Crashes since the latest patch

Hey there! First of all thanks for all the work you put into the new patch/update. I hope I will be able to enjoy this next phase of the game soon.

Buuuuut… since the patch I encountered some really annoying bugs and crashes. CTD when teleporting to ruined lake, soundbugs and crashes on the way to and on the dreadnought, launcher wont launch (forced to start it in Steam).

Installed it a couple of times, checked file integrity and so on, but it just wont work. I hope its not my trusty rusty old computer telling me that its time for him to retire…

Hey… Welcome to the forums…

Crashes specifically when loading into a new area / map are usually performance based stability problems. The game is obviously in beta and is generally unoptimised so things like this do happen especially if we dont use conservative game settings to compensate… Sometimes after a major patch especially as there is a lot of new content and patches are usually followed within in a week or two with some sort of performance update based on public user experiences.

There are other reports in the bug section about Sound issues so please check there if they apply to you - devs are working on those specifically.

Looking at your player.log - it is full of these errors:
d3d11: failed to create 2D texture & d3d11: failed to create 2D texture shader resource
These are usually reported when the game runs out of available system resources to load new map/area assets or simply cannot load them based on the settings chosen. It seems that this repeats a few hundred times and then the game engine crashes (UnityPlayer).

The diagnostic section of the dxdiag report is empty - I usually use this to confirm the player.log error - it should definitely show the last epoch crashing and probably more… Empty diagnostic reports always make me skeptical or wondering what is going on as there should at least be informational messages from Windows… Please check your View Reliability History and double check that your system is not reporting problems you need to deal with.

From your settings file I can see that you have quite a few settings on Very High and have almost all special features like shadows etc enabled… Based on the player.log error I would say that you should consider changing settings to see if the game can be more stable.

For example, I run a 1060 GPU (about 40% slower than yours) on an i5-7500 with 16gb ram and an NVME drive… I run the game at 1080p all very low settings with all special features disabled/very low settings. I set the frame rate to 60fps. At these settings the game is very stable and I am able to watch netflix on a second 1080p monitor while farming. No crashes and really busy moments in play the fps might drop to 25fps and drop a frame or two in the video stream.

Assuming that there are no GPU driver or OS problems on your system and that the reinstalls have made sure that the game files are not corrupted, I would recommend you test the following configuraton:

1080p, All settings an Very Low quality
60fps framerate limited.
All special features like grass.shadows.aa disabled or on the lowest available setting.

With NO other applications running, run the game at these settings while monitoring your GPU usage. If the GPU usage is between 60-65% while standing in a town not moving or using any skills, then the game should be stable to play test for a while… If its higher than this, then reduce the framerate until the usage is in that window… If its lower than that and is stable after playing awhile/loading into new maps etc, then you can consider increasing some quality settings - I do not recommen going higher than Medium… and make sure that the GPU has enough headroom to handle busy game moments/loading.

and no… your trusty rusty old computer is newer than mine… it doesnt need retiring… just needs a little tlc…

Hey, thanks for your answer. I just realized that my setting where all mixed up. Forgot to change it after the reinstall I think… Tuned down everything to medium and it works like a charm. Only the soundbug is persistent (after casting volcanic orb the footsteps sound like Escape from Tarkov). I will check out the other threads regarding soundbugs. Thanks again and keep it up! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
