What are builds and how do they actually work?

So, i tried googling what are buils in this game andall u got was top 10 builds etc lol. My attention span is bleh and ive been wanting to learb thos for awhile. Idk if i made a post before but my bad if i did.

You said you had left the game and gone back to Diablo 4.

Why are you asking about builds?

Perhaps you should learn to use a spell checker instead?

I didnt leave. Im still playing. Im level 73 void knight.

Tbh you didnt have to reply.

I appreciate your desire to learn, so I’ll try to give you a legitimate answer.

A “build” is, simply put, the combination of Skills, Passives, and Gear. A build doesn’t need to have anything more than the fact that you have skills, have passives, and have gear, but a well crafted build is combining those three aspects in a coherent and synergistic way.

A great example of this is Forge Guard: the Shield Crafter passive gives you a chance to spawn Shields from the Ring of Shields skill when you block, the unique shield Sigeon’s Reprisal gives you a chance to retaliate with Shield Throw on block, and Shield Throw has a node, Aegis, that gives Shield Throw the ability to ricochet off of Allies, which the Shields from Ring of Shields are considered allies.

This creates a synergistic effect that when you block, you have a chance to create an ally that your shield throw, which happens on block, can ricochet off to boost your single target damage output.

This is just a basic example and there’s much more you can build off of for this spec, such as making Shield Bash your main attack with the ability to boost your Shield Throw ricochet count, and buff skills like Sigils of Hope to boost your damage further. Passives that give you effects on block or boosting your block chance, etc.

So that’s what a build is in very basic terms and examples. Crafting a build from scratch is a whole other topic

This is not specific to Last Epoch. In every game that has choices when levelling a character, what you choose is called a “build”.
Because it is just like building something…
Your skills, your passive points, your gear, all the choices you make, are your bricks. Then you try to assemble all these bricks into something that makes sense, where the different elements support each other and work together to create a strong, efficient building.

Building your house with all the windows underground and the entrance door on the third floor without stairs is not going to work very well. Just as building your character with only range spells, and passives that increase only melee attacks, will be weak. Your building materials need to be arranged in the right way, to create a coherent building.
Depending on your foundations (main skill, maybe), you “build” your character in a way that improves the basic frame.

Hope that makes sense.

If you’re looking to follow a build guide, you can check many out on lastepochtools.com, icy-veins.com, or maxroll.gg. Google is great but these three sites are where you will find most of them.

I myself started this game using maxroll.gg guides, I think they are the best when it comes to beginner experience. Specially because they have the links to explain the different mechanics right on their website as well, once you get the gist of the basics you can look for more in depth or advanced guides on youtube and such.
