My whole PC lags when I start loading into a Zone

Hello,

I could not find something similar in the bug forum. My problem is that when I load into a zone my whole PC just “lags”. When I finished loading into the zone everything is fine. Just when much happens on the screen then the performance and the FPS are going down. (Thats a thing that you guys already know)

My question is, is my topic something that happened to someone or the QA Team before?

I can do a video and show you how it looks like.

Thanks a lot!

Hey, Welcome to the forums…

Loading into a zone does sometimes cause a lag or freeze but its usually related to loading data from a harddrive and shouldnt be long enough to be interpretted as lag unless your system is under spec for playing the game or is busy doing something else while you are trying to play.

LE is also still in beta and does have performance related instability - crashes, freezes, fps spikes - so if you are trying to run the game at settings that are too high for your system hardware then its very likely that you will experience freezes etc…

If you post your dxdiag export, in-game settings (le_graphicsmanager.ini) and player.log then I can try and see what could be causing your “lag” when loading in.

Hello,

thanks for your reply. The language is in german I hope that doesnt matter.

Can you tell me where I can find the (le_graphicsmanager.ini) and player.log data? Or should I screenshot you my graphics settings?

Thanks a lot!

On Windows the files are in:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Eleventh Hour Games

The dxdiag screenshot doesnt help - you need to chose the “Save All Information” option and upload the txt file here… There is much more information in the text file, including info on crashes that will help.

Quick question. Are you overclocking your system? The base clock for a AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700X is 3.7ghz but yours is reporting at 3.9.

DxDiag.txt (112.8 KB)
le_graphicsmanager.ini (520 Bytes)
Player.log (296.1 KB)

Alright got it!

Uhm no I didnt overclock my CPU…

Ok…

Player.log looks pretty much like everyones… the usual game debug messages and normal errors are there. I am not a unity dev so I tend to look for things that are out of the ordinary but I dont see anything here that I havent seen before… Cant see any timeouts or abnormal loading errors etc… Obviously the EHG devs might notice something but I cannot.

In-game settings… With your CPU & GPU 2070, you should have no problems running at the settings you have configured… Personally I would use the Exclusive Full Screen mode (seems more stable) and I would set the framerate limit to something lower than 144 to save my GPU some thermals and give it processing breathing space for busy moments without maxing out for long… Lets face it, this game is not a first person shooter where every little frame is important… That said, I doubt these settings are the cause of your whatever “lag” you are experiencing.

With this in mind… If you monitor your CPU & GPU, harddrives, memory etc - do the components max out when your experience the lag?

From your DXDiag…

  • You probably have a slight clock boost set in your Bios for your cpu (maybe an auto config setting)… The AMD spec says the base clock is 3.7 and yours is 3.9. This is not usually an issue - people with redline hardcore overclocks have had problems with LE - mainly because its not optimised so if you let it, it will push your hardware and things can get unstable and freezes are possible.

  • LE does have issues with other applications running - so I would suggest that you temporarily, while testing, disable or dont run anything else to see if this has any impact on your “lag” issue… This includes things like graphic overlays (nvidia/steam etc) and any streaming etc… Whatever it may be, just temporarily dont run it to see what happens.

  • I see you are using the VB-Audio virtual devices… I doubt this is part of the problem but as simple things like mouse software have had issues with LE (specifically the Unity game engine) I would suggest that you 1) update it to a newer version and 2) consider disabling it just as a test to see if it is impacting the game - obviously sound & music is loaded at the start of a map so its possible it is involved…

  • Same idea for drivers of any hardware in your system - double check they are all updated & working properly.

  • Also, earlier in the year there were Windows Updates that messed with fps in games so its possible that you may have an update or something that failed and is messing around on your system. 19043 is fine but check your windows update for optional updates or any failed updates.

