I listen to a lot of stuff. I have Youtube perks so I don’t have any ads. Enjoy listening to Streamers like it’s talk radio back in the day when ppl listened to radios, hehe. So much music also. Synthwave is great background noise. I got to a point where I’ve heard all the music I like so much that I need new things so there’s no lack of stuff out there on the interwebs.
Dark Haven and Dark Lady’s Chosen are great books as well, but make a supporting character from the first two books the new main character. So it’s a new story, same universe is how I saw it. Definitely worth reading though since that character was very interesting.
Edit: Dragonlance sounds so familiar, I must have read one from a school library at some point.
I don’t know how well they would hold up if I re-read them today, but I liked Fred Saberhagen’s Book of Swords and The Princes of Amber by Roger Zelasny a lot as a teen.
I just use the AI thing for spotify that recommends songs and plays what I like. Only annoying bit is when they hit me with the “top hits” for the moment and I gotta skip through them manually.
It’s so odd how the recommendations are sometimes great and often not.
I use YouTube music and I used to use their Mixed which would make playlists based on different bands you listen to or the Super Mix that was a mix of everything you listen to and recommendations. I’d have to skip like 15 songs because they were just awful and not even close to what I like.
But on the flip side, I found some of my favorite bands from those recommendations off of bands I kind of liked.
Right, it can’t be all based on what people listen to or it would be more accurate more of the time. Pandora gets it right way more than Youtube does if you just want a general list of songs within a genre to play. There has to be some kind of monetization or licensing angle that interferes with the order and repetition they can play certain things (due to them being videos) that Pandora somehow doesn’t rely on or run afoul of as often.
Can give you some insight as I make YT videos. The answer is some what complex.
YT has a invisible counter that tracks based on how active or none active during sessions- in this period usually every hour or so, our attention kind of focuses out and focuses back in. Where we are less focused on music but with work. We don’t consciously focus on the playlist (similar idea with hypnosis, is that mind still remembers the data even when your not focused).
This period in the middle is when Yt will occasionally toss things for you that you less likely to want (sometimes because the songs are promoted, sometimes because Yt changed songs to experiment.). Now by nature of how our brains work, we tend to zone back in when we hear a song we really like or really dislike.
So your noticing this zoning in more then you otherwise would. Essentially similar to confirmation bias. Now YT will learn your patterns and try to push around 30-40 min if it notices your patterns don’t notice. Each song is usually 2-3 min. Why seeing 15 songs like that is possible.
Your being algorithm-Ed. Same reason YT will sub you to channels you watch a lot even if you don’t subscribe and mute notifications from subbed channels.
I often just select a multi-hour compilation video.
I find that last.fm recommendations are usually much more reliable. I’ve often went “last.fm surfing”, where I would check the “Related Artists”, listen to them, then check theirs as well, on and on until I got tired.
Found lots of awesome bands that way.
I only listen to music (no podcasts or videos or alike) while gaming, unless it is a game that works with sound cues for mechanic (like Remnant 2).
My music taste very diverse, but stays within Metal and Punk for the most part.
From more “mainstream” ones like Suicidal Tendencies, Rancid, Megadeth, Billy Talent, Falling in Reverse, Sleep Token, NOFX over more “up and coming/underground” ones like Vexed, Unleash the Archers, Kanonenfieber, Brat, Hamferd, Drain to more obscure things like Poppy or Wednesday 13’s Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13.
But yeah way too many awesome bands to list here. All the music I own I also own as physical LP’s or CD’s, but I still use music streaming to support artists on top of my physical purchases.
I usually use Bandcamp or YouTube music. Bandcamp is a staple for me and the other changes depending on how the landscape changes. I do not support certain streaming platforms that have atrocious conditions for the artists.
It’s funny because I like one Falling in Reverse song (Watch the World Burn, mainly for the drop) and one Sleep Token song (Rain). I’ve heard a couple Poppy songs, I’ll give your more up and coming and obscure stuff a listen, maybe I’ll find something new to listen to.
Edit:
- VEXED: pretty good, love the lyrics for Anti-Fetish but the vocals just didn’t do it for me. Instrumentals were fire. Kind of remind me of some of the harder Villain of the Story (Karma or Jester)
- Unleash the Archere: (amazing band name) amazing power metal. I can definitely see myself listening to them more.
- Kanonenfieber: German metal/rock is soooo good. Brought me back to my German classes in high school when I would listen to Eisbrecher and Oomph! (this is definitely harder, but sooooo good)
- BRAT: Listened to Hesitation Wound, which didn’t do much for me but the next song, Social Grace, started as I was typing this. Their instrumentals are so good, but the vocals don’t do much for me personally.
- Hamferð: So, the only other “Norse” band I know if is Skäld and this was such a different vibe. Still really good though, unclean vocals are a bit too unclean for me, but the clean vocals are amazing.
