my main gripe with Last Epoch is the detection of zone change/zone loading. It seems to take 3-5 seconds to register where I am not sure if i have actually entered the zone load or not. this feels very frustrating.
also, i wish the boundaries for zone change portals were more clearly outlined. multiple times i have accidentally ran back to the zone i came from.
Welcome to the game and the forum!
Yeah, they are aware of the issue and last I remember they are working on it. Hopefully with 1.0 it will improve.
Yeah, I 100% agree with this and it’s one of my biggest gripes with the game, too.
Yeah I agree, Lets hope 1.0 makes the loading times much better since they are aware of it. Even after 1.0, I would be okay with it being reduced.
I expect server performance will be something the devs will keep looking into for years. It can always be improved. And it will also depend a lot on how many players join. GGG was caught flat-footed lots of times at league launch with terrible load times and constant disconnects. Even Blizzard did with D4 and they have more than enough money to dump on servers.
For the record, D4 didn’t, and was universally praised in gaming publications for being the one and only game in recent memory to manage a smooth launch.
But the point is valid, even if the example is not, as pretty much every other big launch, like D3, New World, Lost Ark, ran into server issues (that’s why D4 was praised).
One big difference in LE, though, compared to all these games: it is not a real launch, the game has been available to buy and play for a very long time. That should make things easier to manage.
On the other hand, the company is much smaller than all the other examples I gave, so yes, I would still expect some struggle at the beginning.
D4 didn’t have huge queues and constant disconnects, but the launch wasn’t that smooth. There was constant rubberbanding in the first few days and sometimes you couldn’t even switch zones entirely because the toon would just keep bumping into the invisible barrier, like trying to enter the church in the first main city or leaving it via northeast.
So it was smooth if you compare to the clusterf*** of other games, but not without issues.
Even PoE had occasional issues with season launches. I remember that Heist’s first week was horrible, with huge queues and constant disconnects (plus the whole thing where they let streamers skip the queue). And this was years after PoE was firmly established.
The problem that should be expected at launch, in my experience, is having a higher player load than expected, which is what happened in PoE with Heist league and a few others. Possibly some bugs as well, but I expect the most severe ones to be squashed promptly.
LE is gaining some hype and it’s not easy to calculate how many players will join at launch. EHG does have an advantage PoE doesn’t, which is that they know how many copies were sold, but it’s quite likely that there will be an increase in sales in the days surrounding the launch, especially if they get good reviews.
Absolutely.
Which means having to put out resources you won’t need anymore after the first few days.
Personally I don’t plan to play before early March at the earliest, to avoid the rush. But I will probably check these forums first to see how things are going.
Which, I believe, is why one would rent the servers rather than buy.
If the loading screens are like in the test phases or right now on live LE is instantly uninstalled untill this works faster… or maybe not? I have nothing better to do late february ^^. i still would hate it a lot.
And that’s why I am a bookseller, and not an accountant.
(Might also explain why I am usually broke.)
Just adding (as my first post) to the pile, as this is my number 1 gripe with online play.
It also discourages me from playing HC, so hopefully this is addressed as soon as possible (by 1.0 perhaps? One can hope!)
If they have a pile of netcode to work through as the baseline issue, forcing a load screen as soon as you trigger the zone/portal/whatever and putting the player in an invincible state would do the trick for me. I’d not mind looking at the loading screen for 10-ish seconds longer if I knew my character is safe and I’m travelling to the area I wanted to when I clicked.
