for years.
Which is obvious when you look at it.

Also, just so you know, they actually have to pay more for using Unity than they would if they made their own.

Consoles will eventually happen in the future. But you’re comparing a company that started with a handful of people to a multi-billion dollar company that has thousands of developers.
So ports are not a priority for now.

Fair points, im my own defense I am not on d4 forums trash talking other games like this OP did here. I’m done I will head back under my rock now.

That is also a fair point. There are better ways to say that you like a game without having to trash talk or even compare to other games.
