At the moment when you ignore another user on the forums you no longer see their messages which is fine. I was wondering if you could add a proper block function so if I choose no longer to interact with someone they stop seeing what I post as well as me being unable to see what they post.
Right now if I ignore someone and then make a thread it’s weird when they reply then someone else replies to them in the same thread.
+1 for full 100% block - they can’t see me, I can’t see them.
Thanks.
Edit - I’ve noticed someone I have on ignore has commented on this thread as it shows their icon in the latest post interaction section, that’s the kind of person(s) I wish couldn’t see what I wrote as well as me not being able to see whatever troll bait they’ve added to this thread
Sounds like a massive waste of resources. If you can’t stand reading someone’s opinion even when it’s not adressing you directly, maybe you should rethink what communities you want to belong to.
I’m kinda the other view tbh. Why should someone be “chased out” of a community because they don’t get on with one other person (or a small subset, or something)?
And I feel that still seeing that a blocked person has posted something is a bit weird.
Most blocked situations that occur on the forums are people that are throwing tantrums like little kids. They just put their fingers in their ears and go “LALALA, can’t hear you”. And now they also want to put their hands in their eyes and go “You can’t see me”. It’s honestly all childish. This would all simply be solved by just skipping/not reading posts you don’t want to read, like a regular adult.
You don’t, you just see replies to those posts. Or do you think other people that reply to those should also be blocked? Especially considering that many of those replies are part of a block of replies to other people as well?
That is just another childish suggestion. Especially because this is the internet. Doing this would mean that people would start blocking other people just so they could insult them freely without them knowing about it.
I personally don’t see why someone requires machine assistance in ignoring someone, especially when that person isn’t even being insulting (quite the contrary, most of the times is was Donzpie being insulting), just disagreeing with you. All his issues would have been solved if he just ignored posts like an adult, instead of throwing it on the ground.
From memory you’d see a gap or something where the blocked person posted something & if someone else quoted the blocked person you’d see the quote header but nothing else of the quote.
I never ignored anyone (even people that were only posting to insult me personally), but I’d say that’s the obvious way it should work. You would see that someone posted something, just not what they posted.
This is necessary for context of other people’s replies.
Mostly for when people are harassing you with constant insults. Although even then you can simply ignore the posts and report them, which is what I did.
Not for when people are just disagreeing with you on a forum that is supposed to be about discussing ideas.
Lol this guy! Dj - I’ve ignored and unignored you about 7 times. You disagree with every single thing I say and if you don’t its because instead of being constructive about something you’ve chosen to clog up someones forum thread by nitpicking a technical fault in what I’ve answered with. I get people get bored but it’s actually wild the lengths you go to target my comments. Stuff that actually has no bearing in the grand scheme of the post you’ll jump on and ride it hard to get as much post milage as you can.
Example would be you grinding the technical specific of how removing and readding an item with +skills on it works. The entire reason I posted in the first place was just to agree with the original poster saying the system is dumb. Did you reply to his post saying you liked it? Nah man, you targetted me and ended up with what I only imagine is over a dozen replies or nitpicked segments/posts just pointing at me. You flooded that whole thread with comments directed at me just like in every thread I post in with my opinion. You and I don’t think about anything at all relating to this game in a similar matter which is fine but I don’t go around looking for your posts to read through and then nitpick/try climb on a high horse. It’s pretty malicious to be honest the way you systematically do this to me.
@Llama8 I am unsure what that guy you replied to said because I have him ignored and the reason for that is he choses to specifically troll/target and try get a rise out of me on here. That’s the exact person I would want to “block” and why I made this post.
There is no missing out for the person I would block. I don’t bring any special news or excitement to the forum. Not seeing my posts wouldn’t be anyone missing out on a “community” in case anyone hadnt noticed lately theres a handful of people on here usually just whinging about the poor state of the game.
Block should 100% be a feature to stop people feeling harassed. The fact that one of the few people who I want to block was actually the first person to reply to this thread, probably saying something to further my case is just straight up hilarious.
Which interestingly proves the point I and DJSamhein have made - the so-called “harassement” or “troll bait” is just a disagreement the person is too infantile to deal with. Asking for blocks to work both ways is a desire to "just put their fingers in their ears and go “LALALA, can’t hear you” in reply to a mild inconvenience, usually the inconvenience of being proved wrong.
It’s an option you don’t have to use, no ones forcing you to block someone. If you’re worried about being blocked then I guess maybe you’re being a bit of a d-head. The only reason people would not want to be blocked is having fomo and if you have fomo on these forums with all of 4 regulars ruining 95% of the posts with their own personal game of who’s the smartest then that’s your problem.
Having seen what kind of crap I post give me a reason why you would care if I blocked you (if there was a an option for it)
Ah, getting personal and insulting when anyone disagrees with you.
True to form.
My post had nothing to do with what you post or who is getting blocked or why, it was just a general thought about the nature of forums. General, not personal.
A game forum is not social media. This is an open platform. Adding a block option to it is complete nonsense. It needs to be moderated, of course, but not personalised. And this specific forum happens to be moderated, both by EHG and by the community (a post disappears if it is downvoted several times). That is what an open forum needs, that is enough, it does not need personal options to add/remove users from specific threads.
Systems do exist online where you can create sub-groups and select who you interact with. Discord, WhatsApp, many others. They serve different purposes, and it is great that they exist. But a game forum is not the place for that, it exists for open discussions, not private convos.
Again, when I say “nonsense”, I do not mean your post. I mean the general fact of having a block option on a game forum. This is pointless and defeats the purpose of a forum. It shouldn’t exist. Can’t see why someone decided to put this option in. Bad idea.
