More affixes with combined beneficial and harmful effects

Affixes like the one that adds flat fire damage to throwing skills in exchange for taking more fire damage add a lot of potential depth to builds.

You’ll have to make a win/loss analysis and figure out if there are efficient ways for your class/mastery/build to make up for the harmful effects in a way that they’re still worth using.

There are already uniques which do this, but I’d love to see it on more affix shards as well.

Some examples could be:

Subfix shard:

  • x% reduced healing potion effect
  • x% of health gained from potions is converted to mana

Prefix shard:

  • Reduce tier of all subfixes by 1-2 (dependent on tier of this shard)
  • Increase tier of prefix other than this shard by 1-2
(And a second version that fits the subfix slot, increases subfix tier and reduces prefix tier)
    (Can’t increase above 7 or below 1)

Subfix shard:

  • When you’re hit, take an additional x damage which can’t be mitigated
  • x% of the additional damage taken is added to your mana pool

Even if my examples aren’t to everyone’s liking, the concept itself is what I care about and want to see more of.
Anyone thought of some shards in this style that they think would be cool?

I am also a big Fan of trade-off affixes.

I also hope we might get some base types with those kinda effects as implicit.

I do like the idea of having items that are not totally positive for us. I’ve thought the opposite for long, but in fact the idea is really cool.
This way, we would have to think deeper our builds and consider something not only to survive and damage enemies, but also to counter the drawbacks of our gear. And in a story point of view, it seems logical that randomly found items could have flaws.
Good idea!

I know alot of people already stated opnions here in the forums, about not likeing trade.off choices, be it uniques, skill spec trees or elsewhere.

There are some people that simply want to get stronger.

So i think having some of those things as options is great.
But there should probably nothing forcing you to pick those.

That is my first reaction. But when I think deeper I find it would make the game more superficial. That’s why now I like the idea of a negative counterpart.

Of course, I also don’t think that everything should be a tradeoff. None of the current shards should be remade to fulfill this, but rather new ones should be added.

Oh and needless to say, the positive effects should generally be stronger/more valuable on these shards with tradeoffs than those with only positive effects.
Think of the negative effect as a way of taxing the player in order to pay for the positive effect.
This way the devs can also add stronger and more unique shard effects that might otherwise be considered OP. Just like how many uniques are balanced.

It’s not that the player doesn’t become more powerful, it just requires you to plan around the negatives and rise above them. No one would use shards with tradeoffs if their positive effect doesn’t potentially surpass those which don’t require a tradeoff.

Yeah, and ideally you’ll pick and choose drawbacks that are easier for your build and/or playstyle to overcome. Some builds might really suffer from certain tradeoffs, but another one might be very suited to deal with them. That’s where a lot of planning and strategy comes into play. Like how much you sacrifice to counter a tradeoff, and whether or not it ends up being worth it.

There can also be more straight forward tradeoffs than my previous example, like granting extra armor at the cost of health.
