I like WASD-games, like Killsquad, Pagan Online, etc. But Last Epoch is not a game like that. So changing a control scheme seems like a waste of precious dev time to me, plus additional maintenance for testing with such a control scheme each time. Should this game ever make their way to console, it might be implemented.
Im agree that LE doesn’t need significant changes of mechanic, it already has good setup and i like it. But still, just adding movement and absolutely nothing more wouldnt ruin anything. Its just kind of silly that when you kiting enemy (run away and deal damage while he chasing you), you have to move your mouse to one side of screen for moving, then to opposite side for making quick attack, then again. I used do this in moba-games and dont really mind, but its so-so much of unnesessary mouse movements. Gameplay would more relaxing without that.
In moba genre its usually necessary, because people need to move screen over map and view whats happening there while your hero is moving, so they have to kite this way. But here its nothing like that, screen always centered on hero anyway.
Just movement - yes, nothing terrible happens here, I agree. And so as we know that LE will be playable with gamepads, movement with WASD - is not a big deal.
But WASD is often / mostly taken as an ability to strafe and moving backward and even making some actions at the same time. And THIS would be a radical change for LE.
I’d say we have to split this Topic into two Parts either way. First can / should it implemented or better say is it a dealbreaker if they do. Second: Does Last Epoch (or ARPG’s in General) profit from?
About the 1.
I don’t really see a issue if they implement it. Direct Controls can help certain People to enjoy / play it better and don’t feel as clunky to them as Point & Click, as long as it is Optional it really doesn’t bother me.
About the 2:
I’d argue it matters. In general i would disagree with people above claiming WSAD for an ARPG doesn’t fit, because that’s not true at all, there are quite some ARPGs, look at Bastion example, which works absolutely perfectly with WSAD and even truly profit from it. The Thing is however, and that’s the Point about such Examples, the Game itself must be build from the beginning with WSAD Controls in mind, means also how Combat works. Like direct Mouse-Controlls for Attack where you use Leftclick for your Basic Attacks / Main-Skills & Spells, and also not working with a Targeting System like Point & Click Controls do, but direct combat. And maybe adding some Mechanics like Dodging. And that’s where i’d say this wouldn’t be the case for Last Epoch. It would be a nice gimmick, that’s for sure, but LE wouldn’t truly profit from it or have an huge impact by it, except they would overhaul the complete Combat and stuff. And i don’t see that happen especially if stuff like Dodging added for Combat (and not only as a mere gimmick like Wolcen) than it feels clunky with Point & Click Controls…
So to sum my Point up, to generalize ARPG’s / Hack’N’Slay doesn’t fit with WSAD Controls is absolutely nonnsense… but for ARPG’s / HnS like LE which aren’t build on that the game doesn’t profit that much and is more a Gimmick to play it in a different way. I don’t mind for it being added… but i don’t need it neccessary either.
Like i said before, nothing forcing devs to go futher than just adding WASD, if they would decide to implement this. And profit from it is maybe 50% decreased mouse movement. In this case you can just point cursor at enemy and keep there like all combat, until you want to blink or switch target.
Also it could just feel better, though it is matter of taste.
I already have my movement bound to the arrow keys. I have my skills on the numpad next to them, and I just use my touchpad to move the camera. I hate using a mouse while gaming, and I’m a lefty, so this configuration works much better for me.
I can strafe and move easily. Precision aiming requires…practice, but with a half hour it’s really fine. Best of all, no annoying clicking across the screen to move. I just set the cursor in a spot on the screen and my character will move there just by holding the up key. It’s much easier on my hands and wrists.
I’d suggest anyone who’s concerned about WASD to give it a try. Personally I don’t find there to be any issue with this set up, but like I said I really don’t like using the mouse.
What i really want is the option (check box in settings) that wherever you click for movement that your character will go to even if interrupted by casting a skill
I.e. your a kite build and you click across screen your character starts moving and then you aim your mouse back at the enemy (but you dont click) and you fire marrow shards. Now your character has stopped and you need to click the other side again to keep running. I would rather after marrow shards has completed its cast that your character continues to where you had clicked. The only options for stopping the character from reaching that point would be clicking a new point to move to (overrides the previous click obviously) or don’t check the box in settings and you just keep movement as it is now.
There is a big difference between 4 axis and a stick when it comes to movement ^^. Outside of this the classic Hack and Slay is no twinstick shooter from my point of view but that’s a whole different topic.
