My fix for constant crashing

DxDiag.txt (75.3 KB)

I have included 2 images and a text document. It shows my system specs in system information and DxDiag. The picture shows my Afterburner “UNDER” clocking.

I had originally bought the game and crashed about 100 (exaggeration) times in the span of 1.5 hours. With my GPU getting capped immediately opening the game I decided to fiddle with some underclocking and see how it works out. While this option is not for everyone, MSI Afterburner users might be able to benefit. I did not have to underclock a whole lot, barely anything to be fair, but its quite noticeable when temps come into play. I also advise you to turn on “Streamer Mode” from within the game itself, it disables some graphics options which is what we want, disable it all.

I believe the reason for the crashes is the GPU is stressing out and shutting down the application asap. If you have a similar system you can give a shot. I have now played an additional 7+ hours (2 sessions) with 0 crashes and 1 minor hanging freeze (roughly 1 second freeze). If anyone has any questions feel free too ask.

Hey, Welcome to the forum…

Thanks for this information… You know that the R9 390 is basically the same as a R9 290 but factory overclocked… Your suggestion is likely working because your device may have a aggressive overclock and your underclock is making it more stable… Especially for LE which obviously has performance issues…

Others have had similar success by limiting the framerate manually to prevent the GPU from maxing out and becoming unstable… Did you try that before this more advanced approach?

That’s a very good point, thank you for pointing that out. I forgot I did include an fps limiter (in-game) at the same time of messing with the settings. Under-clocking was the last fix I tried and is what finally kept my GPU temp down to a more reasonable level (70’ish C, was almost 90c before).

Good info… Should help give others who are struggling some more options to try out… Others have found that their overclocks caused some instability but none tried an underclock - they just disabled their overclocks.

I think a lot of this will improve when LE gets more stable/optimised but thats a ways off I think…

Re your temps… Your card is older now so its likely not performing at its best (old thermal paste, maybe a clogged heatsink etc) so keeping it around 70 is probably a good thing. if I recall the 290/390s had a max of 90 degrees ish… so 70 should be a good target… When playing LE with my current 1060 I enable a more agressive fan curve in Afterburner to keep it below 70 - probably not neccessary but I hate the smell of hot silicon…