- DRAIN: could have just picked a miss for me with Feel the Pressure, but it really didn’t do anything for me vocally or instrumentally.
- Poppy: to be fair, I picked the second “top song”, new way out, on YTMusic because the first featured Bad Omens. Great song though, her vocals and the instrumental are both fantastic (as are most of these on the instrumental side haha)
- Wednesday 13: was not what I was expecting from the cover art. But I really liked this one! Gives me a nostalgic vibe like I’d hear this while playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater or something.
- Wednesday 13’s Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13: so totally thought this was two separate bands in your list. I oddly didn’t like this one as much as the regular Wednesday 13 lol, still good though!
@DJSamhein NOIDZ: this was definitely new! I actually really liked it but I’m ashamed to admit I don’t recognize the language, is it Latin American Spanish? The song I picked was Estranha Forma de Vida. So I’m guessing they may get different singers because the one you linked was just instrumental but also very good lol. Unless two bands have are named Noidz and stylized differently lol
If you want something new you might try out a portuguese band called Noidz. It’s basically Trance Metal. They’re pretty unique and interesting if you want to give them a listen.
You shouldn’t be ashamed not to recognize the language, but you should be ashamed that I said they were portuguese and your first guess was spanish
I totally missed that part of your comment! This is what I get for skimming. They’re good! I like em
And in my defense there’s a French band who sings in old Norse!
That’s fair, but Portugal and Spain have this sort of rivarly coming from historic times, so no portuguese band would sing in spanish or vice versa
They are mostly instrumental, but have some stuff where they get a singer to do some lyrics, sometimes as a cover of another band, like “O Pastor” which is a cover of another portuguese band called Madredeus which does a sort of Folk Fado (Fado is a form of unique portuguese music).
I could probably suggest more portuguese bands but most sing in portuguese and lyrics are an important part of it. Outside of those you might try Moonspell (if you don’t already know them) and Ramp. (as I finished the list I realized there were a bunch of other PT bands).
I can also drop a bunch of bands from several different genres you might want to take a listen. In alphabetical order and not separating by genres at all (so you have most genres in the mix) (warning: long list):

Long list, just a bunch of random stuff. Tried to avoid a bunch of genres, like goth, since no one showed any inclination towards that. Plenty more where that came from. I love listening to music and also sharing it with people.
I can’t promise I’ll get to that whole list. But I’m interested in the goth stuff. I basically listen to everything but rap, I like rap as a musical style just not the lyrics and messages that tend to fill the genre (infidelity, drugs, abuse, etc.)
Edit:
I suppose I can give recommendations too. In no particular order:
- Silent Theory
- Poets of the Fall
- Dayseeker
- Villain of the Story
- Skäld
- Machinae Supremacy
- Ghost/Ghost B.C.
- Hands Like Houses (up to their Anon Album, their new singer isn’t nearly as good)
- Sleeping With Sirens (more specifically, Kellin Quinn lol)
- Nerv
- Point North
- Rain City Drive (formerly called Slaves)
- Sleep Theory
- Fame on Fire
- The Devil Wears Prada
- Caskets
- Written by Wolves
Edit 2:
@DJSamhein I went over your list and I know Amon Amarth, Cage the Elephant, Gojira, and oddly King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (amazing name) because of Randy Feltface. Oh, and Oopmh!, Poweman5000, and Van Canto
The 69 Eyes, Bella Morte, Corpus Delicti, Diva Destruction, Fields Of The Nephilim, Inkubus Sukkubus, London After Midnight, Love Like Blood, Phantom Vision (PT).
It’s ok if you don’t listen to everything, I just thought I’d drop some stuff in case people want to explore it.
As for your list, I already know a few of those, I’ll be sure to look into the rest.
Idk why, but I’m always drawn to bands when they have a fun name, I may end up not liking them but it’s like a book cover and Fields of the Nephelim is such a badass name
You should love post-rock/metal then. They all have weird names (maybe not fun names but definitely strange) like Mouth Of The Architect, Collapse Under The Empire, Explosions In The Sky, If These Trees Could Talk, etc.
They are my favorite Goth band for sure. McCoy has a really deep voice that, to me, is the embodiment of what goth is
They also had a small side project called The Nefilim, which is more Gothic/Industrial metal, only one album, but was interesting.
They were definitely good and Post-rock/metal is definitely in my preferred genre. Or at least they’re all derivatives of each other.
Post-hardcore, Metalcore, and Nu Metal kind of go hand in hand with Post-rock/post-metal and you’re almost right, those band names are weird but they’re still fun!
I saw a band the other day that I meant to give a listen to called Wolves in the Throne Room lol
Edit: left out that Fields of the Nephilim and London after Midnight are really good
Edit 2: I should add that Poets of the Fall have a side project for when they make music for the Alan Wake/Max Payne franchises (and Control) called Old Gods of Asgard. I’m sure you heard about Herald of Darkness at the Game Awards
