Throwing weapons

before this patch, there were not many throwing attacks in the game, and it made sense that there were not weapons specific to them. the scaling of those attacks has always felt a little weak in terms of hit damage to me, because there are so few sources of flat damage for them. most of the builds i’ve looked at for throwing attacks rely on ailments or spell damage, and the throwing attack itself is just a delivery system.

i think with the addition of rogue, it makes sense to have actual weapons that are intended for throwing attacks. she has 4 throwing attacks (although acid flask and decoy are not necessarily thematically connected to a “throwing weapon”), and a paucity of support for them on the tree. this is compounded by the lack of flat damage sources for builds that want to do hit-based throwing attacks. i’m not saying they aren’t viable, but they are vastly outshone by things like ailment stacking blade shield shuriken.

i understand that adding a whole new weapon type would involve a ton of work for the devs. new weapon designs, new animations, new rigging for models, and a rework of all existing throwing skills to account for the new ways of acquiring flat damage. this is not something i would expect in the game before 1.0, realistically, but it’s definitely something i would like to see in the future.

i think it also opens up a lot of design space for skills and uniques to augment the playstyle. we could even have 2-handed throwing weapons. (but not javelins, or else someone will make another angry thread about taking ideas from diablo :stuck_out_tongue:).

I’d be happy if they used some current models but with different names and throwing stats to get it in the game.

Yeah! I’m all in for thi idea. Creating throwing builds has some downsides with having to use amu and ring affix slots for building flat damage, while weapons are not that useful. And the weapon choice doesn’t represent the playstyle - I’m looking at you 2h staff wielding shield throw sentinel!

So throwing a shield that you don’t have is more of an afront to reality than being able to cast fireballs or teleport?

It is. When I see gameplay of new world where the character pulls a spear from his back, throws it on an enemy and then jus another spear appears on his back… this looks weird.

Nothing game breaking. But it somehow distracts my immersion.

While channeling magic projectiles like fireballs I accept the fantasy that the caster has the ability to connect with a magic force in his inner self or his surroundings. It’s pure energy, given a form.

So if a Sentinel was able to connect to this force, too, to create something magic to throw at the enemies, why would this be a real object? Wouldn’t it be more difficult to create a real object than just an image of it, like an energy disc?

Throwing the shield he wears that would return to him is ok. Creating a real shield out of nothing is just a power he should not be able to wield - the power of creation.

Oh god. This explanation doesn’t make much sense in a fantasy game. But I can’t help it.

From memory its not the shield he’s wearing though, it’s a basic shield that never changes. So it’s like the magical throwing hammer he uses for Hammer Throw (magical because when was the last time you threw a hammer and it returned to you).

Also, I’m pretty sure the shield you throw is obeying the laws of physics about as much as that fireball, so I (with my physics degree) don’t have a problem with it being a magical shield.
