I would like to suggest a slight change to just the wording of how things like mana efficiency etc are displayed. I’m not talking about the actual maths, just the wording.
At the moment they say things like 10%. So without knowing the formula used. On a spell which uses 40 mana, you think okay its going to drop it 4 mana. But it doesn’t, so it can end up confusing people.
My suggest is to reword them so it shows the actual mana/health or whatever its for, actual drop per point. So if an efficiency is going to drop a spell 3 mana it should say that, rather than say 20%.
This will make it a lot easier for new players to understand, without altering any of the maths involved!
For now, i’m with you about the wording. Some of them sound confusing in the beginning especially when you are coming from different arpg’s. I got used to it now, but i understand your point about new players. I think it will be alot easier for everyone (also adaptive spell dmg / %increased, etc.) once they bring out a good dps tooltip and better character sheet. I don’t blame them, it’s still beta and they tried out something different with new wording, i also like that they didn’t copy everything from other arpgs. It just needs some time until they figure out, what looks better for them and what do we prefer more.
Mana efficiency on gear (ie, amulets) in general. I think changing the wording for the skill nodes that provide mana cost reduction is a good idea to confuse people less, but I’m not sure that it would make much sense for gear affixes.
Of course, if we had a comprehensive skill data tab, this could all be folded in…
I just checked some affixes on dammitts LE tools database. Mana Efficiency Mana Efficiency With Void Spells Spell Damage and Mana Cost Throwing Attack Damage and Mana Cost
I mean in general i like different mechanics for one theme. Of course we all know the example with ‘‘spell dmg and mana cost’’ from PoE, it’s a flat number that we can easily calculate and imagine. Something like ‘‘mana efficience with void spells’’ sounds weird first, but makes sense after a while once you understand it. Question is, would you leave the wording like this or just simply call it ‘‘void spell damage and mana cost’’? But once you change that, a % number becomes a flat number. I think a good skill and character tooltip would solve all the problems without changing to many words.
I like the idea of having both % & flat cost reductions, I just know that the % causes some players to be confused when it’s not doing what they think it should (ie, a 10% mana efficiency is not a 10% reduction).
Me too, especially later when you combine them with bigger numbers they both get powerful because % and flat always synergize perfectly together. Do you think a good tooltip alone would solve this ‘‘problem’’ without changing the wording?
