They’re pretty good. You might want to check An Autumn For Crippled Children as well. And probably Panopticon.
I will definitely do that!
Oh wow, didn’t expect a detailed response on every band I listed, I love it!
VEXED
Try This Is Not The End (maybe with video if you want to cry :P), beautiful cleans on this one and the hrash vocals are emotionally loaded.
Kanonenfieber
Haha nice, it is noteworthy that this is a 1-man project and all of of lyrics and themes are based on real things or at least some “myths” that are somewhat based on true happenings in the past. Everything is WW1 related as well. (He has a friend that has access to a huge amount of historical text, like letters, newspapers and Battle Reports etc). Also this project is meant as a memorial for war and how bad war is, for everybody involved. Forst example the key art in the 2nd physical album has written down this, I quote: “This album is dedicated to the victims if the first World War, so they are not forgotten. May their fates be a warning for all following generations even after more than 100 years”
This project has very cruel and grim lyrics, because that is how war is. Nothing glorifying at all in this project.
Only deaths succeeds in war
BRAT
It seems like you don’t like harsh vocals specifically most of the time, but do liek the instrumentals a lot for ome of these bands? (Try Human Offense or Rope Drag, both from the same album they are a lot more driving and groovy)
Hamferð: Don’t wanna be that guy, but technically they are not “norse”. They are from the Faroe Islands, which are very far west into the Atlantic Ocean bewteen Scandinavia and Island. They sing in they loocal native language Faroese, which is one of the fewest spoken languages in the world (if you exclude local tribe languages etc). The Singer is also in another band called Iotunn, which I personally like way less than Hamferð. Which song did you try? I would recommend listening to Evst or Frostharv for some of their most “epic” songs.
DRAIN
Well yeah Feel the Pressure is from their first album, which was a lot more raw and not so highly produced. I woudl suggest some things from their latest album Living Proof, for a much more refined sound (the band is pretty new, they only did a few years of touring with EP’s before having a full album.
Try Living Proof or Watch You Burn.
They are a band pretty much rooted in Harcore with a large metal twist, similar to BRAT. They isntrumentals are supposed to be very “easy 3, 4 note riffs”. These are the type of bands that are amazing live, because they bring so much freakin’ energy to the table and people going batshit crazy. (Hardcore is very much the ideal genre for stage diving, jumping on the stage midsong and do stage diving).
Also if you want some melodic stuff, they have a cover of Good Good Things from The Descendants on their latest album, pure cleans on that one.
Poppy
For Poppy I guess you kinda need to listen to a few songs to get a idea of what the is about anyway, because every song is like a surprise egg with her.
The Poppy songs I only listen to, are the ones witch heavy instrumentation. My favorites are Bite Your Teeth, X or Concrete. Her most latest song with heavy influences is “they’re all around us”
Wednesday 13’s Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13:
This band also brings a lot of favriote to the tablem but I agree that Wednesday 13 himself is very good as well, I just don’t like his more modern stuff, his old albums are fire though.
Try Your Mother […] […] in Hell or Rambo from Dragqueens, both songs are amazing.
Not sure how much interest youhave in mor recommendations, still feels weird to talk about my music so specifically on a non-music related forum
But I could talk so much about music, it is my absolute most important thing in the world for me and video games are merely secondary for me.
If you want more recommendation here are som including some songs this time:
Entheoes (Experimental Technical Death Metal, they are pretty unique, since they songs do not have choruses and all songs on their albums fade perfectly into the next track on each album): So let me suggest two songs which are in conssecutive succession in their latest full length album: Darkest Day → Clarity in Waves
A few more more melodic suggestions with clean vocals withour harsh vocals:
Dream Evil → The Chosen Ones; Evilized, Children of the Night
Face To Face → A Miss is as Good as a Mile, Disconnected, The New Way
Booze & Glory → Simple, Live It Up, The Time Is Now
More harsh vocals (included):
Dr. Living Dead! (One of my all time favorite bands, unfortunately they disbanded a few years ago, which makes me feel even more proud of my Tattoo that is heaviyl inspired by them) → Gremlins Night, World War Nine, Survival Denied, TEAMxDEADx
Svalbard (amazing emotionally loaded band with very "direct lyrics, not a whole lot of metaphors and jsut straight to the point and in your face meanings/lyrics, also very social critical) → November, Silent Restraint, What Was She Wearing?
