Soufire Bastion - Dungeon Shield - First Room

What went wrong?
I cannot switch the shield in the first room until the very end. I have to make it across the “fire floor” without switching the shield to fire

I have experieced this in T3/4 multiple times.

I figured out that I have to press and hold “D” but only in that starting area.
