Black Blade of Chaos buildmaking

I’m currently trying to make a Lethal Mirage Black Blade of Chaos Blade Dancer. I don’t have much experience with rogue. I could use some help tweaking the build and adjusting my current character.

I recently got to lv 72, respecced to use the weapon… and I suddenly went from obliterating things with the leveling build using random crap daggers to tickling things with an ability that I practically had to stand still to use. So clearly the build can use some tweaking, although some of that also probably just comes down to the current state of my gear.

First the theorycrafting:

Here is the planner: https://www.lastepochtools.com/planner/Br1qvMkQ

The gear is really fuzzy outside of the weapon. Don’t read too much into it. I figure there are a bunch of different defensive packages I could use. Not sure on whether to go for the glancing blows instead of dodge. Going to presumably be stacking a lot of dex, so maybe the dodge to glancing blow is just wasting some of that dodge rating.

Then there’s stuff like Titan Heart since I’m 2h. Could do low-life to take advantage of Death’s Door. I was maybe thinking Wall of Nothing, Vessel of Strife, and Foot of the Mountain could be an interesting defensive combo with all this dodge. Plus I do some void damage, so the increased void damage on vessel does a bit. Although having to commit some affixes into HP regen seems difficult. Maybe once I get to it, I can use my Null Portents since I could make use of the leech. I even had some weirder considerations like Static Shell and Ocearon since I’m gonna be apply to shock things somewhat easily.

On the offense side of things, I have one big question then general need of advice about the tree: Does attack speed do anything? In the planner it has a line saying that it has no speed scaling. So I didn’t really put anything into it. But it feels so slow to cast it keeps getting me hit by stuff in monos and at the moment I’m not doing good enough damage for that to be remotely ok. I think it might have felt a bit faster when I touched a speed shrine, but honestly it’s hard to tell. Is the lack of attack speed going to make this feel terrible or was I right to avoid it?

For the skill tree, it feels like a skill I could put like 30+ points into it easily. So it’s really hard to pair down what’s important. I feel like getting the extra hits is important for the CDR. The shadow stuff can get me more of those hits from Shadow Eater, although it’s not clear to me when the shadows are getting created/consumed and whether or not that lines up in my favor.

I’m conflicted about Backstab. It seems like getting +12% base crit is really important for damage, but losing 2 hits loses out on some CDR, so idk. It’s felt pretty inconsistent on when the CD will get fully refunded, probably depending on pack size. I imagine against bosses this will be even worse. Tragically, I had a T7 +Melee Crit% on a sword that I tried to slam onto this 2LP weapon and I missed the 50/50. I figure I’m gonna need to farm up another one to try again soon.

There are also those 7 points to make it faster and have a faster CD, but not sure if that’s really gonna help, especially since the CDR is based on kills, so no help on bosses.

I assume the lightning conversion makes sense when the weapon gives all that lightning melee and pen/dex right? Also, do the Sundering Blows and Rive nodes swap to working with Shock when you convert it or no? They don’t say that, but idk.

Then there are just a variety of more damage nodes to take as well as a kill threshold.

There’s also those nodes that give blind/frailty/crit avoid which seem like they’d be nice, but also not sure I’d be happy to run non-crit avoid capped just relying on that.

So what do you think the 20-21 point tree is? What about all the way up to 26 with the T7 and a +2 from the Nihilis I have when I level up enough?

Also, for mana sustain, I’m not really happy having to rely on something like Flurry to get mana back from spamming Lethal Mirage, but maybe investing into other sources of mana regen would be too expensive affix-wise.

Beyond theory crafting, there’s the matter of whether or not I can currently salvage the build for leveling in early empowered monos or if I should go back to the leveling build for now until some time.

Here is the current character: https://www.lastepochtools.com/planner/Bx1WD12o

I’ve got crit avoid cap, glancing blow cap, endurance cap, and a decent amounts of resists, but obviously health, armor, and stun avoid are all pretty crap atm. And with the damage not being there, neither is the leech. So the survival isn’t amazing for how much I end up in danger being melee and needing to stop and cast Lethal Mirage.

My crit chance seems to not be great, so maybe taking points out of All In would make sense atm. Not really sure what the quick fix is here without getting that flat crit LP’d onto the weapon. ASAP.

So idk, do you see any way to fix this for now without major gear changes? Passives/skills?

Hey,
what you are trying to achieve with your build seems really fuzzy to me.
I believe there are pretty much 3 ways to build around this sword.

1 : Going for shadow daggers damage
You also require the penumbra ring to actually proc the debuff…
It autocrits, you can have a LOT of flat damage on the weapon (added with good effectiveness for shadow daggers).
I didn’t try much, but it looks efficient. Bonus style points with a julra with T7 throwing damage ring.
An issue is that you end up doing void, phys and lighting damage, but you should be able to get 400+ corruption. This is where melee build start to falter anyway, due to defenses (going higher requires to not get hit at range, like with a ballista falconer, or a broken interaction like 10k+ ward generation)

2 : Going for lethal mirage damage
It might be what you are trying to achieve?
You need crit chance for mirage, many mirage hits, and optimise the damage of said hits. Unfortunately, I believe the build is too demanding in terms of prefixes to stack crit chance on the gear in addition to what you need (mana, infinite DEX stacking amongst other things).
In general, being efficient with a skill implies that you get the MORE damage multipliers. And there are many.
Maybe you can get some good results, but the gear with require to be close to perfect to get both damage and survavibility.

