Valetide node doesn't feel very good

The Valetide node, which gives proc casts of Entangling Roots for Spriggan form does not feel very good to use because of how the proc works.
Vale Spirits offer a nice damage increase, and Valetide removes all of them to cast Entangling Roots, forcing you to build them up again. Because the proc is automatic, the timing of this cannot really be controlled, and often the roots go off at a time that isn’t useful, removing your vale spirits for little benefit beyond rage generation.
I think it would be better if the casting of Entangling Roots in Spriggan Form was tied to another ability so it could be activated manually. For me, if casting Thorn Shield would release the nodes that would be pretty nice, since I don’t make much use of the ability, and I think taking the tree in this direction tends to mean you’ll be using Thorn Shield less often, and it would make the gameplay more engaging since I end up leaning hard into casting Spirit Thorns a lot.
But since I use it infrequently, and this might conflict with other builds, I wish to provide alternative solutions that I think would be good. I think temporarily changing the ability to transform into human form when you are at the threshold to cast Entangling Roots would also be good. Maybe reducing the node’s power and causing it not to remove, or to not consume all of your vale spirits would work as well.
Hopefully if these are not good, someone else can make a suggestion as well.

You can get the node that gives vale spirits on totem death, convert healing totem to thorn totems, get 5 thorns totems per cast, summon them 1 or 2 times then you have capped vale spirits. Easy rythm to spam Entangling Roots.

are you suggesting you would rather the entangling roots proc not require 30 consecutive casts of spirit thorns and delete all your spirits? (this is mostly sarcasm)

I agree that this node feels clunky. If you don’t use the healing / thorn totem usage Seph describes, the amount of use, even with high cast speed, just isn’t worth the time. Maybe at max vale spirits, roots should cast every 3rd spirit thorns? Maybe convert summon vine to entangling roots at max vale spirits?

A manual way to cast entangling roots within Spriggan Form would be very thematic to the form.

I will put this here, since it’s related but probably doesn’t deserve its own thread. Entangling roots not playing a bigger part of a spriggan form kit feels kinda bad. I feel like there should probably be a node which after you hit a max number of Summoned Vines you shoot out an entangling roots, that way, you can hit all your vines with entangling roots to give them their buffs. Or just have a nicely controllable way to get entangling roots out. Also vines are the most thematic skill to match up with entangling roots.

I personally don’t use Valetide Node due to the reason that I don’t use healing totem and casting spirit thorns 20 times for entangling root feels clunky for me.

Maybe if they change the node to have chance to cast entangling root per vale spirit like 1/2% Chance per active Vale Spirit to cast Entangling Root on casting Spirit Thorns per allocated point, then it might be worth for me to grab the node.

Let’s be real, werebear form woodland bear node allows you to cast entangling roots with 1 cast of maul, 100% chance. Compared to that, valetide feels like a joke, requiring more than double the time to fill up vale spirits, lock you in place while casting for at least 8s even with 50+% cast speed.

My suggestion is that instead of consuming all vale spirits to cast entangling root, let’s do something like this:

  1. Valetide - 10% entangling roots chance on spirit thorns per vale spirit you have (so 60% max).
  2. Spirit whisperer - Vale spirit every 2 spirit thorns casts: 1
  3. Spirit whisperer - Vale spirit every 5 spirit thorns casts: 3

This will make casting entangling roots from spriggan form (barely) comparable to werebear form.

If you’re doing a caster, you’ll want more than just 50%. My Spirit Thorns Spriggan has somewhere around 150% or so with perma-Frenzy & I’m sure it gets into the low 200s with a cast speed shrine.

Well I play spriggan vines so I don’t need that much cast speed, but from my calculation if you get all cast speed from passive, affixes and implicits you will get somewhere around 130-150% cast speed. But anyway, it’s still very terrible with valetide.

Now that I’ve gotten to a point where I’m able to stack a decent bit of cast speed and only put one point into it, it’s more the deletion of the spirits than the number of casts - I’m able to proc it rather consistently. It’s also that, although it is nice to free up skill points for other things, I have the impression that even if I didn’t need those points that 1/3 Valetide is better than 3/3. I don’t think this should be the case.
Fairly related is also that I never find it worthwhile to cast Thorn Shield, causing my build to be most effective when only using three abilities actively, making its gameplay a bit simple compared to other builds I have played.

Yes, I agree that thorn shield on its own is quite underwhelming compared to other spriggan skills, and it can’t regen rage like other skills with their respective nodes.
