Tips/guides for levelling

Hey all,

Am a new player and recently got to the ‘end-game’ of beta with Monolith and Fate and Arena runs and am really enjoying the game and want to dive more into it.

Am terrible at levelling though which is discouraging and wondering if people have tips for tips or guides for it?

Seeing people like Boardman21, Thyworm and McFluffin pump out different builds for new characters on a weekly basis so I must be doing something wrong.

See you in game.

Hey Wigglesworth,
as u said, boardman and thyworm both have good videos for that:

I think where many new players struggle is the first couple levels without knowing, which skills are currently strong in early game, because later you can play pretty much every skill really easy. But there are definitly good skills in the beginning you can use too make early game faster and more safe due to high dmg. What i personally realized when i started the game, putting all the points in offense was not that helpful  especially void and later necrotic/poison dmg is really strong against you, so always keep your resistances high.

if you’ve leveled around 5 characters as well, you get the hang of it, I’d say. Here are a few very beginner friendly skills:

  • Mage --> Lightning Blast (spec into damage, chains, and multicast)
  • Acolyte --> Necromancer (just use any skill that says Minion on it, and get minion stats on your gear)
  • Sentinel --> Probably hardest class at the start, because he lacks damage. Rive is pretty decent, when going for hit & attack speed & flat damage. Hammer Throw is easy as well, especially when you make it spiral and get some throwing damage on your gear.
  • Primalist --> Very versatile actually. Beastmaster is straightforward, where you can’t do much wrong in the campaign. Just get minion stats on your gear. Spellcaster is also pretty straightforward, with Maelstrom being a very good leveling and end-game skill.

Overall: defences are equally important. Act 1 is a lot of void damage. The following act, there is a ton of necrotic damage. Poison hurts as well. So get some vitality on your gear or passives.

Hope this helps.

exactly, in the beginning u also don’t really know how monsters react, move or attack. After couple chars you made you realize how to play around those mechanics. So it’s not only about picking the right skills, it’s more about game knowledge, like in every other game. But i understand the early struggle for new players!
Keep up your work @Thyworm , good content!

i tagged my post wrong I saw, should have been OP, but fine… I know you know how to play this game
Thanks! Will keep up the content. Not much else to do these days anyway, eh?

I think it’s bad idea to advise skill that crash game
Also (IMHO) Mana Strike is much better for Sorc and Spellblade for leveling
Simple skill for campaign

for me the crashes weren’t all that bad and the skill itself is super nice and smooth for a beginner I think. But fair point, it does crash the client every now and then.

Just to throw in my 2 cents here: I’ve leveled up quite a few alts now and was struggling a bit with mage. One word “Glacier”. Just freeze 'em and whack 'em. You don’t even need to level the skill up.

It’s not crashing the game certainly. There are many people who don’t have a problem. I never had an issue with this skill. And with the new skilltree Lightning Blast is very strong.

This. And Elemental Nova. Last is my skill of choice for low level mage.

I’d also suggest pet classes like Beastmaster and Necro for the start. These classes melt the story atm.

Also where are a lot of people who have this problem

And it’s very bad idea advise them use Blast after that whey have crash and say “what a bad game…”

Think not only of yourself, but also of others

There’s a misunderstanding here. Many people are not aware that there’s an issue with Lightning Blast because they don’t have one. And not everybody is browsing the bugreport section to know all possible crash causes.

I don’t think it was anybody’s “idea” to knowingly advise a skill that has crash potential. So please don’t write as if.

Also it’s a beta and not an advertisement. People not getting along with crashes during beta testing should not play in beta. The best way to prevent your client from crashing is: don’t play.

Advise a beginner to choose a skill that can crash game (even if you don’t have crashes, a lot of people have it) not good

You just don’t get my point. But it’s ok.

Better that you get my point and will not advise skill that can crash game
Also where are a lot of another skill for leveling

Started an Acolyte and used Rip Blood like suggested and like you guys said it definitely makes a bit difference what skills you use. Hadn’t considered that so thanks

What about when it comes to what to do during levelling? Does everyone just b-line for the main quests and forget about side-quests till later or are there some worth doing?

And do you have any strategies during ‘end-game’ Monolith and Arena to level quicker? Was thinking something like going as far as you can in them or spamming lower level ones for quicker xp?

All sidequests are worth doing because they give you xp, additional passive points and idol slots.

Everytime I level a new toon I do every quest and side quest in the order I get them.

It is possible to rush through the levels by ignoring monsters and straight running to the quest markers. But when you get to the bosses you might have a bad time.

As it is designed right now the Monolith is the only place to get arena key. You get 1 per every 5 runs. The higher you go on monolith the more the modifiers stack and you get more and more xp and magic find increase.

Arena rewards aren’t that good. But it’s the place to go for xp. Whereas monolith is the place to find better gear.

So the strategy would be to go as high as you can on both modes. Progressing above level 70 on monolith will take much longer so you should enter the arena as often as possible. Don’t claim the arena rewards. Always go as high as you can.

For endgame it’s necessary to have high protections or you will die a lot. This will slow your progression because monolith and arena will reset to 0 everytime you die during a run.

So if you start with endgame the first step would be to optimise your gear towards flat protections, glancing blow chance (100% is the goal) and critical strike avoidance.

For leveling I’d also suggest to craft a lot. But do not focus on 4 affixed so much. Items are good with 2-3 good affixes. Save the glyphs for endgame gear but use all other affix shards as you wish. You will find a lot later on.

Edit:
I forgot you are leveling a Acolyte. You could also aim for a ward build instead if protections. In this case you would aim for +int o. gear for ward retention and ignore the protections. Glancing blow and critical strike avoidance still is necessary
