If you lose to the Exiled Mage before completing the echo requirements in the Monolith you will lose the echo.
If you wait until you complete the echo requirements, dont portal out yet, then go back and challenge the Exiled Mage you will still get credit for the echo even if you lose to the Exiled Mage.
