Upgrading an affix without having the shard for it?

I was watching a stream where a new player had only 1 shard of an affix which he added to an item and then was somehow able to upgrade it reaching T2 with 1 affix.

I guess the steps to reproduce are something like:

  1. Have 1 shard of an affix
  2. Add it to an item
  3. ???
  4. You can upgrade it even though it shows you have no affixes

Edit: Looks like it was a critical success but the UI didn’t reflect it properly.