3 : Going for lethal mirage damage with autocrit.
My recommended setup
That leaves Shift autocrit node (critical opening), that garantees the next attack is a crit.
ways to optimise damage :

  1. you need to find a way to put bleed stacks on the target (mirage Sundering blows node, MORE damage), since mirage is converted to lighting and will not apply it
  2. you also need to find a way to get your shadows before using mirages (umbral feast node, MORE damage per shadow). Could be synch strike, or smoke bomb.

Having shadow cascade in your build will actually consume the shadows, and you lose a lot of damage.

As far as I’m concerned, I went with puncture for the bleed
smoke bomb for the shadow generation.
here’s my profile https://www.lastepochtools.com/profile/temawye/character/LEbladedancer
you can look for hachadino on LE tools too, he’s got a build that will do more damage, with less survival.

Personnal remarks, if you choose to go with this setup !

  1. I cruise in 300 corruption without watching the screen, both monos and bosses. 375 is I guess the normal value of the build. I can play up to 450, for higher i need more defenses. I really believe that I got a sweet spot between offense and defense currently.
  2. I started converting mirage into lighting once I got a flat lightning roll on the weapon. Prior to this point, damage difference was negligible, and it was much easier to get bleed stacks ! I used a crappy blade until that point (with 99% crit avoidance as nemesis upgrade)
  3. you’ll never get a good roll on nihilis  try to get a more realistic goal !
  4. Just got the new relic, worth about 200 Million for the 3LP and exalted. I killed all harbringers with a gambit relic with +1 mirage, it still worked very well. Rest of the gear I got for about 40 millions (chest with a nemesis upgrade, sniped an insane amulet for 4M, bought 7 swords to get my roll, spent a lot of time to get cheap double exalted on the market place)
  5. I dabbled with cinder strike to get oil stacks and increased lighning damage, definitely a bad idea.
  6. Synchonised strike will cost a lot more mana than smoke bomb, plan mana and mana regen accordingly
  7. With better items (defense wise) elsewhere, you can fit a julra ring with dex in my build. I don’t need leech (chest already provides, you can also go for a titant heart if you can afford a 2LP and get a leech helmet) but the rings are needed for defenses currently. a T6 dex means 13x3 dex after shifting, so always active for the next mirage. it’s insane offensive value.
  8. Many nodes buff mirage, including NOT in it’s tree. Shift is HUGE (crit and multipliers). Also passives, with coated blades (multiplier) and flow (crit multi and inceased damage).
  9. You need to understand the pattern for optimal flow usage, because evade is considered a skill and will break your flow. smoke bomb > puncture > shift > mirage is great, inserting an evade or another skill inside this ‘‘rotation’’ will proc flow on shift instead.

Yeah the main focus was going to be Lethal Mirage Damage. I did end up doing some googling and I found the other build you were talking about. I’ve been trying it at the moment. Lots of damage but man it’s really clunky between needing to play around flow and the big mana costs. I’d be kind of curious to see if your smoke bomb variant feels better. Still got to work around flow, but at least smoke bomb costs less and doesn’t move you around. How does it end up working out with the smoke bomb shadow spawning only once a second? Do you have to wait a bit to finish the combo or do you still just use them in order as soon as you can?

clearing trash:
puncture for mana, smoke bomb for survavibility (garanteed evade before jumping on a pack)
combo is just shift > mirage (and you ignore flow).

Big mobs in monos:
Smoke bomb / puncture (order doesn’t matter), get bleed stacks and probably 2 shadows (2 hits i’ds say),
combo is still Shift > mirage (and you still ingore flow).

Nemesis / mages :
pre cast smoke bomb, interact with shrine, then
puncture x3 (rapid strikes should be active, that’s very fast) > shift > mirage (that will proc flow).

Bosses with adds , like the necrotic dragon
Just like big mobs in monos. Most of the mirages will be on adds anyways, you just want to maximise uptime.

Other bosses :
my rotating blades actually keep the bleeds in place.
I usually smoke bomb in a safe spot, stack flat damage (while staying in smoke) and wait for shadows, then run into boss, puncture > shift > mirage (giving me the flow buff).
then I will use puncture to rebuild my mana and bleed buff.
on lower difficulties, i could stand close to the bosses and not fear of dying. In that case, I treated it like big mono mobs.

So just to clarify, the gameplay is:

Clearing: Smoke Bomb → 1 Puncture → Shift right away → Lethal Mirage

Single Target: Smoke Bomb → Puncture (s?) → Wait a sec or so → Shift → Lethal Mirage

Did I understand that right?

woops, edited previous message, anwer is above !

a small video is better than words I guess. I think it was 467 corruption.

