Hello, I cannot play Last Epoch (Both Steam version or standalone).
When I first purchased Last epoch on steam, the game ran fine I put 46 hours in. Now however I am lucky if I press ‘Login’ and the game doesn’t crash.
I have tried, Validating files on Steam. A clean Install of Nvidia drivers using DDU in safe mode, Completely re-installing the game on Steam and trying the standalone client.
I am at a loss trying to play this, even if I can get to the character select and get in-game it’s mere minutes before I crash, I would greatly appreciate help resolving this issue.
The logs you have provided as showing that the game just stops before it has even completed initialising the game engine. It stops logging anything so there isnt any further data to work from that could indicate what is going on.
The diagnostic section of your dxdiag report (at the end) shows that the Last Epoch.exe is just hanging each time without any crashing or additional information… I.e. the game just stops executing for no apparent reason.
This all makes it pretty hard to try and figure out what is going on…
Some questions:
What changed between when you last played LE and now? Anything - doesnt matter how insignificant… Updated apps, changed drivers, installed something new - anything…
When specifically did you last play LE? can you remember what version?
Are you running any other applications when you try and play LE? Is anything else running at the same time?
If you View Reliability History on your machine, do you see any Critical Events or Warning about anything happening on your system?
What has changed. I have kept Last epoch installed & updated on Steam since I last played. as its been sometime I have done various routine windows updates, installed other games etc, just everyday usage of OS.
Maybe Dec 2020, been a while, Hence why I even tried complete re-installs in case of old beta stuff causing issue.
Only other apps running are usual things, Wifi, Mouse software, Windows Security, and Steam All these things were running before without issue.
Everything is fine until trying to play Last epoch, recent days history show many times ‘LastEpoch.exe has stopped responding and was closed’.
Hmm… Nothing obvious there… Although any of the “everyday usage of OS” could have included something - e.g. sometimes a newer windows update or gpu driver can cause problems that were never there before… sometimes installing a new app or game can override or update a shared / common dll and mess stuff up. The problem is that everyones setups are subtly different so when there is no blatanty obvious cause of an issue its literally pot luck when trying to figure things like this out.
Steam installs sometimes need to be totally reset manually (uninstalls/reinstalls dont actually remove all of steams data for a specific game) but if you say this is happening on the Standalone player then thats moot because thats a separate install entirely.
The le_graphicsmanager.ini settings should be ok and the file doesnt seem to be corrupted… Your settings shouldnt be a possible cause of a problem.
Your player.log stop just before the game would have loaded the Saves etc so maybe there is something wrong with your config folder/save files…
Using the standalone player (to remove Steam from the equation), try removing the Last Epoch folder entirely.
ie… backup C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Eleventh Hour Games and all subfolders. Then delete the content of the Eleventh Hour Games folder entirely and start the game - it should recreate everything as if you just installed and ran it the first time.
Post the new player.log and auto-generated le_graphicsmanager.ini after this attempt - maybe it will have something more to go on.
Somehow the game runs now despite initially crashing, I’m not sure quite why. I did 2 things.
I un-installed a sperate game on steam ‘Super People’ and removed its GeeGee anti-cheat client, which theoretically should have zero impact as it should not have been active.
Unchecked Steam cloud save (something I have tried already without success), launched the game, It worked. Exited game re-enabled Steam cloud, game ran fine.
I managed to play for quite sometime without, any crashes. this issue seems to have resolved itself as mysteriously as it started.
Honestly, when things are bizarre like this anything is possible… The trick is to just keep trying in a methodical way to figure out what the issue could have been.
Super People & GeeGee… in an ideal world they shouldnt interact with any other game but its possible. I cannot find specific game engine/development info on Super People so I dont know what tech they are using to guess at this possibility… But Unity (the game engine LE uses) does have odd interactions with other apps - e.g. Citrix & Unity dont play nice - so its very possible… and why its recommended not to run any other apps while playing LE…
Steam Cloud - personally hate it and never use it anymore… Had far too many instances where is f’d up my saves in multiple games due to the syncing not working or corrupting files… The toggle you did, may have had the same affect as my suggestion to clear your local saves to see if they are messed up… I wouldnt worry about trying again… Steam, while great as a library and shop for games, does do odd things… I have done game file verifications where the first verify found nothing & immediately running another found problems… So its VERY possible that just trying again and again could have forced Steam Cloud to sync properly and fix whatever the issue was…
Whatever worked… I am glad you are playing…
Be sure to backup your Last Epoch folder regularly just in case.
