Freezing every 10-30 seconds

Was working just fine for about 2 hours. Went to bed, woke up wanted to play again now now I’m plagued with 3-5 seconds of the game freezing up every 10-30 seconds. This even happens in the character select screen so its not because there are to many things going on and my computer cant handle it. In poe I’m able to hold a stable 30 even with a whole lot of minons and particles flying around the screen and I dont expect this game to be as demanding as that one.

Hey… Welcome to the forums…

Remember LE is in beta and definitely has performance issues so you cant really compare it to any other game that might be “as demanding as that one.” Something that might seem “easy” could actually be very system intensive just because the game is running debug code or has not been optimised for performance yet.

Based on your system spec, your processor is fine (I run a i5-7500 and they are almost identical performance wise with yours just having more threads). Unfortunately your GPU is really really really slow and is below the minimum spec for LE…. The minimum, a GTX 660 TI is over 150% faster.

I did a quick comparison on userbenchmark and your GPU is over 400% slower than a 1060 which I use and I run the game for best stability @ 50-55fps with all settings on very low or disabled (i.e. very similar settings to what you run). If I push any faster (the 1060 is actually able to get about 100fps in LE) I start getting crashes and freezes regularly. Just looking at it mathematically I am amazed that you can the get 30fps you have currently set on the framerate limiting without your GPU blowing up.

Anyway… with that reality check… on to some suggestions:

  1. You didnt provide your player.log file so I cannot see what the game is reporting while playing… It could show something that would explain the freezing… If nothing below works then please post it.

  2. Verify the game files via steam - very important that you do this as the game can get corrupted when it crashes or Steam might not have processed an update correctly.

  3. Your windows OS could use an update to 19042/3.

  4. Your graphics driver is from Sept 2020 - I would recommend trying something from earlier 2021… I do not recommend running the latest and greatest drivers on old GPUs but something more recent could help.

  5. There are lots of updates for the Dell XPS 8900… have you installed these? Windows 10 can be a real mess when it comes to older systems and hardware so its always important to make sure that you have compatible drivers etc and updates working…

  6. The last part of the dxdiag file contains a list of all the recent errors on your system… There are quite a few - which could indicate some sort of general instability on your system… especially if you cannot explain the issues with a known event…

    • itunes.exe has crashed often
    • chrome has crashed with a memory issue.
    • heartstone & POE have crashed in addition to LE - all three crashed with a memory issue.
    • Dell Customer Connect service has crashed with the CLR20r3 error which is usually indicative of a corrupted file or something. (imho, Dell bloatware like this does no system any good.)
  7. Based on the dxdiag errors, I would check the Windows Error logs and see if there is anything obvious that windows is unhappy about… After running windows update, I would also run Windows System File Checker to make sure that there are no messed up or missing windows system files. I would also consider running a memory check just to make sure that everything is ok on that front.

  8. If possible, I would also suggest that you monitor your system for a while - i.e. see if there is something running or happening on your system every few minutes. Monitor GPU & CPU temperatures too… It is very important that you dont let LE max out your GPU - you do this by restricting the framerates - unfortunately, that means you may have to go lower than 30 fps and/or consider reducing your screen resolution too.

  9. You are running out of space on your harddrive - this is not good - windows hates running out of space. And its an old mechanical drive so if the game it trying to load anything you WILL notice significant delays especially when loading maps any other incremental loading. If your system it having RAM issues, it could also be thrashing swap space which will freeze up LE easily.

  10. Dont run any other applications while testing LE… disable or temporarily just dont launch anything else… Things like overlays (steam/nvidia) and capturing video/streaming etc are obvious items not to run, but there are obscure apps like Citrix and Teamviewer that mess with LE so its best to leave everything off while trying to play.

Thats odd since I have never had Poe or itunes crash.

When I clicked check for updates it said my grapics card was up to date on 456.71. Searched the web and found an update for it and 471.11 seems to have fixed it which is still weird since it was running just fine for 2 hours.

To be specific (you can see this at the end of the dxdiag file yourself):

Itunes reported multiple AppHangB1 - which are not “Crashes” with an Error window that pops up on your screen telling your what happened. Its more like the app just stopped working for some unknown reason in background - most of the time apps just restart themselves.

PoE & LE have both crashed on RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64 - which is a memory error - usually happens after playing for a while. For LE being in Beta, this is entirely possible… PoE not so much as its been around for a while. The causes of these memory errors can be very hard to figure out without being a developer of the games themselves and can be caused by anything from a driver the game is trying to use to bad code somewhere…

Graphics card updates - I am not sure what you used to “Check for Updates” but Windows Update will not update your graphic cards properly… The best way is to manually go to the manufacturers website and get the latest one.

As to why the game started behaving up after 2 hours… well, normal progession would mean that you would have more items, more character building/passives etc and beginning to attempt harder and more populated levels in the game so it might have been trying to load something and then crashing with the driver… With the game in beta and your system being below spec, anything is possible.
