Why are damage values random (mechanically)?

I don’t understand what is causing my damage values to be random. That is, I hit the target dummy with a basic attack, and every time it shows a different damage number. None of my passives are causing this. The damage for skills in this game is a fixed value. So it is for added damage modifiers, too. Everything is deterministic (except for when it says random chance, like bleed chance, etc). So why the randomness I see? Thank you!

All non-DoT damage has a +/- 25% variance applied after it’s been calculated.

As Lama pointed out, there is this +/- 25% variance.

This does make combat a little bit less predictable and this does improve feel of combat a lot actually.
Enemies have the same variance, so incoming hits and your own hits are never the same, so you need different amounts of hits for certain enemy types and certain enemy abilities sometimes cause you do loe 50% of your HP and sometimes 60% or 40%.

This in conjunction with enemy magic and rare monster having affixes makes combat a lot more engaging.

Thanks, guys! I do agree with you, Heavy, that this is for the best. Would be nice if this info was in the in-game guide, because I feel this is something a lot of new players will wonder about.

Maybe something @AndrewTilley might want to add to the community game guide.
