the periodic ring of fire in the center of the solarum arena that appears in some monoliths is bugged and will bypass all defenses, including resists/ward. Since HP regen is generally a flat value, and the fire pit appears to be an unfinished placeholder scripted %HP damage that does not include any normal damage calculations, this means increasing your max HP actually makes it kill you faster, and if you have potions converted into ward, then it will just ignore those too.
I play on hardcore, so I find any mechanic that ignores all of the RPG elements and tries to hit me with scripted_instakill.exe to undermine the integrity of the entire game. Take no inspiration from PoE labyrinth traps, because 1: they’re BS, and 2: you can have a ton of %hp regen in that game to pretend the problem doesn’t exist.
What I suspect is happening here:
- entire damage calculation was coded as entity-vs-entity
- fire pit and presumably other ‘traps’ were added later
- ‘traps’ have no entity with any stats to pull from
- someone got lazy and said “-25%/sec lawl”
- everyone forgot about the placeholder
- later it’s assumed to be “intentional”
- oooo trap scary, gaem mechanik
I refuse to believe any game by gamers would roll towards an endgame that tableflips all of its own defense mechanics and hits you with scripted damage/instakill nonsense, so I’m just going to say that the solarum arena and anything else like it is bugged and needs to be fixed. I can’t even trust the game enough to explore dungeons or the endgame bosses now without first scouring around for information to tell me if they’re going to completely ignore the RPG elements of the RPG. Also, just to be clear, I didn’t die to the fire pit nor will I probably ever die to it, but just knowing that problem exists undermines everything else in the game to me, which is why I think it’s a major problem on its own. I raged much less about actual character deaths, or not at all, and then I tested that stupid fire pit with like 3k ward up and watched it almost murder me and I am so pissed off about it that I tracked down the forum for the sole purpose of saying that thing is total BS.
edit: sure enough, there are bosses like emperor of corpses that also use placeholder damage ground effects that ignore defenses.
AAAAHHHH
