Changed from FullHD to 4k Monitor, but now the game is shuttering and laggy

Hello,

I do have a weird issue, I changed my Monitor from FullHD to 4k Monitor, but with the new Monitor the game is super laggy and is shuttering a lot despite using the exact same game settings as I used to play with the FullHD Monitor. I haven’t changed anything in the game settings, my hardware hasn’t changed either besides my Monitor. I already deinstalled my graphic card drivers and reinstalled them, tried to turn on and off FreeSync in the monitor settings, vertical sync on and off, but it is still laggy. If I switch back to the old Monitor it works again. I tried to put everything on very low graphics now, but it is still laggy, slow and doesn’t run smoothly. Any idea what the problem could be?

My graphic card is: sapphire amd radeon r9 380x oc dual-x nitro (4gb)
CPU: i5-6500 skylake
16 GB DDR4 memory

I can play the game on Ultra video settings without issues on my old FullHD screen, and on the new 4k Monitor it is even laggy on the very low video settings. This absolutely makes no sense to me.

Hey…

I dont intend to be confrontational but I sincerely do not believe this comment… Sorry.

LE has known issues with performance optimisation and there are players with much faster GPUs than yours that cannot run at all Ultra settings at 1080p and experience a decent framerate and not have stablity issues that include fps spikes, freezing, stuttering, artifacts and crashing.

Your GPU is only about 40% faster than the minimum GPU required for the game (660 Ti) and is less than the recommended (1060 or RX 480) so you would definitely have to chose settings on the lower end to play LE @ 1080p without experiencing problems or poor framerates <30…

Anyway… as to your problem.

You havent included your in-game settings (le_graphicsmanager.ini) but I am going to assume that you have kept the low settings on 1080p even on the 4k Monitor? Your GPU is obviously not able to do 4k gaming so its very important to make sure nothing is automatically scaling up on the new monitor.

What Display Mode are you using in game… i.e. Windowed/ Exclusive Full Screen etc? There have been issues with stuttering depending on the window mode chosen… You should try and change those and see.

When last have you updated your GPU driver? You said you reinstalled it but is it a new one? It could be that the new monitor is interacting with your older GPU and there could be a driver issue… A similar issue could be the DVI/HDMI/Displayport etc versions - there might be a signalling issue between your old GPU and new monitor or even a cable might not support what the monitor is expecting.

Freesync/Vsync could also be involved… There have been people saying that they were able to reduce lag by using adaptive syncing in the driver to half refresh rates on UW 1440p and 4k monitors. Again, this all depends on the monitors capabilities as well as any default settings that your monitor might have that could be conflicting with what you have set in the driver…

Last possible idea - in the OSM in the monitor - are there any default settings that could be possibly involved… is the monitor forcing any dynamic modes/refresh rates/ is it one of those that overclocks / does it have a setting for older HDMI/Displayport connections etc…

I don’t know maybe I am blind, but for me it runs ok on ultra lol, well it lags a bit but not anything bad

The recommanded requirement for CPU is intel Core i5 6500 which I am using myself. But I agree for the graphic card lol I am far away from the recommanded specs of a gtx 1060 ^^

Last Epoch requirements

Man, you saved me, this was the problem. I don’t remember why, but I used to play Last Epoch always on windows mode, cause I was having issues with the fullscreen mode and windows mode was the only way to make it work for me. I just put it on Fullscreen mode and tadaaaaa it is working now, no more lags  .

I am still having an other weird issue with FreeSync but with other games, with old games like diablo 2 if I turn the freeSync on then it shutters to the point that I can’t even move my mouse anymore, looks like this then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyRnPwZuS88 . Any idea why freesync is doing this? It actually should prevent the shuttering, but is doing the opposite, once I turn off Freesync in monitor settings it works fine again.

Display mode… ah… glad it was something so easy to fix…

Freesync… Not an expert on it by any means as I dont use it… Assuming you mean on the new monitor… Well, your GPU does support it (at least the first version) but I am not sure the different versions could be an issue… Eg. freesync 1 didnt support hdr… Newer versions also have requirements of the monitors like 120hz refresh rate @ 1080p and handle the fancy Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) features… this is when the GPU can only handle x fps but the monitor shows frames more than once to try and compensate… .e.g. the gpu shows 30fps but the monitor displays it at 60fps… however, if the monitor cannot use low enough refresh rates then Freesync doesnt work and makes things worse. This tends to happen if the GPU isnt well matched to the monitor - which is likely the case in your situation as your GPU isnt intended for a 4k monitor (not even sure you could get 4k monitors when your card was released) - at least not for gaming anyway.

Do you really even need to use Freesync on the old games? Surely they are running at decent framerates already?

Honestly have no idea really… speculating…

Yes I somehow didn’t think at all about the window mode, I was so used to play Last Epoch always in windowed mode that I didn’t even realize it anymore ^^. I am glad that the issue was nothing bad, I was already afraid of the Monitor being broken.

Yea I mean on the new monitor. Ok I see, looks like an fps issue then, I mean could be, especially because the old games run on very low fps, maybe the FreeSync runs into some kind of conflict with the low fps from the old games.
I am even surprised that my g-card can run in 4k at all (at least for videos), I totaly forgot about that it had a display port. I think the graphic card should be 6 years old, think this one came out around 2015 and wasn’t really made for 4k, especially not if you consider the price of the g-card, was only around 200 euros.

I have never used FreeSync before for any Monitor, it is the first Monitor that I own that has this option built-in. I personally don’t think it is necessary, the only issue is that when I chose the gaming mod option on my monitor, it automatically turns on the FreeSync mode and when I turned the FreeSync manually off it puts the monitor back to the standard mode lol. I think I will need to make my own custom setting.
