Useful Chat improvements

Chat needs some minor improvements that would go a long way to improving its functionality:

  • Retain chat settings between logout
If you leave public chat, it should maintain that setting in future sessions

  • Font size options
This should really be an accessibility option for all text in the game, but at least for chat. Some of us are playing with low vision, and I’m sure it would also benefit people playing on high resolution monitors or on the TV as well.

  • An option for a sound or notification for whisper messages
Private messages are way too easy to get missed now. I find myself frequently not seeing them even with public chat disabled.

  • An option to show timestamps
This especially helpful for whispers while they lack any form of notification and can get missed, but is a nice option regardless.

  • The ability to resize the chat window
Not critical at the moment but may prove important if chat font size is allowed to be adjusted, as the window size may need to be increase or tweaked to different dimensions to accommodate larger text.

We seriously need the ability to leave channels individually. I should be able to respond to people in the help channel without needing to have global active all the time.

All this points have been repeatedly on wish lists years back and not a single one has been done yet.

Sad.

This needs upvoting and more visibility, just like the game! lol

Could we also have the chat split into Cycle and Legacy? LFG etc is a nightmare.

Would putting a level restriction on global chat help combat the recent bots spamming their goldselling adverts?

I like the idea of some way to stop or at least delay them. That was done in other games I played a while back and I think it’s at least some small deterrent. The problem is that you get levels so fast it probably wouldn’t be much help regrettably.

Sure, but it would also negatively impact new players who are using global chat to get help. The cost – when there are potentially other solutions to fight goldsellers – is not worth it IMO.

Frankly, I’d be pretty happy with being able to click their names in the chat window to report them, and have it autoblock anyone reported, then at least I dont have to see it until those accounts can be reviewed and hopefully removed.

There could also be a very small chat throttle that prevents you from sending more than two messages immediately one after the other. Something as small like 10 seconds would be enough to break up their multiline messages, which wouldn’t necessarily deter them, but make them at least less disruptive with their huge blocks of multi-line spam.

LOL I did not realise it was not split already. Also a weird choice.

What would also be nice, given that unlike the rest of the world, the devs don’t think social features, e.g., guilds are important, would be at least a “Friends” channel.

Questions for you @rocdog, how do you “know” that the devs don’t think social features are important? I don’t know that they “do” think that, but how is it that you “do” know they don’t?

Just because they have not implemented a feature yet that you think is important doesn’t mean they don’t agree with you. There may be other reasons they have not implemented it, or just haven’t done it yet.

They’ve said more than once, including in the Reddit AMA a little while back that they don’t think a chat channel is worth creating a guild system for, and haven’t committed to anything to support them.

It’s 2024. Even refrigerators have social features now. Their absence in a multiplayer game speaks volumes.

Putting 1 or 2 developers on a chat that is functioning, but could use some polish for months is very costly if you only got 10 and you wanna get 1.0 out
Luckily it seems that things is getting fixed at a faster pace right now, i hope they keep that up.

Also why can’t I curse in party and whispers? I get the restriction for something like global chat, but sometimes I just really need to send a friend a string of swears.

Just because they don’t think a chat channel is worth creating a guild system for, that doesn’t automatically imply that they don’t think social features are important. A chat channel for guilds isn’t the only thing that is considered a social feature.
