I’ve noticed when searching for “key” to sort my dump tabs every belt is being highlighted as well. I believe its because of the tool tip text for the potion slots that says the hot key for use. I’m not sure if there is a beneficial use for searching by reminder text, but in this instance its a tad annoying.
I think it’s mostly because some stats give bonuses to other stats, like strength giving bonuses to armor. So if you’re searching for stuff to increase your armor, it will highlight str items as well. But I agree that this is hardly ever used with that intent.
The devs are planning better search functionality for the stash. We just have to wait and see what they come up with.
The bigger annoyance for me is how it groups things together. If I want to search “elemental resist”, it find all the elemental resist, fire resist, cold, lightning. I also think if you look for ‘physical’ it also include bleed, since bleed does physical damage. It really negates any advantage of having a search, if it’s so liberal with the criteria.

Yeah I think it does this as the more info or somewhere else it says what you’re looking for. It shouldn’t do that since the purpose is to search for the item that has the specific affect you are looking for and not for text within the explanation of that item.
