Drop rates, items, item "hunting"

I would prefer if item drops were scarcer but could be made more deterministic. I want more drop probability for items I’m looking for while I have much less over all item drop. There are ways of doing this with some sort of item hunt system or items being completely zone/boss exclusive with higher drop probability for every time the item doesn’t drop. As it stands I just don’t get exited when a new unique drops because almost everything is not usable for my build.

The upside is that these drops might incite you in to testing something new or make you want to create a new character. The downside is that if you are not that kind of player you might have gotten a lucky drop that you never intend to use, so just a tease. Additionally I don’t like fully equipping a new character with al the unique drops from my other play through. For me the point of the game is to work to gear up a character. If I can just immediately equip a new class with al the best gear what reason do I have then to play with that new character?

This isn’t D3 you can build a bow frost mage rogue… how on earth should thegame know what items you look for? I’m all for more worthwhile drops but that’s hard to pull of with the skill and gear systems in place in LE.

One idea can be every X amount of echoes you enter choose a affix. Items dropped have Y% higher chance to contain said affix. The more echoes you play the more cumulative chance you have to a reasonable cap.

Like in… oh look this echo node looks like a shield and oh boy the chance to get shields there is higher! Like the already implemented system? I’m a bit confused…

I’m sorry to disagree with you , but for me deterministic loot is what tends to kill my arpg enjoyment. I prefer everything to drop everywhere , even if that makes me find something harder , than having to repeat and repeat the same action several times to try to get something.
I prefer to alternate activities, even if thats not optimal , but deterministic loot makes that hard.

You know that almost all endgame items are target loot you need to kill the same old boring monolith boss for over and over again?

Yes I know , and as I said I prefer when games don’t do that. I prefer D3 loot drops (you get more on higher difficulties, but very little stuff is in specific loot tables) than PoE or LE , where I have to fight the same boss several times for loot.
I repeated the same empowered mono boss 5 times (i know that’s not a lot for some people, but for me its boring) and simply stopped playing that character when I couldn’t get one item. I prefer a broader roulette that works everywhere than a targeted one. That’s why I like some trading , just for that elusive item , instead of pigeon hole myself on an activity.
I prefer fun over optimization , i prefer doing lots of stuff for a longer time than an optimized shorter version. But that’s just me , I know some people like it the other way.

Target farm for me is so 80s. You need to trample down the set in stone way to achive XYZ no matter what you actualy want to do. That’s maybe another benefit of trading because you can play what you want and buy the stuff that isn’t dropped by your favorite way to play the game.

On top of it it’s not target farming… if you look at the drop tables there are xyz drops per enemy so the chanes to get the item you want with a meaningfull roll and meaningfull LP on top of it in case of uniques just is a showcase of the problems H&S games have: If you substract the item hunt the game offers almost nothing at all. Stretching said item hunt with rng upon rng on top of rng with an rng cherry on top is LEs way to cover up all the content that didn’t made it into the game but somehow most people ignore this and turn a blind eye on it. Therefor almost all discussions on the topic are doomed from the beginning.

Imma be honest, for some of us, this isnt really a problem., but a feature
I sorta dislike what PoE does where they create games in games.

I dont wanna play towerdefense, I dont wanna do minigames. I want to turn off brain, kill hoards of monsters and collect shiny loot. Just watching my stash grow pleases me. At the end of the day the core loop just has to be good enough, which for me personally, LE is one of the best. Has decent build variety, cool items, and chase too, while also having really good combat vs 1 button builds or auto casting builds, which you can also play if you want!

I’m with you on this and always reffer to jumping puzzles as: “If I want to play super mario I play super mario take this crap away!”.

That’s where I think LE will have the biggest trouble when the game is open to the masses. Rogue playes pretty well and fluid but all other classes are clunky and the overall feel of combat is bad. Even D3 has more impactfull combat and that’s a very low hurdle to take.

Build variety dies when the masses get involved because only the strongest build matters as the past showed us in multiple games and genres.

To me it’s all in the stars but I think the audince will have mixed feelings about LE when it releases without a lot of improvements and polish.