Lich King → Act of War, Combat Mosh, Lich King V: Stalemate
Nekrogoblikon → Going to Die, This Is It (a “radio hit” :D, watch the music video), Dragons
I could endlessly go on but I guess I’ll stop here for now, if you want to talk about music feel free to dm me or add me on Discord: heavy_737
I’ll have to give that one a shot!
That’s amazing and so admirable!
I’m definitely particular with my harsh vocals and prefer a good balance between harsh and clean. Examples for me would be Jester by Villain of the Story or Six Feet Under by Silent Theory. I’ll give those other songs a listen!
Absolutely be “that guy” with me. I’m always interested in learning more especially about other languages and cultures! I listened to Ábaer, I’ll listen to those other ones too.
I figured it was a “old stuff” vs “new stuff” which is a problem with how YTMusic handles their top songs. Silent Theory is one of my favorite bands and their first album is awful imo lol, very “sex drugs and rock and roll” lyrics. But their new singer and songwriter for albums 2+ is amazing. I’ll give their new stuff a listen.
Definitely liked what I’ve heard! She’s super unique and her voice is great.
Isn’t it always disappointing when a band/artist gets worse over time (in our opinion)?
Yeah, music is super important to me too, and I’ve learned over the years that lyrics are super important to me too and, maybe because I’m aphantasic, music is my strongest memory and emotional trigger. There’s a few songs that I have a hard time listening to because they meant so much to me when I was going through a tragedy and it brings back that raw emotion and how I was feeling and processing it at the time. (songs in question are I Am A Stone by Demon Hunter, specifically the chorus and how I was burying my emotions to be strong for others. And Paper Heart by Dayseeker for the actual emotions I was burying. Edit: these two songs also play off each other’s chorus lol. “I am a stone, unaffected. Rain hell down unto me.” followed by “I’m not made of stone, and I’m not a machine. The weight of the world is too much for me hold, my paper heart will fold.”)
I’m always down for more recommendations though! And yeah, it’s odd when it’s not a music forum, yay for off-topic sections!
Now for the real question, what does EHG listen to while working on the game?
That’s an eclectic list there. I listen to a lot of music on the internet and I think I’ve actually listened to maybe three of those bands.
How do you feel about Dalriada? (Formerly Echo of Dalriada.) Hungarian band I’m a big fan of. Their stuff is rad.
You might enjoy Blood Stain Child or Merging Moon, check them out also.
Since we already talked about the post-stuff before, you should try out The Elijah. They only have one album, it’s a sort of post-hardcore, post-metal stuff with both clean and harsh/screamo voices. They only have one album (and then the same album, but live) but I really liked it.
I am as well and music is also extremely important to me. Though I’ve since found a way to sort of disengage songs from specific bad memories (because I love the songs and want to keep listening to them). Or maybe those memories just fade over time (or their impact, at least) and it becomes tolerable to listen to again.
In this we are different though. Not that lyrics aren’t important, because they are. I love bands with good lyrics, like Pink Floyd, Marillion (Fish era), Supertramp or Anathema (especially the later Prog Rock phase) to name just a few.
But to me lyrics become secondary to the melody. I can easily listen to good music with bad lyrics, but I will hardly listen to bad music (to my tastes) with good lyrics.
They are not unimportant, but they are definitely secondary to the music itself.
Let’s go down the goth hole (phrasing, no kink shaming) then. I did start DJing at a Goth/Industrial/Metal club, and the first non-metal genre I started diving into was goth, so I do know quite a few. As long as you’re enjoying them:
The Bolshoi, Children On Stun, Clan Of Xymox (and Xymox, an offshoot), Corpus Delicti, The Crüxshadows, Dronning Maud Land, Girls Under Glass, Love And Rockets, Suspiria, Switchblade Symphony, Two Witches, Xmal Deutschland.
I actually refrained from the more strange recommendations. I do listen to some weird stuff
They didn’t sound familiar, but when I listened I’m pretty sure I’ve heard them before.
You should listen to Cruachan, based on this band, I’m sure they’re right up your alley.
Check Korpiklaani, Trollfest and maybe Primordial as well.
Checked them out. First ones reminded me of Children of Bodom. Either way, I added them all to my “to get” list
Yeah, melody is the most important for me. I have many instrumental playlists that specifically don’t contain lyrics. Lyrics distract me when I have conversations via discord or when I work.
