This is not new with any recent patch and has been bothering me for ages. Most of my deaths are when I’m ‘playing normally imo’ and I stop attacking even though I’m pressing Swipe and then I die fast (no leech).
I’ll try and explain as clearly as I can what happens. I believe it is related to how hitboxes change with mob animations - bear with me as I continue with this assumption.
I’m fighting ADA (one of the three dragons you take on together. I chose her because she has similar animations to my next example). I’m holding down Q and Swiping her. When Ravage comes of cooldown, I press W and release (and I DO NOT released Q). I Ravage the mob and then Swipe starts again. If I do this while the cursor is held over the middle of her model it all continues to work when she does the rear-up and breath flame animation. During this animation the cursor is not actually on her model, its in front of her (because her model animated during combat) but it still works.
I assume what I describe above is intended functionality? Please correct/enlighten me otherwise.
The problem scenario occurs with mobs that jig around alot during combat and are small (hello Shade!) or are big and have impressive animations.
If I repeat the exact same style of fighting (muscle memory, you know) against the Emperor of Corpses, I have recurrent and demonstrable problems.
I attack with Q held down permanently as normal and Swipe away. I press and release W to Ravage each time it comes off cooldown. All good, I Ravage then go back to Swiping automatically. Then the problem occurs with his big rear-up and breath animation. If I Ravage during the animation it fails to attack, then I stop attacking, even though Q (Swipe) has remained pressed throughout.
I will only resume Swiping by releasing then pressing Q (Swipe).
During the animation he lifts his head up and I think his hitbox is changing shape or size. I have installed YoloMouse to turn my cursor red with a mob targetted and blue default. During the breath animation, as long as I have Swipe pressed down the YoloMouse cursor remains pink (mob targetted) even though the cursor which I haven’t moved is pointing at empty space beneath his chest (he reared up). I can continue Swiping forever without problem, however in this state Ravage will fail to attack and it will softlock my attack sequence.
My guess at this time is Swipe has a larger range than Ravage and the animation situation I have described is when Swipe, which is perfectly well in range) has the cursor in attack mode, but because I do not release the Q button (Swipe) the state of the cursor position is in some way not correctly communicated to Ravage (with less range).
To the best of my ability I’ve compared what I think I’m experiencing to using the different left-click options (move compared to move and attack with Q) but I really couldn’t see any difference at all. The ‘move to melee attack’ option in Settings also didn’t appear to have any effect – I’m doing my testing by placing the cursor on the mob then not moving the mouse at all. I’m not moving the character.
I would love for someone to tell me what I’m doing wrong! When I played ranged it took me an hour to work out I could shoot lighting by pointing at mobs and pressing attack buttons without clicking the mouse haha. I’m a pretty slow learner
