First off, relatively new here. I’ve only leveled a few characters to 75+, have done some endgame farming, and explored a small portion of viable builds from what I can tell. Nonetheless, I think having some feedback from a nascent perspective would be useful even if it evolves after a few hundred hours of gameplay.
I’m specifically surprised there isn’t a Spellblade build path that enables the use of a 2H staff in addition to a 1H melee weapon as that was my first impression of a battlemage type class. I think there’s already a bit of weapon homogenization between the three classes I’ve played and I believe there’s space for some thematic flavor and perhaps a subtle shift in playstyle. I understand that it would require some effort to scale (balance) the mods granted by a staff (50% effectiveness or some sort); however, I believe the value in, at first glance, a subtle change could yield dividends in playstyle and feel.
I was going to hold off feedback on mage specs specifically until the Runemaster mastery was released, but I think it’s already notable that Spellblade lacks the hybrid damage passive path that Sorcerer has available. I would have thought that there would be a specialization path that would buff all elemental damage or some such and a skill that would deal damage of all three elements - especially given the base skills of nova/disintegrate.
Further, I do think that, since the concept of Spellblade is to be a hybrid, it would fit well within Spellblade to add something like: “Spell Strike” - deal an equal amount of fire/lightning/cold damage with a single target strike that chains an all element beam to surrounding enemies. If no other enemies are around, deals X more damage to the single target. It would work as the signature skill while the skills unlocked via the tree are damage type specific. Especially since the mastery already unlocks two fire melee attacks.
Overall I like the playstyle of ward and mana management while utilizing cooldowns (spells) but I feel like there should be a readily castable nuke for Spellblade that breaks up the rotation a bit. Could also be a hybrid damage type nuke. I think given the blurb of what the Spellblade is supposed to be, it would fit very well to have a big spell to cast rarely in addition to the normal melee feel.
Thank you for taking the time to read my suggestion. Enjoying the game a great deal so far and looking forward to the future!
