Unique item purposes

Since a lot of uniques are really build specific and/or class/skill specific its not worth it for a lot of other builds/classes skills etc to use that unique.

I think because of this, people considering it being a shit uniques way faster. I do atleast.
While you play the specific unique for those builds were it was designed for its great…
Thats the problem i have with the unique item pool right now.

There are to many specific builds in my opinion. Putting +1 for skill x and +1 to skill Y but not to the rest between A and Z or a bigger part of them makes some of the uniques to 1/2 specific builds interesting but gives the rest a bad taste.

While i think games like this also need those specific uniques i feel that the there are not enough uniques with some freedom of interpertation stats or usages.

Iam glad however that they are getting more interesting now and some of them build enabling. I would love to see more items with Spells tags or Melee tags or smaller groups like Elements (fire, cold etc) do this or that. Instead of specifing it only to a specific cold spell which happends a lot on the uniques they have right now.

There is still a TON of design space left to cover due to the way Uniques are in this game. There are a lot of builds I like that I wish I had a niche unique for. I actually think it is interesting and fun trying to build around them.

I just don’t want there to be uniques that are just generally great because I don’t want a ubiquitous BiS item. With Legendaries now, 4LP Exsanguinous and Woven Flesh seem pretty close to that. The extreme rarity keeps that in check I guess.

Thats why i like that one. Iam not saying we need a ton of generally great items.
I like looking up a unique and having more potential of trying out the unique with different classes. It doesnt have to be overpowered but just interesting enough to try.

I hope some more items will be like Exsanguinous and Woven Flesh.
Iam really happy that EHG also reworked some uniques this patch btw!
They reworked the shield The Slab for example and now it actually looks interesting imo :smiley:

That’s not what I meant. Exsanguinous and Woven Flesh alone are good, but not BiS for the vast majority of builds. I meant I don’t want a Unique item that is just outright BiS for most builds. The advent of the Legendary system can make those 2 items feel like that if you win the lottery and find a 4LP version.

What makes Unique items stand out from every other item is that they can have weird, niche, nutty stuff on them that other items can’t. Sometimes they have broader appeal, but I think it’s more interesting when that’s the exception rather than the rule. Having a bunch of Uniques that most people want is boring. It just makes them into normal items except with a different color text.

I’ve never really understood the attachment some seem to have - across many games in this genre - to Unique items needing to always or even sometimes have a wide array of builds they’re attractive to. It should be no different than any other type of item - most of what drops, period, is going to be something that isn’t interesting to you. If that gives you “a bad taste” for Uniques but nothing else, I think that’s an attitude problem, not a design problem.

I do like wider variety uniques aswell, why not both?
Iam not stating that every unique should be viable for every class.
Its for many uniques not even viable to be played if your not playing a certain skill.
Its good to have those uniques aswell but i rather have a unique which supports an element and something niche so you can still experiment within the class with a different spell aswell.

I like that part of build creation and normally i can tinker around certain uniques for hours in other RPG’s just in the hopes of finding something else viable and fun enough to play the game how it might not was intended

A lot of new LE uniques are focused on specific classes and skills ie Devotion amulet, I think its good for each build to have certain slots that have a unique item that cant be beaten especially if it gives no/little defence as now you have pressure on every other piece of gear

Thats an inherit design issue with Legendary system but its also not exactly true currently for all gear, using a Maelstrom build as example not only is there no unique Staves that work if EHG does release a unique Staff that focused on Cold/Spell and even buffing some interaction with Maelstrom it HAS to be on a high base or it just wont be as good as a rare, because Adaptive Spell damage is too important - specially on a DoT spell build

Melee/Bows with LP now can get around this by enchanting +Melee phys/void etc onto weapons but Staves/Wands dont have this option they only get generic increases to spells

I have the same sentiments as you and which is why I feel itemisation and build options still feel rather one-dimensional to me in LE.