  • You are loading the game off the M.2 860 Evo 550MB/s so I seriously doubt that the lag you are having is related to load times unless there is something wrong with your drive or something else running at the same time… I have a Sabrent NVME drive rated at 3500MB/s and the game is virtually instantaneous when loading a map on my old i5-7500/1060/16gb system. There is zero freeze or anything I would consider as lag. Even when I used an 860 Evo (not m.2) the game loaded in a few seconds and the only “static” portion was the load screen… the game was immediately active when the load screen changed… If you run Samsung Magician it should tell you if there is anything wrong… I know SSDs dont like to be full (i.e. they need space to move things around internally for wear levelling) and yours is very full (45gb/1TB) but I am no expert in this regard as to say if this is possibly the “lag”.

  • I havent looked at the network traffic of the game specifically (I like to think I have a life), but the chat feature obviously does try to connect to EHG servers… Perhaps there is a timeout or delay that happens when it reconnects when loading a new map… There is nothing in the game log about this, but maybe a timeout of some description could explain the lag.

  • Your dxdiag diagnostics (end of the file) dont show anything other than a possible .net related issue with the Overwolf Updating sofware… Its the only thing crashing… Again, I seriously doubt this is related to the “lag” issue but you may like to fix that one. Could just be Overwolf or you might need to update your .net.

  • Are there any errors in your “View Reliability History” or Event Viewer… Something like warnings about failing read/writes on the harddrives or memory issues? Anything really that the system is worried about?

  • Last possible question… Is this happening on all your characters and in all maps?

Without anything obvious that could be the problem, maybe you should post a video of it happening on a few map loads?

Hey man,

Wow thanks a lot that you looked into it and gave me some options and opinions!

I found something out what I cannot describe. When I change the Display Mode in LE to Windowed, what clearly is not what I wanna play with, I have 0 lags. Like no stuttering in the loading screen and even though no lags in the maps when something like “meteors crush from above into the screen”.

I propably think it is something with my NVIDIA Settings but I dont know

Thats interesting… I know people have had issues with the various display modes before… Its usually problems with Alt-Tabbing and things like that but I dont recall anyone mentioning lags as such - stuttering and screen tearing issues yes, not no lag/freezes…

Perhaps you have found something here the devs can fix… Would be good if you could mess around a little and see if you can figure out exactly what steps/configs/driver settings cause the problem… Then the devs can replicate the issue and hopefully deal with it…

So I just found out when I set VSYNC to HALF then I dont have the stutter/lag in the loading screen. Doesnt matter if it is exclusive or maximized window.

Wow.

To confirm: this is the Nvidia Driver Setting/Manage 3D settings/Vertical Sync/Adaptive (Half Refresh Rate)

And you are using Geforce Game Ready Driver 471.41?

Would be interesting to see if you manually dropped the framerate in-game to roughly 70-80fps (half of your monitor hz) if it did the same thing as the adpative refresh @ half.

So I checked my NVIDIA 3D Setting and on: Manage 3D Settings → VSYNC - it stands on “use settings for 3D applications”. I just can change it to on/off or fast.

Im using the GeForce Game Ready Driver 471.68.

You think I can change the VSYNC Settings manually to on/off or fast and then change it in game again? I might test it, but at the moment im super happy that I finally can play on Ultra without lags in the loading and no lags in the maps.

I mean I knew it wasnt because my RTX 2070 was to slow for ultra settings because as I said in the loading screens my whole PC lagged. On my second Monitor I was watching a video and the sound was fine but while loading in LE the video lagged as hell also like my mouse.

I also tried it without my second monitor connected but nothing changed in the end.

Anyway I thank you for your help and time! I dont know should we close this thread or leave it open for other ones?

Cheers

Edit: My framrate is round about 40- 65 fps while in action - but it feels really smooth.

Hey… Should probably leave this open for now…

I know the devs look at these messages - even if they dont regularly reply so your efforts are still useful for improving the game… I am willing to bet someone will see this and go “Ah, I know whats causing that problem” and it will get fixed…

Glad your issue has been solved with something so relatively easy as a setting or two.

For this kind of game 60fps is imho more than enough - especially if you dont get spikes… I play on my old 1060 and get around 40-55 on very low settings and the game is stable and framerate is smooth… cant really ask for more imho…
