Why is this not an obvious upgrade?

Staff 1 is my current staff and i came across this staff Staff 2. The 2nd one seems very cut and dry better, but the tool tip of my necrotic skills (Soul Feast, Drain Life, Spirit Plague, and Hungering Souls) all say its a downgrade. I heard that DOT skills sometimes have wrong tool tips, so I tried my skills on the target dummy and Staff 2 does do a little less damage, but why? It has more damage over time and more necrotic damage. I lose 25 adaptive spell damage, but that cant be worth more than 48% more damage over time and 111% more necrotic damage, can it?

The adaptive spell damage on the second staff is significantly lower (equivalent to a 29% less damage modifier) which is nearly 1/3 less! While the other staff does have a much higher total % increased damage, all % increased damage is added together then applied, so the ā€œrealā€ change in your % increased will be significantly less.

While we’re waiting for the devs to update the character screen, why don’t you upload your character to the build planner so you can see what your actual total % increased damage is.

Edit: Additionally, Soul Feast has an added damage effectiveness (a multiplier to any flat damage you have) of 160%, Drain Life has one of 360% & Hungering Souls one of 45% for the hit & 75% for the DoT. So the lower flat damage on the second staff will have a much larger effect on Drain Life’s DPS than Soul Feast or Hungering Souls.

Here is a link to the build planner

Your total % increased necrotic spell damage increases from ~599% to ~731% (~22% more) but your total flat spell damage reduces from 16+86 = 102 to 77 (~25% less). The changes are fairly close (25% down v 22% up) hence you don’t see a massive reduction when you swap to the moon staff.

Also, there’s an upload button which will give you the actual figures & not require manually adding the items.etc,
