Touble determining if one passive is better than the other for paladin

How do I tell if filling out Righteous Firebrand is better than Pheonix strike or penance? I’m not sure if I can trust the tool tips of my abilities.

I also don’t see any buff after casting smite to show that I’m getting more melee fire damage.

This is a fire warpath build. From my understanding (I don’t know why) + to raw damage numbers is the most significant damage boost in the game, besides multiplicative buffs like fire pen or other ability talents.

You need to apply a combination of consideration based on your build, and experimentation.

For example: Penance adds Bleed. Does that even make any sense for a fire focused build?

Yes, warpath turns bleeds into ignites.

I guess I was more asking how true the ability numbers are vs reality.

Then 12% vs 15% seems like a pretty easy comparison?

DPS tooltips are not particularly accurate at the moment, no.

I’m asking if: (righteous firebrand) > (phoenix strike OR penance)… for a fire warpath build that auto casts smite.

How are people testing damage? By looking at numbers flying off the training dummies?

Dummies aren’t great gauges either, especially in your case where you’d be trying to look at dozens of numbers flying off constantly.

I assume anyone who is doing deep comparisons is just doing the math. But there are also a lot of people that are mostly going by experimentation and feel, since there aren’t very robust tools.
