Blurry Text on low resolutions

So, my laptop is a bit of a potato, so i play on lower qualities and resolution. But this time for some reason i was having more issues in certain areas of the game so i lowered the resolution even further and the text became so blurry it was difficult to read. So i did a bit of testing and checked out even lower resolutions and turns out that at the lower resolutions the text becomes so blurry it becomes impossible to read.
This is a first for me as usually lowering resolution does not effect the text in the UI. Is this something thats supposed to happen or is there something wrong with my settings

Hey there…

  1. Can you give the exact resolutions you are noticing this on?
  2. What HZ is your monitor using? What is your monitors native resolution? Sometimes running a resolution too far below your monitors native resolution can cause issues with the monitors own internal scaling and make things blurry etc…
  3. Any chance you can take a screenshot and post it (imgur with link)?
  4. Assuming windows, Are you using any Windows Scaling / Dpi features - these can sometimes cause issues…
  5. Please post your le_graphicsmanager.ini settings file with the settings that you experience the issue using. Even if you have everything on very low settings, things like Window mode can be important.

There are some issues with widescreen and other non standard ratio resolutions so what you are experiencing could be related… There are also instances where the UI doesnt scale down small enough on lower resolutions - you could obviously be experiencing a side effect of this - i.e. its trying to scale but failing to fit things in and the fonts etc are messing up.

Just a guess until you let us know more specifics…

  1. Slightly blurry on 1280x720 and completely unreadable on 640x400
  2. Monitor’s native resolution is 1366 x 768 Hz
  3. No i dont think i am using any scaling/DPI features

Ok…

I dont work for EHG so everything here is my opinion and I am making some assumptions based on what I know and my general tech experience…

I dont think the game has been designed to function at less than 1080p in 2022 without some sort of expected/acceptable degredation in quality or loss of functionality. For example, at 720p, LE cannot show the stash and inventory without overlap, the skill windows are cut off, the Forge and inventory dont fit, the passive screen is cut off… I.e. I dont think the developers ever intended that their game run at less than 1080p.

Even without those functional issues, usually not using the native resolution on a monitor will have visual consequences of some kind.

I do not think this is specifically the text - its the entire image that is blurry.

If I run the game at 720p on my 1080p monitor fullscreen it suffers from blurring caused by the monitor scaling… My one 24" monitor does a better job of the scaling (its a newer higher quality dpi one) than the other from a different manufacturer but they both have blurry images compared to the native resolution.

I experience this in almost any game to some degree - especially if its not a vector/pure 3d type with infinite scaling and no raster images or its purely 2d…

If I set the game to using plain Window mode, then the image is crisp without blurring as there is no longer a scaling issue - obviously it doesnt take up the whole window anymore and its pretty small depending on your screen size… I can scale the window larger (drag edges with the mouse) which keeps the quality but increases the window size (i.e. no longer just whatever you set it too).

I dont think there is any FIX to this issue beyond using a windowed mode to play…

I completely understand that using a lower resolution would make the game blurry, i mean you trade off quality for performance. But generally that doesn’t apply to the game UI and Text.
For example in POE i generally tick the dynamic resolution option and at times the game looks like just a bunch of pixels but the UI and text is still always clear. That is my experience with most games. This is the first time i am seeing it being implemented like this.
If there is no fix i will just play in windowed mode

I suppose it all depends on how the game engine implements components like this - i.e. UI vs game window itself and how it interacts with resolutions… From what I gather doing some googling, it seems like Unity games have a blurring issue on smaller resolutions when not specifically designed to support them - perhaps its a limitation of the Unity engine that LE uses? Honestly dont know… based on how LE is using a combination of 3d models & 2d raster (pixel) components I have a feeling they may have just made an executive decision early on how to or not to handle this possibility…

PoE by comparison, if I recall correctly, is developed on its own game engine (for better or worse) and maybe they specifically addressed this… Its also a much older game so its likely they planned for it to support lower resolution scaling in a better way? From various trend research online - in 2014 when PoE launched, your screen resolution was considered the most widely used… in 2018 when LE launched this had moved to 1080p on everything except laptops, which are not traditionally for gaming and therefore would not be a target market… and gaming laptops were 1080p. Interestingly because of laptop/smaller screens still chugging along, your resolution is still widely used statistics wise (just not for gaming)…

Its interesting for me at least… both a game engine perspective & screen resolution trends… obviously have no idea how the devs made the decisions that impacted this…
