I just bought the game via Steam and wanted to link my Account, as it is stated it needs a third-party account. But there is no special window or login screen, I could just create a new character… I just want to link my account so I can use the standalone launcher…

I am also facing the same issue as OP.
The support page states that those who buy Last Epoch through Steam will be prompted to register a Last Epoch account within the game when launching for the first time via Steam, but I did not receive such a prompt.
if anyone knows how to link a Steam purchase to Last Epoch account either through the Steam game client or otherwise, would be really helpful
Not sure if this is related to the login issues they they have had over the last few days… The Chat system was temporarily disabled in the latest patch 0.81E - it could be that something inadvertently messed up the steam linking…
I would suggest that you use the contact option on https://support.lastepoch.com/
(top right button) - to get hold of them directly about this.
I am very sorry for the inconvenience, however account linking is currently disabled.
This will be resolved early in the week with the release of Patch 0.8.1.f.
