It seems completely arbitrary, and as someone who obsesses over the way things are ordered, it’s driving me nuts.
Is it still alphabetical?
Mike confirmed they planned to update it to most recently used at top, but not sure if that happened yet

No, I’m certain it’s not alphabetical, unless I’m using a different alphabet than everyone else.
I’d upload an image as proof, but it’s not allowed.
Thanks for the info, though.
It’s definitely not alphabetical, by class. It used to be that the last character you played was always on top but that’s not the case now. I don’t know what algorithm they use to determine the order of the list.
Images can be posted using sites like imgur and then linked on the forums
It used to be order created with last played at the top.
Probably sorted the same way as keys in stash tabs, by some random internal hash
It’s not a hash but an ID in form of sequential number that is generated when you create a new character. Right now, with the bugged behaviour, the game orders the characters alphabetically/numerically just based on filename that contains the aforementioned ID. So, what you’ll end up seeing is just the order in which you created your characters. Unless you deleted some characters, then new characters first fill the missing/deleted IDs in the sequence.
Yup, that’s what it did pre-0.9 with the offline saves so I’d imagine it’d be the same now, though the most recetnly played isn’t at the top anymore.
But it’s not. I have characters that I created well after my first that are ordered above that first one. The first character I created is the third one listed.
Pre 0.9 it was the same way but the last played was always top of the list. I know Llama said it used to be “order created” and that may have been at one time but since I can remember it wasn’t so it must have changed along the way and hasn’t been that way for a while.
Correct, and that’s why you’re seeing that chaotic order. It seems some changes made to the game messed with the internal IDs. I saw that on my older characters where the IDs didn’t match the numbers in the filenames. But right now, on new characters, it works exactly like I described. The system fills any missing numbers in the sequence. So, if your first character you ever created got the ID 3 in a previous version of the game, then three newly created characters (ID 0, 1 and 2) in v0.9 will take the spot in front/above your first one.
But it’s not actually working that way entirely. A character I just created yesterday is the fifth in the list of twelve. It really seems very random to me as my list has completely no seeming order.
I could understand the order of creation sequence, or something like that, but it just isn’t happening.
EDIT: And I’ve created a couple of characters in the current version 0.9L.
That broke in 0.9. Now it’s only Order Created.
They confirmed it’s “on the list to get fixed” to return to last played on top.
By “Order created” its actually by filename on your PC (or I assume the files are named the same for online mode) where the filename ends in a number. If you delete out a number in the middle, the next char you make takes that number’s spot (pretty sure) making it appear out of order.
I’m unable to reproduce this on my end. I just created multiple new characters, deleted some of them, created even more new ones, etc. The system always picked the first free ID in sequence while the internal ID and filename always matched. Also the order of them appearing in game in the character selection was always consistent. No idea why it’s different for you.
Oh well, let’s just agree that it isn’t working as expected and being confusing sometimes.
Definitely agree there. I can only express how it’s working on my list as I see it. I’m not sure why it’s acting like this but I know they’re working on it.
