Given it was the cold DoT from this, none of those stats were relevant & he did actually have 69% cold resist…

Because, while he did mention that 1 Frozen Wolf death, he didn’t say anything about other times, but did say that he gets killed once every two monos, so I’d assume that those stats are somewhat relevant.

To be honest I doubt that he got 1-shot, and instead got hit by multiple things at the same time (or in very quick succession).

It’s not, it’s a dps option (lightning skill, shock chance, lightning pen).

And all of those can be received from other pieces of gear, can’t they? So instead of having 1 piece of a set gear, he could just get those stats on other pieces, while having a proper helmet with defense stats.

To an extent, yes, but it’d be giving up multiple affixes on several slots, in addition to +1 lightning skills not being a “normal” affix & shock chance per Int being only available on the set helm (though depending on how much Int he has it could require 1-2 affixes).

Yeah, the +1 level to all lightning spells is unique, but I think he could get more value out of a T5 affix for just one of the skills. For example, level of lightning blast and level of static orb go on helment as prefixes so he would already have more skill points, while still having space for 2 suffixes (and lets not forget sealed affixes). Level of static goes on relic (on which he currently has a t7 cold damage).

Shock chance on hit could be replaced by T5 Chance To Shock On Hit With Lightning Skills, and even with lowest roll he would have more than he is getting currently through Vilatrias. As to lightning pen, going for a sealed affix on amulet could be a good chase. Sure it won’t be as much, but he could make up the difference with idols.

There are a lot of options for getting a better helmet than Vilatrias.

T7 Vilatria’s Storm Crown Reforged gives 0.8%-1% shock change per int and 17%-20% lightning pen, so he could put it on a helmet with level of lightning blast/static orb (or even both if one of them would be sealed) with the new tier-shuffling mechanic. Then putting Vilatria’s Downfall Reforged on a staff for the “+1 Spell Lightning Damage per 2 Intelligence” set bonus.