If it doesn’t turn into D3 level of itemization, probably only true for the masses who don’t care to make their own builds in the first place.

I would be in Path of Exile making builds if it wasn’t such a tiresome effort. Sure, I’d be less powerful than the top 12 meta builds, but I’d actually be having fun with the game. I did this once in PoE… never again.

This is something I can do in LE. I don’t care if my builds aren’t as good as what Lizard can come up with, and I don’t need to be able to do 1000s waves in arena or 500+ corruption. I just want to have fun making and optimizing my own builds.

This works well in LE because LE is on the easier side of the spectrum of difficulty. That’s not a bad thing because it allows freedom to test stuff out. The masses might lock differently at this and we possibly end up with one op build for each mastery or even worse for each class.

Well I hope I’m wrong but past experiences make this the most possible outcome.

It’s been miving in that direction for a while now. One of the most common questions is “What’s the strongest build for X?”

Yeah but right now it could be (with a lot of good will and phantasy) just for testing stuff if we come back to the glass half full thing  .

As soon as the doors open for the bigger audience you’ll get the ,eta build questions more and more. On top of that some people just want to turn their brain off and kill hoards of enemys and collect shiney loot and what’s the best way to do so? Follow a guide or even two guides.

As sad as it is the masses will water everything down but that must not be bad because the masses pay the game.

Nope, if “people” were just testimg stuff they wouldn’t be asking that particular question, they’d be asking how stuff works.

Yeah, and 200% fine with that, games are for recreation & sometimes that’s me.

Should’ve pointed at the irony here as it seems… hmmm

That’s everyone sooner or later.

That’s sadly true.
But to add to the discussion, another (negative) factor to consider is streamers. It is, literally, their livelihood to convince people they NEED the ultimate build, with the ultimate items… That of course, will be explained and made easy just here, if you kindly click this youtube link…
Just this week, one of these guys pushed the click-baiting as far as putting “meta” in his thread’s title… Sad.

A game with no streamers at all, like Wolcen or Van Helsing, feels dead. They bring more players by advertising. They are a necessary evil.
But evil for sure, the distorting mirrors of a game’s reality they show hurt gaming a lot in terms of perception by a wider audience.

Some people enjoy copying a build and going zoom. This isn’t bad or evil. That’s a way to engage with a game, it’s fine. Just because you don’t enjoy that, doesn’t mean for some people that is enjoyable.

In LE I’ve made all my own builds, i enjoy it a lot its fun. In PoE 95% of my gametime is playing enki’s arc build. I enjoy it a lot it’s fun. Both of these are viable ways to engage with a game, and are fun.

I don’t know if it’s intended, but it comes off very gatekeepery to say that it’s bad and evil.

It also entirely ignores that sharing builds is a part of the community for a game, trying out what other people have made is a core part of how communities build around games, it connects us together.

Same here. Need specific unique → farm same mono → get bored and stop playing.
Also I have a full tab of dungeon keys, despite it’s interesting mechanic I would like to engage with. But they won’t give me that item I need. So either play as I want or get what I want, not the both.
This will get even worse when seasons will be introduced. I’ve got a few favorite builds, but after each wipe I’ll need to invest hundreds of hours of same gameplay just to get same uniques. There is no point in introducing new endgame content then, cause I will probably sit inside monos farming uniques for the whole season.
There is a single solution that will solve all my problems, but from recent posts it seems devs aren’t even sure if they want to introduce it, so I’m not sure if I will play anymore.

This is such a big thing a lot of people ignore. Each dungeon has really cool uniques, each dungeon is really fun to play through, very few builds actually beenfit from those uniques, and those that do rarely have much transference between them. This isn’t bad, becuase it adds to the flavour. However the main reason anyone ever does the dungeons, is for the vault, for lp stuff, or because you can target farm exalteds.

If none of thats applicable, then theres little reason to do them. Also soulfire bastion is just there lonely, and sure thats because its gambler mechanic at the end isn’t really as useful as the other dungeons over a long period of time on a character. But that doesn’t mean that’s a problem, it has its place, but that place dissapears and now the dungeon is meaningless.

Trade gives so much more choice than we have currently, it would be amazing.