Didn’t end well, but as I said, I would go too much above 400 corruption with a melee build not abusing a specific defensive mechanic. Some monster abilities seemed to not be cast out, especially on lagon, but maybe it’s because I was recording at the same time and created lags.

i stopped at 850 corruption, normal echo are fine, but lord of ring keep one shotting me

This is what I threw together as a Bleed build. Didn’t make much sense to convert Lethal Mirage imo, so I moved some points around. Dancing strikes once or twice to get the +60% damage to your next lethal mirage in 4s and setup arena for damage, damage reduction, and global bleed. Then just shift and lethal mirage.

I’m not sold on anything and it’s untested, so Temawye’s build is probably better.

Edit: the link would help… https://www.lastepochtools.com/planner/BG2G4Z2Q

Interesting idea, but you can’t use Dancing Strike with a 2H Sword.

I completely forgot about that (I’m sure I’ve used sword+shield with it though, but I must be remembering wrong). Hold please!

Edit: Puncture really seems to be the best alternative then. Flurry is a very good skill but doesn’t have the bleed potential of Puncture (or dancing strikes) built into its tree.

But Flurry is ridiculously fast, so you may not get as high individual damage per stack but you should get more stacks.

I didn’t test nor think about it at all, but that’s actually a great idea to build around!, I have some spare money and was about to stop the season here… I’ll try to cook something out.
Puncture is this case will be better cause the bleed chance transfers into mirage.

True, but I’m assuming Bloodthirst in Puncture is global bleed chance (+180% at 3 stacks) and with Mirage applying bleed at +50% chance itself that would be +230% bleed chance, applying 2-3 bleeds per hit, doing more damage each hit.

And if you do it after Shift it’s +380% bleed chance (before other sources of bleed) for 3-4 bleeds per hit.

I literally threw it together in like 15-20 minutes and it’s based on assumptions so someone else can probably make it better.

Leveling my Bladedancer now since I dropped the BBC (black blade of chaos) and this is my end game planner for it: https://www.lastepochtools.com/planner/BZmZy51Q

Flurry for mana sustain, Synch Strike and Shift for the max shadows of 5, Shurikens for armor and reliable shock source and I’m stacking shadows and mirages for damage/multiple massive hits that all crit (if I do this properly)

My 100% source of crit is consuming the Bladedancer passive buff of Flow with Lethal Mirage as the 5th skill which can only be consumed by unique abilities so I’m hoping it doesn’t feel awful to play and as long as I’m monitoring my stacks and rotation the Lethal Mirage will truck.

I also found out that Evade counts as a unique skill for Flow so single target will require a set rotation for maximum damage but once I have that down I think it will feel very rewarding!

I was also genuinely surprised with how tanky you can build this. I have my work cut out for me as far as slams go to achieve what I have planned but I already have the red rings, Titan heart and crit multi BBC.

Hopefully you can get any amount of inspiration from my planner (I’m still learning fully) and in tandem, the brilliant folks that are more mechanically inclined can tell me if I made dire errors here :joy:

Isn’t this +100% increased crit only? Never tried to be honest, but the wording implies that it’s just a crit increase, not added crit chance.

It’s a single attack that requires 4 unique skills before actually applying to the 5th skill, that’s a ton of passive point investment and setup for it to be 100% increased lmao I’ll be a bit upset.

As far as I know increased will always say increased right? I’ve seen Flow utilized in other crit builds as well but I haven’t directly tested myself yet either, my bladedancer should be in monos today and I’ll report back!

Worst case I’ll just use the Shift tree guaranteed crit

That depends on how it’s phrased.
For example, Peak of the Mountain says “(240% to 290%) increased Critical Strike Chance”. This will apply to your base crit chance (usually 5% without any other modifier).
Prismatic Gaze, on the other hand, has 2 affixes where one says “+(2% to 4%) Critical Strike Chance” and the other “40% increased Critical Strike Chance”. In this case, the first affix will add to your base crit chance (upping it to 7-9%) and the second one will then apply to the new value.

So the general rule is that if it says “increased” then it will multiply (additive with other similar affixes) to the base chance, if not it will add to your base chance. Which is why Gambler’s Fallacy is a guaranteed crit after 4s.

Thanks for the knowledge bomb, I love it! So it’s not a hard and fast rule but good rule of thumb and honestly up to EHG to shore up any confusion. The tooltip for Flow and the Pulse node in particular is a bit confusing, I will admit but to me and based on Gambler’s Fallacy as well, it’s a guaranteed crit:

Flow is consumed when you use a 5th unique skill, rather than a 4th but the skill that consumed Flow has a much higher critical strike chance and bleed chance.

Crit Chance when consuming Flow: +100%
Bleed Chance when consuming Flow: +100%
Unique Skills required to consume Flow: 5

That means it will guarantee a crit. Otherwise it would say “Increased Critical Strike Chance when consuming Flow”. The way it’s stated, it will add +100% to your base 5% chance, so it’s over 100% and it’s a guaranteed crit. Same for Bleed chance.
