Game keeps crashing on new system

I upgraded to a new system with superior specs and the game is freezing constantly. It seems fairly sporadic as in:

It will run for hours and no issues.
The game will freeze upon launching or attempting to goDxDiag.txt (89.9 KB)
Player.log (10.8 KB)
le_graphicsmanager.ini (480 Bytes)
into settings.
The game will freeze within a few minutes and sometimes won’t unfreeze.
The game will freeze within a few minutes, unfreeze, and keep doing that every couple minutes.

I had no issues before when running on a 980ti, intel i5, and 16gb of ram.

Also not sure why the files loaded into the middle of my message, but I hope it’s clear enough.

I’m getting this exact same issue where I am now crashing randomly in maps or when entering maps.

I upgraded from a 1080 to a 3070 yesterday, also updated nvidia drivers to same version thats listed in your Player.log and I’ve now started crashing.

I wonder if there is an issue with the new nvidia driver, it’s only just been released.

At this point, the game has become unplayable for me. I have 344 hours on my Steam record and I didn’t have any issues up until probably the last 5-10 hours of in game time. The only thing that changed is an entirely new system but it’s now a 3080, i7, and 32 gb of ram. I have no issues with any other games besides Last Epoch.

Hey… Welcome to the forums…

Congrats on the new system upgrade…

There are a few things to try to improve things…

  1. Verify the game files through steam… Very important that you do this as game files can and do get corrupted - especially if the game crashes.

  2. I am assuming that you did a full OS reinstall when you moved to your new machine - please can you confirm that you did this and didnt just transfer your boot drive to the new system?

  3. GPU drivers - You are using the latest drivers but I do not recommend using the latest and greatest drivers as these are sometimes not the most stable as the manufacturers are wanting the marketing to reflect improved FPS not neccessarily stability… If nothing else works, you may want to consider rolling back to a previous driver just in case. YOu may also need to do a safe mode reinstall to make sure that the drivers are correctly installed (or use something like DDU).

  4. Obviously your new hardware should be able to handle anything LE can throw at it BUT it is a beta so there are known performance bugs - these have less to do with your hardware and more to do with the game. These bugs present as crashing - especially but not limited to loading new maps or using portals/map transitions… Freezing is also possible as are large fps spikes… I am assuming that you were playing the game on low settings with your 980ti… Ultra settings are KNOWN to cause instability issues (irrespective of hardware) for some players… A way to test for this is to temporarily set everything back down to very low settings with all features disabled or on the lowest possible settings… If the game still crashes with these settings then the issue is NOT performance related… If it stops crashing then you just have to increase the settings slowly to find a balance that is stable… obviously onces the devs get to fixing these known issues then you can up the graphics again…

  5. Vsync and framerate limits serve essentially the same purpose BUT the framerate limiting option seems to have more impact for the game itself and is more stable… I would recommend that you enable the framerate limiting (instead of vsync) and set this to the your monitor Hz as the max (your GPU should handle it fine).

  6. The player.log is not showing any of the normal crashing errors… Your dxdiag diagnostic section shows that the app is Hanging rather than crashing so the errors do not indicate (as they usually do) what is causing the crash (e.g. directx, game engine, gpu drivers)… Hard to say exactly what the cause could be…

  7. Also be aware that third party apps can negatively affect the Unity game engine… for testing purposes, temporarily do not run ANYTHING else on your system other than Steam/LE while trying to resolve this issue. THis includes things like steam overlays etc…

Hi,

Probably not a good idea to piggyback on someone elses support request as things can get very specific to someones setup…

However… Yes… your GPU drivers can be an issue here especially if they did not install correctly with the hardware swap… Sometimes it is better to do a safe mode driver reinstallation (or use DDU) - especially when swapping hardware - as this is the only way to ensure that driver files are correctly replaced and sometimes the drivers are “too clever” when you chose a normal reinstallation - they dont actually replace files that might have been messed up.

I would also recommend that you verify your game files and consider some of the options I mention for @DeathAtDaybreak above…

Last note: the new patch drops tomorrow and its likely to affect everything… Obviously my suggestions might all still apply but its important that you consider that there could be lots of under the hood changes coming tomorrow that could affect the problems you are having.

Oh, I bought an entirely new system as opposed to swapping any parts. My 980ti PC was actually running on the higher end of the graphics scale just fine.

