I played arpgs with a controller so far, including LE. But an interesting build for my shaman requires I precisely target my totems to cast stuff on it. So I’m trying to play with keyboard + mouse.
I can handle skills, but moving feels so awkward.
I keep making mistakes because the same cursor is used to both move and shoot skills. With a pad, i have one stick only to move and the rest of the buttons to do other things.
For regular maps I don’t mind so much, but i’m now about to face Abbey Road :)) with my 9 eyes (already used one, got caught in the first AOE attack, lasted 5 sec). For that kind of fight or for farming eyes on high Corrption, i need to move precisely. Mistakes are often lethal.
So I will practice and get used to it, but is there any tip or good practice regarding moving the character with a mouse in a arpg ? For example, do you “drag” the character all along with left button always clicked ? Do you click only to change direction ?
When walking around in the map I usually just hold down left click. But during fights I will single click to move.
Mostly it’s just a matter of getting used to it. You have to sort of “divide” your brain to know that you have to stop using skills to move and you have to move your mouse fast in between both.
But it seems like WASD movement would be a plus for you (there are plans for it but probably way into the future).
I’ll follow up with what DJ said with a confirmation that it becomes second nature at some point. I had to stop and think for a second on how to even put it into words on how I move with the mouse. Like DJ I click and drag for general exploration, I do it in shorter bursts in combat though. I rarely just click to move without holding down left click.
I keep my primary attacking skill on my right click and my main CD skill on Q (I think QWER is default? If not, then 1), I keep my movement skill on E/3 (Fury Leap, for example), long CD or defensive skill on W/2 (Warcry for example is always on W/2), and then my final skill is typically an “always on CD” that I use the numlock trick for and keep that on R/4
Edit, just had to open the game to test it haha. I actually just realized I rarely let go of left click, even in combat, I just swipe it back and forth and right click/press the skill button when it’s in the pack of enemies/near the boss.
LOL
This is the exact same way I set up my skills bar too, even the numlock trick being on R.
At first it was only the movement skill that had a fixed place, always on E. But then I extended the pattern to all skills in all characters.
My habit stretched from FFXIV, I played at least one class per role (2 for Tank, 1 for Healer, 2 for Melee, 2 for Ranged, 1 for Caster: 8 total) but I leveled all of them to 80 in Shadowbringers and learned their rotations. so I made sure all my hotbars, across the 14 classes or whatever it was, had some form of basic structure to allow me to not have to retrain my brain every class. like all my AoE rotations were on set keys, all my defensive/support cooldowns were on set keys, etc.
Last Epoch only having 5 skills instead of 18-20 makes it easier…
