I feel your pain as a player who also struggles with attention problems (ADHD). I also feel like the boss fights in LE are pretty well designed to help a player pay attention with how telegraph heavy the bosses are. PoE boss style on the other hand I found to be way more reactionary and require more quick thinking which tends to be a lot more punishing. A lot of times in PoE I didn’t really know how I died while in LE I tend to have a pretty good understanding straight off the bat.
My take on it is that boss difficulty is a good thing for the ARPG genre and should be encouraged, not discouraged. The model of endless rifts and loot farming is still a core feature and can be had in Last Epoch. If you pass on the bosses, you miss out on a global buff, but it doesn’t prevent you from resetting the Monolith or otherwise playing the game with a more laid back approach.
One thing sorely lacking since the days Marvel Heroes collapsed is engaging team play in ARPGs e.g. raids or group battles. ARPGs lack the traditional holy trinity character roles of tank/healer/DPS. All characters have some tankiness, some DPS and, in certain cases, some healing. But, there’s a lack of defined roles. So, fights have to be based around movement, reaction time and knowledge of mechanics. It may feel onerous to some, but it’s the highest evolution of this genre.
If the mechanics were simple gear checks, such as enraging after X amount of time, I would be against them. But, every fight in Last Epoch has a skillful solution. Gear can mitigate mistakes, but skill is still required.
So, I would not like to see the fights nerfed, but rather the playerbase elevated so that eventually Last Epoch can fill that hole in the genre – 5 or 10 person raids against even mightier bosses. If players want the simple life, skip the bosses and the buffs. You don’t need the buffs to play the game effectively or find good loot.