I did try to verify files, as well as a clean reinstall of the game multiple times. It’s hard to tell if there is a temporary improvement, but inevitably it starts freezing up again. The issue seems more common when looking in settings, skills menu, item shop, but it could just be coincidental.

I was only doing vsync because there is tearing for some reason. I know my monitor can run 144hz but I currently don’t have the correct cable to utilize it…I think. Using HDMI because I didn’t realize DVI was so outdated and I needed a Display Port connection. Maybe I’ll try leaving it off and see if that helps.

I don’t think I have anything running in the background besides maybe a Chrome window.

Edit: I’ve been playing on low/medium and the issue remains. Vsync and/or limiting frames didn’t make a difference. Still have zero issues in any other games.

Ok… Lets see what happens after todays patch… The patch notes contain a lot of optimisation notes that relate to graphics settings and framerate limiting etc…

My 1060 can run at higher settings too but then I get lots of instability and freezing issues so it seems to be a trade off at the moment for some… Lot of people have no problem, others with better hardware have issues… Imho I think its related to the state of the game (and game engine version) and gpu/driver combinations…

144hz is probably too fast considering the instability - LE will max out a GPU unless you limit it… I would suggest you drop this down to 60fps and see if that helps… The key here is that your DO NOT want your GPU to remain maxed out… it should be relatively stable at 60-70% and then spike up to max temporarily during busy battles… it should NOT be maxing out at 100% all the time - this is guaranteed to cause instability/freezes/crashes…

Skills menus/inventory windows etc causing issues - well, if you monitor your GPU usage - these actions spike GPU usage (e.g. opening your stash/inventory with lots of 1x1 or 2x1 items) quite significantly… On my system, opening my stash can jump gpu usage from 60ish to maxed out…The higher graphics settings seem to make this worse… when this happens for an extended period of time, then the game starts to get flakey for me… Thankfully these are all known issues that the devs are aware of - we just have to be patient.

Other games that are fine - well, I dont really consider this much of a “test” beyond confirming that your hardware is working physically and not having thermal issues etc… Besides the fact that lots of different games use different game engines & its hard to compare apples with apples, LE isnt released yet and is in beta and has performance related issues that can stress out systems when it shouldnt…

DVI - yip - showing its age now… Displayport & HDMI are much better but you need to check if the monitor supports the versions that your GPU supports (and match them) and YES… cables make a HUGE difference - most people just swap things without realising this.

I mention other games running perfectly to confirm that it doesn’t seem to be an issue on my end with hardware.

And I do recall a lot of people in the online chat mentioning they were having issues with their game despite having much better hardware than I had at the time.

At this point, I’ll just assume there isn’t much that I can do. I’ll just wait for the devs to resolve the issues with optimization and stability.

For whatever reason my 980ti PC could almost run max settings at 60 fps, but my 3080 is struggling in the low end. It doesn’t make sense to me that newer/better hardware is failing to run well despite lowering all settings.

Yeah, that is odd. I’m not having issues on my end. Have same GPU as you playing at 4k resolution.

The only times I’ve had issues with the game were when my CPU overclock was a bit unstable. Once I was able to fine tune that a bit more and do some testing, I haven’t had any crashes.

Obviously it should be working…

Logically I would think that there is something very specific on your setup that is causing this issue… The problem is to try and find out what it could be…

I have helped one person here with a 3080 having problems and it turned out to be the single displaymode setting and everything worked perfectly after that… So it really can be something simple… the trick is to find it.

The only way you are going to find this issue is to systematically test things to tick them off the list… problem is that it could be anything from a third party app to something to do with your monitor/new gpu combination to a refresh issue to a single setting in a driver…

As @AMarq mentioned, he and a lot of other players are fine using new hardware so there has to be something unique to your new setup that needs to be found. (and yes, I dont usually mention overclocks etc but they have DEFINITELY been the cause of problems - and people with higher end systems tend to have auto-overclocks enabled)

Might be a little early, but for now the new patch seems to have resolved the issue. Played a few hours on Ultra settings with no freezing.

Holding thumbs…

Listen… Do your GPU a favour and check the difference between High & Ultra quality settings - honestly imho, there isnt much of a visual difference especially in the heat of the battle and your hardware will thank you… promise… Personally I am waiting till they optimise the game properly before appreciating eye candy…