Moreover, I listen to songs in languages I don’t understand, and most of the time, I don’t bother to look up what it says. French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese - I just like how those languages sound in songs.
I am that way as well. I have a bunch of nordic bands singing in their own language, icelandic, german (and not just Rammstein ), italian, japanese, all over the world, really. As long as the music is good, I’m good.
Ever heard ASP? They have a nice range of music and went through quite an evolution. Almost like a (black) butterfly
Wasn’t it on the list? There are so many that I skip over a bunch and try to focus on some of the main ones and stuff in different genres.
Anyway, yes, I know ASP
On a slightly different genre, you should listen to She Wants Revenge. It’s kinda like Indie Rock with The Cure and Depeche Mode influences. One of my favorites.
And also on a slight tangent from this (maybe halfway between goth and SWR), Motorama and The Exploding Boy.
Listening to it now. The fact they only have one album reminded me of a band I learned about from Borderlands 3 called Blind the Huntsmen. They have one album, White Eyes, that’s kind of a companion piece to a short novel they wrote about a blind girl who saves humanity. It’s a legitimately great album and one of the few albums where I’ll listen to the whole album in one sitting.
Woah! You’re the only other person I’ve met that’s aphantasic. Everyone else I describe it to is blown away that it’s even a thing lol.
I can understand that. Lyrics definitely aren’t everything to me as there’s plenty of lyrically great songs that just don’t do it for me, but there’s also plenty of melodically great songs that just don’t do it for me because the lyrics/vocals are terrible haha. Like Slipknot/Stone Sour, I LOVE them melodically, but very few of their songs resonate with me lyrically, if that makes sense?
edit: since the first song from The Elijah finished as I was typing this. They’re definitely in my strike zone musically. Thanks for the recommendation!
I do the same but sometimes I actually like to look up and learn some of the lyrics. The older I get the more fascinating other languages become to me. Been learning a little bit of many of them recently because of music on Youtube.
On the topic of Japanese in particular, something about it really speaks to me. I know the current iteration is fairly modern but it sounds ancient and witty to me, and can be super masculine also. I really enjoy the way they say things.
You were right, by the way! I really enjoyed Korpiklaani and Primordial. Nothing wrong with the other two, those are just the two I thought had the most interesting songs. Thanks for the recommendations!
Meanwhile, in Quebec (CA), we have rap about recycling bin, about political repression during summits and events like G20 reunions, and some klezmer rap about the duty of memory (sampling Theo Bikel).
Anyway, while playing ARPGs, I often go for OSTs and music without lyrics. My favorites OSTs are : Into the Breach, Rogue Prince of Persia, Offworld Trade Company, a bunch of Lofi remix of popular games (BG3, Diablo, etc.). The only exception is when I’m kinda drunk and funky, I go for the 2 excellent new albums of the french electroswing group, Caravan Palace. I’ve died many many times to Julra while listening (and yelling and dancing) to these songs, especially the fourth one (Raccoons).
Good list, I need to check some of these out.
Have you ever listened to the Ogre Battle 64 OST? It’s more of a catalogue of music from the game; it’s not designed to be listened straight through. But there’s some really compelling tracks on there. I often listen to the battle theme “Decisive Battle” on loop when I’m gaming.
If you do give this a listen, one thing worth noticing is that disc 2 and 3 are the full definition version of the tracks before they were digitized for the N64.

I know I mentioned it above, but the Anno 2205 and 1800 soundtracks by Dynamedion are absolutely fantastic. 2205 is better, imo, but I’m sure that’s mainly because I like that game more lol
So I went and listened to more Kanonfieber with some translated lyrics by PinkPanzer (excellent name) and I found myself getting choked up with Waffenbrüder and Der Füssilier. I felt like that meme of the guy sweating with two buttons to choose from and my buttons were “headbang” and “cry”
Haha nice.
I feel like translated lyrics might not do it justice sometimes, because the writing is excellent on a lot of tracks. The vocabulary used and general structure is very poetic and uses vocabulary from the time it is about (WW1 in this case, so 1914-1918)
But I am glad you enjoy it!
My favorite Track from the frist album is “Der letzte Flug” and from the latest album it is a tie between “Sturmtrupp” and “Ausblutungsschlacht”
Absolutely. That’s the downside of translations, but my 2 semesters of German over 13 years ago isn’t much help lol.