But of course, feel free to misinterpret and block/insult/rant at me. I won’t block you in retaliation.
Where do you think I got personal and insulted you? - Was it my d-head comment because my comment meant if you (a person on here) were blocked by someone then the chances are they blocked you because you were being a d-head. I was not calling you a d-head. I also find it laughable that people are assuming someone is being blocked for not having a disagreement with someone else. I personally ignored one guy because every single post he made on other peoples threads was to me, personally a waste of time and I did not want to see his posts.
Tell me (any one whos posted in here so far) how that comes under childish or someone else having a disagreement? I don’t wish to see their avatar pop up on my threads and see a blank message and then see other people reply to it.
I just don’t get how anyone here cares about what someone else is doing. If I block somone why do you care? If Tim blocks Ryan what do you care? It doesn’t matter to you and if it does please explain how it matters I’d love to hear it.
Under the current system, you are right. It doesn’t affect anyone, if you want to hide some parts of the discussion from your screen, so be it, it is your screen.
I still find a blocking system completely unnecessary on a forum, but to each their own.
However, your suggestion was that if you block someone, that person cannot see your posts anymore. Effectively, you would be kicking people out of entire threads, creating some kind of private groups where you would choose who can participate or not. In that case, I do care.
I think it is wrong, it belongs on social media, not on forums.
PS:
Fair enough, I took the “you” as meaning me instead of a generic person, I apologise.
This is one of the main issue of this (terrible) suggestion. It creates a kind of censorship by excluding people from discussions.
It also takes away people’s agency. Donzpie has decided to block me because he feels like I have humiliated him when I proved he was wrong, and so it’s his choice to not read my posts; one he can undo whenever he wants (and it doesn’t matter anyway, because he has more than one forum account so he could just read my posts in them). But if blocking someone forbade them from seeing your posts and threads, the person who had been blocked would have no choice in the matter - they would be unable to read the posts whether they wanted or not.
And the third flaw is a more practical one - EHG has very few resources, using them on something as small and petty as this would be a huge waste of time.
They’ve got, like, over a hundred people, that’s not “very few resources”… Granted, they have much, much, bigger fish to fry & they need to focus on way more important things than a full block for the forum (like the game).
Right now I’ve ignored Erasculio because all he did was try rage bait me but I can still see he’s commented on my thread and then @Llama8 has commented on his replies on my thread thus creating some kind of private group where I can’t see chat about the very thread I created. So yeah, we already have what you are afraid of above because we do NOT have a block.
If he couldn’t see what I posted then I wouldn’t have this problem and I have no doubt whatever he’s posted is trying to disagree and trigger some kind of response you can go back through activity to see his comments on any of my posts it’s all the same stemming back months to a disagreement. This would have been solved early and I wouldn’t feel personally attacked and hunted if I could have just blocked him. I really feel like its unfair on my mental health that it’s been like this. I like the forums, I like to post and read and I feel if you don’t want to interact with a specific person you should have a complete option to block them. It’s also not a choice when that person causes you anxiety to just “unignore”
The main difference here is that Donzpie is in this situation because he chose to be. He decided to ignore me, and so he has decided that there will be content in this forum - anything I post - he won’t be able to see.
His suggestion is for him to make this same decision for other people - for him to decide what others can and cannot see, regardless of what they want.
His logic may apply to “private” pages in social media (which IMO only pushes people into social bubbles), but it doesn’t work in a public gaming forum. Which is why I don’t know any single gaming forum that does this.
Some people cannot tell the difference between being pointed out as wrong and a personal attack.
Plainly spoken it’s also a bad idea in social media, for that specific reason. In a public place you got to deal with your words being visible by everyone… or you need to avoid public space.
The other way around is fine, everyone can absolutely decide what to take in or not, that is a personal choice.
No clue what you replied to but I do know to whom (who? whom?) what you said is spot on though. Once someone targets you like he has or like Dj likes to it becomes this horrible issue of whenever I login here I feel scared to see notifications because its the same person replying trying to put me down, prove me wrong, disagree just for their personal enjoyment when my reply has no bering on what the original post is about or asking for.
To clarify for you:
The argument given by @Erasculio is reasonable and logical, even if you can’t currently see it.
It is thus:
Your suggestion says that people shouldn’t see your posts, which I fully understand the notion behind it.
Upon taking a step back and thinking about this though it falls into the same issue-category as ‘private pages’ in social media does, which is exclusion of information in a public space without the agency of the person supposed to see said information.
This introduces far more issues then it solves. It gives a individual power over others. The existing situation of allowing to ignore people is agency of an individual to not be able to see their messages, attached with all upsides (you don’t have to read them anymore) but also the downsides (you are excluded from the argumentation lines others do and still are exposed from third party individuals hence).
The ‘third party’ aspect cannot be solved without causing a complete breakdown of a public environment into individually scaled private ones.
It is extremely hard to defend in spaces which allow it already (like social media platforms) but in a space for a company it is simply untenable.
As for fringe-issues:
If you create a topic, would the whole topic be invisible to them or only your messages in the topic be blocked?
If it’s only the messages you’ll still see third-party interaction, which is the core issue.
If it’s a complete topic then it’s causing echo chambers as individuals can completely censor access to anyone which is not agreeing with them, which leads to all sorts of follow-up problems.
This censoring is only allowed for the owners of such a space, in this case EHG, because this is not a democratic ‘free speech’ space but a company curated area, we’re allowed to voice what we want to voice at their lenience… with the following upsides and downsides for them.
