Weirdddd fps issues in certain instances (high gpu/cpu, low settings)

look maybe i dont have the ‘perfect’ computer

but seriously come the fuck on it’s an i9 running a 2070 RTX, why do i have to set everything low and change away from 4k to even try to get >1 fps when ‘shit hits the fan’ (particle fx mostly)

something is super weird here and it’s specific to certain effects/monsters i’m not surewhat, especially since others with lower CPUs and GPUs have said it’s fine. i can run a lot of other games on more or less top settings with some to no struggle. this is an ARPG i’m not really here for exquisite visuals i shouldn’t have to struggle for basic playability?

Hey… Welcome to the forums…

Please can you post your system information, the in-game settings and player.log files..

ps… I am sure that you are frustrated but if you expect any help here you may want to tone down the expletives - it can be hard to want to help out if someone comes off as agressive in posts…

DxDiag.txt (105.1 KB)
Player.log (29.2 KB)

i don’t have a launcher folder… (it’s launched through steam though so idk)

Hey…

Thanks for more info…

Generally speaking your setup should be getting decent fps at decent settings… However, LE is obviously in beta and has performance optimisation issues so expecting your setup to run in Ultra mode at 4k with decent fps is likely to be a non-starter…

The key here is that its more related to the game state than your hardware and by being conservative with your settings, you can get the game to play very well.

You didnt provide your in-game settings so I cannot confirm things but for example, I run a 1060/i5-7500/16gb/NVME system at very low settings on 1080p I can play the game at 100fps (unstable), 75fps (gpu works hard), 55-60fps (stable & Ok). From other players “stable” configs… 2060 gpus medium/high settings at 1080p with ~100fps… 3080 gpu mostly Medium settings at 4k ~ 100fps…

The game has known FPS killer moments… lots of mobs, lots of minions, lots of skill effects proccing at the same time all over the screen. All of these are directly related to the lack of optimisation in the game right now and are repeatable by virtually every player… the FPS drops just scale based on hardware… i.e. if you are using 3080, you may notice a drop from 120fps to 90fps… for others it could be really bad like a drop from 50fps to 10fps making the game horrible to play… Thankfully these killer moments can be mitigated by changing play style to compensate for now…

I am sure your 1fps is an exaggeration - if its not then there really is something more than weirdly wrong…

From your player.log:

Nothing to concerning… There is a crash report at the end but as you are not complaining about constant crashes I would forget that one for now.

From your dxdiag:

  • your windows could use an update. (please make sure that you are not running KB5001330 and KB5001337 updates from earlier in the year - these mess with fps in lots of games).

  • nvidia drivers are new… make sure they are not version 466.77 (date seems to indicate 471.11 which should be ok). drivers tend to be tricky… sometimes an older driver is more stable - especially on older hardware… if nothing else works you might want to consider something older just as a test.

  • The game is installed on your mechanical drive… obviously this is fine, but LE seriously benefits from a faster drive… it can make a big difference to load times (minutes to seconds difference) obviously this doesnt affect FPS too much as most things are preloaded per map. What is with your drive E:? 0.3gb? (not serious)

  • Diagnostic section at the end… You have LiveKernelEvent 144 - these are not good… and depending on the sub parameters can poing to driver issues or hardware problems. You need to look through your Windows Event logs and find these error and see what devices/dlls they are referring to - there are usually links in the error log messages that point to specific components/files… If its pointing to graphics related issue then I recommend a safe mode reinstall of your GPU drivers (or use something like DDU)… You may also need to check device manager to see if there is any problem with hardware devices and correct them. It could also be useful to run Windows System file checker to make sure that there isnt a messed up windows file…

  • Also from the diagnostic section - you have Windows Update errors… these could indicate failed windows updates - I would check your windows updates to see if any updates failed or were deferred…

  • Also from the diagnostic section related to your GPU… NVDisplay.Container.exe has crashed… this could also be related to something wrong with your GPU drivers…

Things to do:

  • Deal with the errors found above.

  • Safe mode reinstall of gpu drivers. Makes sure that the drivers are set to performance mode defaults.

  • Verify the game files in Steam - very important.

  • As a test, make sure not to run anything else while trying LE… this includes graphical overlays (steam/nvidia), capture devices etc… Unity (the LE game engine) is known to have some strange interactions with other apps so its best not to run anything while testing to tick them off as possible issues.

To find the best config for your setup:

After you have done the above

Note: this is just one way to do it that I have found is a good way to ensure a compromise between game stability and eye-candy and performance - you could obviously just set your fps to the hz of your monitor and mess with the other settings till you are happy and the game is stable.

  1. Set the game to 1080p, ALL in-game settings to very low, disabled or the lowest drop down option - manually change each setting… Leave vsync/framerate limit off.
  2. Enable F11 to show framerate in-game (top left) or use something like Riva Tuner.
  3. Check fps in town and in a single general map killing a few mobs. Nothing extensive.
  4. This should be the best FPS the game gets on your hardware. It should be over 100fps for your hardware at these settings… if its not then there is DEFINITELY something else wrong as I get this on my old 1060.
  5. Now enable framerate limiting to this max fps. You need to enable framerate limiting to keep the game stable.
  6. Increase resolution to whatever you want to play at and monitor the Fps you are getting at the higher resolution.
  7. Adjust the framerate limit down to the new max at your res.
  8. Now monitor your GPU usage & temps while in town and killing a few mobs… If your GPU usage % is higher than 60-70% then decrease the FPS till its in that range - this is obviously different for different hardware but I have found that aiming for this range give the GPU some headroom to handle busy moments in game and prevents the GPU from being maxed out or near max all the time… Obviously if your GPu is getting too hot, then reduce fps limits.
  9. With the above, you should have a stable game at the resolution you want with a GPU that is comfortable.
  10. Now you can start messing with the in-game eye-candy settings one at a time while monitor the affect each has on your setup using the same metrics above… If you want to play in 4k I would probably suggest you stay in the very low range but you will have to see what happens for yourself…

The key here is to be conservative while the game is in its current state - that gives the best results and allows you to enjoy the game… When the devs can spend some quality time dealing with the optimisation then we can all up the quality… but for now imho, its not worth it vs stability and performance.

Thanks Vapour !!!
