Smoke Bomb with the Umbral Assault node (1 point) does not create any shadows. I tested this several times by casting Smoke Bomb and spaming shadow cascade (in case I just can’t see the shadows for some other reason) - no shadows appear at all and I also don’t get any extra casts of shadow cascade.

Having only 1 point in Umbral Assault will give you a 25% chance for a shadow per second, so it’s entirely possible that you’ll not get any, given the skill has a base duration of 4s.
Yes, that is why I tested this several times (at least 10) and not a single shadow spawned.
I’ve tested it & I even got 4 shadows once or twice.
Edit: Though it does look as though it’s coded to roll when you use the skill & if you “succeed” then you get shadows every second, but if you “fail” then you don’t get any. I’d have expected to get 1 shadow most times I used the skill. Rather than none or 4. So I think it might be bugged, just not in the way you initially suggested…
Ah, yes that might be it. The way the skill is worded it seems that every second there is a chance to spawn a shadow. But its only on skill use there is a chance to get 1 shadow each second.
Just in case I will try it again as well to confirm (need to wait for the skill to level)

Edit: Now I got one where 4 shadows spawned. So, I was just incredibly unlucky with my first tests.
