For the past handful of days, whenever I log into the game, it sends me into the character creation screen as if I don’t have any active characters (of which I have over 20). I can’t just back out, I first have to create a name, hit Continue and then I can hit Back several times to get to the main character selection screen and play. This is a minor annoyance I can actually sorta live with. However, the real problem that I can’t live with is that I have noticed that some of characters are no longer available to play. Their save files still exist in the directory, but they are not there in the character selection list.
I noticed this first started occurring after I created a new character, and then logged out of the game a few minutes later as I had to leave. After I later returned to the game, the issue started happening. I thought perhaps there was something wrong with the character I created, so I tried to delete it. Instead of deleting, it actually just creates another copy of that character in the selection screen. The character I created was a rogue, but when I delete it, it recreates it as a Sentinel with a primalist character model.
I even tried going to the save directory and deleting it there, only every time I start the game, it recreates the save file and the character. I also tried to copy/backup all the character saves I wanted to keep, emptied the folder completely and uninstalled the game and that didn’t work. As soon as I started the game the corrupted character saves were back and the issue was still happening.
I know the issue, but I have no idea how to fix it, please help!
Please can you post your player.log file… It may contain something indicating what is happening… Unfortunately the files rotate when you restart so it may not have any info on what originally happened (and obviously if you deleted the file). There is a possibility that the game install was messed up causing the problem in the first place, but if you have reinstalled then that would have potentially sorted the original cause.
Are you using Steam? Do you have Steam Cloud Saves enabled? Are you using Steam on multiple machines? Steam Cloud can mess things up if the sync is out of whack…and would explain the recreation of the saves even after you deleted them… You might have to disable Steam Cloud, then login to the Steam website and check the Remote Storage for what savegames are there and remove the corrupted problem ones.
Just be sure to backup any of the working saves before doing anything.
Without some clue in the player.log I can only think that Steam has messed up but I dont even know if you are using that version.
Hello, thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I am using Steam and Cloud Saves are enabled. Steam is only on the laptop I play LE on.
I will try what you’ve mentioned above by copying the saves I want to keep, and disabling the Steam Cloud saves, before I empty the Save folder again.
Full disclosure (and I don’t even know if this has anything to do with it), but I have edited some of the character files. Whenever I start a new character it’s to test a build idea based around a specific unique/mechanic and to save some time/effort, I bump my level to the required level to use said unique(s) and unlock the mastery I want to use. It saves me having to wait and speeds up progressing through the story. I don’t do anything else with the files as I’m not that knowledgeable to be able to figure it out. Again, I don’t know if this could be what caused it because the character I created before this happened was not edited.
Disabling the cloud save and all the saves (replacing them with the backups) did seem to work. The corrupted saves are no longer there, and the characters that disappeared from the select screen are back.
I dont personally use Steam cloud saves because it always messes up for me - on lots of different games… I manually backup my saves now, especially when dealing with early access/beta games.
I didnt read that…
Irrelevant now, but the player.log does show a problem with the character files when it tries to create the list of characters…
