Over this past week I’ve attempted to get a hardcore character past level 40 and at the end of the day they have all disappeared. I’ve quit the game and restarted and been able to continue playing but around 6:30-7:00pm JST they just vanish. I have looked in the appdata/saves and it shows I have 9 character files but only 5 characters show up in my character list and none of them are the sentinals that I’ve been working on. I’m on steam launcher and I’m wondering if there’s some bug in how it tracks cloud/local save if that’s even a thing. I would try re-installing the game but I’m on a limited data budget for the month and I can’t afford to do that. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey, Welcome to the forum…
Sorry you are having hassles …
Everything is Local to your system right now so if something goes wrong (like the game crashes or doesnt shutdown properly) then your local files can get corrupted.
There is nothing online right now - at least not with EHG servers - so there are no characters stored on a server somewhere…
If you use Steam Cloud saves, then it MIGHT have the missing characters but unforunately I have found that others with similar problems just get the corrupted savegames back. I have personally had such problems with Steam Cloud saves in other games that I never use it anymore.
I am not sure if the devs can “edit” savegames to repair them but honestly during a beta I wouldnt expect them to…
The only advice I can give is what I do myself… I backup the epoch folders before and/or after I play (especially when patches drop) so that if something does go wrong I can try and revert them manually.
Sorry I cannot be more helpful.
Thanks for the info Vapour, I did try re-installing from steam and created a new character but it looks like any new character file gets corrupted and doesn’t save right. kinda bummed cause I was really enjoying the game.
You may want to backup the entire last Epoch folder, then delete it entirely and get Steam to verify the game files… that should clear everything and force the game to make new files when it starts (as though its totally new not just a reinstall) - which should then (hopefully) allow you to create new characters that are not corrupted…
Havent tried this myself, but its what I would do if everything else failed.
I turned off steam cloud saves and that seems to have prevented them from corrupting, but but that could just be incidental to anything else. thanks for the advice, hopefully it’ll help someone else later on down the line.
Glad something worked for you - just a pity you lost your characters. Be sure to manually back up new ones…
